from what I have read on the forum - you give post dated checks as your up front rent for the period specified - not sure if this is still correct - but will find out soon as we are due to fly out to Doha on May 18th
we heard stories of 1 years rent in advance as the deposit, but can be negoiated to 2 or 3 payments. this is being confirmed by a few people there as well, as one of the arab lawyers in my wifes firm who has offered to speak to the landlord on our behalf to reduce this. I do wonder if it is a trust element, with the number of non qatari coming into the country, but i maybe wrong.

we came to doha in 2004 for the 1st 3 yrs we rented a villa and yes we had to give upfront post dated cheques for the rental.payments..........

In indonesia, you wont get a landlord to rent u anything if u dont pay for at least 12 months rental up front. Go figure folks

@supernurse, 1 month deposit and 1 months rent is standard practice in most countries in the world.
