I have a book from the 1960's, I imagine it was a tourism book, the type you find in foreign embassies. It has photos of Doha, not a mall in sight and a page dedicated to the newly built Gulf Hotel. I will try to scan some of the pics.
Yes, you need to click 'disable rich text' first, then you'll see a green plus sign. Click this and a new window will open. You wont have any pictures to select yet, so click upload and upload your picture. Then once it's uploaded you can select it to add to your comment. Best to choose the 'preview' size to display so it doesn't cover the whole webpage!
TALLG Thanks! I just copied and pasted the image and expected it to work as it supports rich text. I do not see any "add image" button in the post reply area. Am I missing something.
I found another shot of the Corniche I took back in 2006, so I've combined it with Surfer_Boy's 2004 photo (hope you don't mind SB) and my 2008 photo from above;
The First time we moved here, we were staying in Sheraton for a month and i remember i can still see City Center from our room and one of the highest building in that area, now it looks really tiny compared to the buliding's around it....

Everybody is right Everybody is wrong, it depend where we stand.
The 1947 picture is the same area as the more recent pictures.
I believe it's the souq area.
Obviously this doesn't change the fact that there has been a huge change since then!

Obviously they've all been taken from slightly different angles, but it gives a good idea of how many buildings have sprung up in 4 years.
nice pics reminds me of the year when i was new in qatar
A life unexamined is not worth living
dig some out when the Sheraton was the main feature and the tallest bulding was the QP Office block!
Here's another one I took on Friday;

NICE!
This picture (unknown source) is a more recent aerial shot of the city center area;
Which is a bit similar to the 3rd picture; citi_center.jpg
"Sea side view."....is what most of the buildings comming up in West Bay
going to be advertised as. But most of the buildings will endup being
surrounded by other tall building on all 4 sides, and all they will get is a view of
a block of concrete outside their office window!!!
Other thing is that the buildings which were planned to have natural sunlight
as lighting is going to fail miserably as when they are surrounded by tall
buildings there will be darkness even in noon time unless the lights are
switched on.
The beauty of the buildings are gone as one overlaps ther other. They
should have given proper spacing between two towers.
Anyone got any really old photos before any hi rise went up?
I took this last Friday;
