Dear Friends,

My Husband's employer is insisting to submit my passport (wife's) and my husband's passport to keep in the company. I would like to know the disadvantages of holding the passports with employer. The terms between my husband and his employer are not good right now.

Thanking you

i agree, it is a common practice here.

whether the employer holds the passports or not, the employees still need permission from the employer to go out of the country... so what's the point of keeping it with them. better ask your husband's company if they will take full responsibility in case of loss or damage before you surrender your passports.

Company has not right to hold employee and his family passports ... you may approach Ministry of Interior or Ministry of Labour office in Doha ...

It is not legal, but unfortunately it is a common practice. However I read sometime ago in the Gulf Times that the government/human rights is against this practice. I dont really remember the article. However I were you I wouldnt give it. Remember the passport is property of your country. This is clearly written in your passport. Aisha-Taweela
