Halal and kosher meat should not be slipped in to food chain, says minister

By Martin Hickman, Consumer Affairs Correspondent
Monday, 7 April 2008 (The iNDEPENDENT)

Halal and kosher meat should be labelled when it is put on sale so the public can decide whether they want to buy food from animals that have bled to death, the Food and Farming minister says.

Lord Rooker said all meat from animals killed by slitting their throats should be marked, allowing customers to decide whether the suffering troubled their consciences. "I object to the method of slaughter," he said.

"My choice as a customer is that I would want to buy meat that has been looked after and slaughtered in the most humane way possible."

The poor animal is gonna die either way

There is no humane way

So the slitting of the throat is more hygienic and doesnt let the muscles absorb the blood as much, who cares!!

I am sure the animal doesnt care for either of the ways

What we shud all do is not try to waste food, and also keep a sock in all the stupid politicans mouths - they can only create mischief with their wisely ways!

Looks like we've got opposed journal articles, because the posts below disagree with the references above.  The bold and italics is mine.  The German study is dated now, the studies below are much more up-to-date. Anyone have any tie breaking information?

Cortical function in cattle during slaughter: conventional captive

bolt stunning followed by exsanguination compared with shechita

slaughter.

Daly CC, Kallweit E, Ellendorf F.

Institute of Food Research, Bristol Laboratory, Langford.

Brain function was examined in adult cattle after conventional

captive bolt stunning or shechita slaughter, using eight animals in

each treatment. The times to loss of evoked responses (visual and

somatosensory) and spontaneous activity in the electro-corticogram were

used to determine the onset of brain failure. Captive bolt stunning

followed by sticking one minute later resulted in immediate and

irreversible loss of evoked responses after the stun. Spontaneous

cortical activity was lost before sticking in three animals, and in an

average of 10 seconds after sticking in the remaining five animals. The

duration of brain function after shechita was very variable, and

particularly contrasted with captive bolt stunning with respect to the

effects on evoked responses. These were lost between 20 and 126 seconds

(means of 77 seconds for somatosensory and 55 seconds for visual evoked

responses) and spontaneous activity was lost between 19 and 113 seconds

(mean 75 seconds) after slaughter.

Penetrating Captive Bolt Stunning and Exsanguination of Cattle in Abattoirs

Neville Gregory‌

South Australian Research and Development Institute, Flaxley, South Australia, Australia

Frank Shaw‌

Food Science Australia, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Abattoirs

commonly use penetrating captive bolt pistols to stun cattle. Humane

slaughter requires that an animal immediately becomes unconscious and

does not regain consciousness. In this review we consider the concepts

of concussion, unconsciousness, and return to consciousness. We

conclude that an animal effectively stunned with a penetrating captive

bolt pistol, as indicated by the presence of certain signs and the

absence of others, has little possibility of brain function returning.

Appropriate monitoring at all stages between stunning and sticking

would ensure immediate detection and restunning on those few occasions

when brain function was returning. When a captive bolt irreversibly

stuns animals, sticking has no role in terms of animal welfare; its

only function is to relieve the carcass of blood. With effective

initial stunning and subsequent monitoring, specifying a stun-to-stick

interval appears unnecessary. Abattoir surveys have indicated that it

is possible to approximate, or even actually obtain, 100% successful

stunning from a single shot. Furthermore, low prevalence of recovery

follows. Thus, penetrating captive bolt stunning can form part of a

process for the humane slaughter of cattle. This article outlines an

approach to implementing standard operating procedures for checking the

effectiveness of captive bolt stunning.

More humane way? What?  I'm sorry, but are are you trying to say that slitting the throat of an animal is more humane than a bolt gun in the brain?  If I could choose my method of going, I would take a bolt gun over halal or kosher methods any day of the week and twice on weekends.

At the end of the day, they will still die, wether in pain or not..That was the point i was trying to say......And yer right, i dont care. Humans were born to eat meat, if you choose to be a  veggie, then that is your choice and yours only.

Mr Paul Now that you understand how slitting is better than the bolt on head for animals, Enjoy your bacon. Strange, you ask for it and when proved don't care.Novita77: whom are your comments directed to.

Halal SlaughterHalal slaughter is “the humane method” providing hygienic meat to the consumer. Al Shaddad Bin Aous has quoted this tradition of the Holy Prophet (Pbuh) “God calls for mercy in everything, so be merciful when you kill and when you slaughter, sharpen your blade to relieve it’s pain”.Many allegations have been made that Islamic slaughter is not humane to animals. However, Professor Schultz and his colleague Dr. Hazim of the Hanover University, Germany, proved through an experiment, using an Electro encephalograph (EEG) and Electro Cardiogram (ECG) that *Islamic slaughter is The humane method of slaughter and captive bolt stunning practiced by the western method, causes severe pain to the animal. The results surprised many. Experimental Details:1. Several electrodes were surgically implanted at various points of the skull of all animals, touching the surface of the brain. 2. The animals were allowed to recover for several weeks. 3. Some animals were slaughtered by making a swift, deep incision with a sharp knife on the neck cutting the jugular veins and carotid arteries of both sides; as also the trachea and oesophagus-Halal Method. 4. Some animals were stunned using a captive bolt pistol - humane slaughter by the western method. 5. During the experiment, EEG and ECG were recorded on all animals to record the condition of the brain and heart during the course of slaughter and stunning Results and Discussion: I. Halal Method1. The first three seconds from the time of Islamic slaughter as recorded on the EEG did not show any change from the graph before slaughter , thus indicating that the animal did not feel any pain during or immediately after the incision. 2. For the following 3 seconds, the EEG recorded a condition of deep sleep - unconsciousness. This is due to a large quantity of blood gushing out from the body. 3. After the above mentioned 6 seconds, the EEG recorded zero level, showing no feeling of pain at all. 4. As the brain message ( EEG ) dropped to zero level, the heart was still pounding and the body convulsing vigorously (a reflex action of the spinal cord) driving maximum blood from the body: resulting in hygienic meat for the consumer. II. Western method by C.B.P. Stunning1. The animals were apparently unconscious soon after stunning. 2. EEG showed severe pain immediately after stunning. 3. The hearts of the animal stunned by C.B.P. stopped beating earlier as compared to those of the animals slaughtered according to the Halal method resulting in the retention of more blood in the meat. This in turn is unhygienic for the consumer. Ashraf Dabayeh(Dept. of Civil Eng. University of Waterloo)http://www.muslims.netfirms.com/pages/articles/halal_slaughter.htm

Kosher forbids the intake of  cetain kind of food with ther other eg:meat and milk. Now Something similar to Kosher is there in Hindu tradition where Milk & buttermilk are forbidden to be taken within short interval.

Halal I guess refers to cleanliness of the food. eg drinking blood is not halal. or eating contaminated, or raw meat, etc

But nobody drinks blood of a chicken ...usually the blood is drained ....

..irrespective of the way you kill the chicken!!!

In Canada it's just sold in a seperate freezer that says Kosher/Halal.  But it really isn't the most humane way to do it....then again if you care about how animals are killed your should become a vegetarian.

humane according to whom? animals or humans who eat those animals. i think people just talk and talk, but never want to accept the idea/fact that afterall the Jewhish Kosher way and the Muslim Halal way of slaughtering animals are the best and the most humane way.

i wish English had a word for humane from the perspective of animals. maybe we should teach them  English to understand them better!!!

I think we should take a few politicians and test what is a humane way of dying, slitting their throats, shooting them, bashing them between the eyes or maybe dying in a foreign country for their worthless butts.

Everything in the UK is labeled...Stops an awful lot of  lawsuits.

And most Muslims go to their local butchers, who practise  the Halal method, so there is no problem.

This is just another MP putting his worthless opinion into a situation that is not there !!

He cud have passed the motion without actually putting his own views in this matter.

I mean he holds office and i guess when u do that ur personal views take a backseat.

Jews and muslims form a considerable portion of the UK.

If u want greater transperancy there are nicer ways of putting it.
