Why?????

Aisha-Taweela
By Aisha-Taweela

I do not want to start a culture bashing, nor imply any wrong. But .....

Further to the various comments about being badly served in various shops I would like to know the root/reason for my question.

Why are Phillipino ladies so tough and their men so soft and sweet?

Please Phillipino ladies and men, can you explain the reason for this?

it's sad to know filipinas (noted in general) to be rude by smartlegend. Maybe smartlegend encountered some rudeness to filipina because he's rude in person like the way his posts are.

The most arrogant people I met are the Lebanese. All people from the Philippines I've met are sweet and gentle, including the girls! Or should I say, especially the girls.

there areloads of ignorant rude sales assistants all over the world.

We seem to accept it in our tiny corner of the world but when some people become an ex-pat they see themselves as something better.

I have had rude service from Indians,Philipinos, Eyptians, Lebanese, etc etc. At one point though they must have been treated like cr*p from the all of us.

I have a measure of thumb that I use here in Qatar and England.

I treat the sales assistant with respect, I am friendly, I hope to buy from them as I am hoping they may get commission. However, as soon as they are rude, I ask them what their problem is, if they continue to be rude, I show no respect at all.

My thoughts are my own, but I doubt my Mum would agree with some of them.

being casual doesn't mean being rude or whatsoever. i think many filipinas here are being misunderstood.

I can honestly say i have not yet a philipino woman here who hasnt smiled at me or my kids. I find them very warm and very helpful and friendly. Ive yet to meet any other nationality here in Q that smiles at strangers as much as the philipino women...I havent experienced the "tough" bit yet...

ive never met as much Philipinos in my life as i have here, and i gotta say, I love them..god bless them all...

Hi Aisha,

if thats the case, then  i have to stick to the reason i said on my earlier reply :)

there is also another angle wherein the tough girls you met are either conceited or are just too much stressed with problems at work, issues outside work, and problems back with their families in the Philippines.

but again thats just me and my two cents

but I used to waitress and I know what its like to rely on the tips.  I always hope that I will go back there and they will show me a bit more courtesy the next time, knowing I tipped well the first time round.... time will tell.

I do remember that waiters face and he won't get a cent from me since he was so ungrateful the last time....

This is true of people who work in Designer shops. Or branded Shops.

The stuff sold there is usually 500% more costly than the ones available in

the regular shops. So the sales guys think if an Asian approaches to buy the goods most probably he is not aware of the price tag and he cannot afford it.

When I came to Doha I wanted to learn to rollerblade (which is different from roller skate) so I went to the Adidas shop, City Centre to buy the roller blade.

I saw the price it was QR800 I knew it was unreasonable price but I was so desperate to learn it. So I said to the INDIAN guy ok take it out of the glass I want to try it on but he says its a display piece and cannot be taken off.  There was a Srilankan sales girl who said there are more pieces but he would not listen. So I said Good you keep it.

After 2 shops I saw another shop selling similar Rollerblade for QR 250. I bought it.

Now many of these Designer (expensive) shops   have Filipino staff especially girls  so you might feel that its the Filipino girls are "Vain and Pompous".  But if you put any nationality people in their shoes they would behave the same way.

Of course its mainly because the Owner himself has such attitude that percolates down to his employees. There are a few times that I have received good attention from the sales staff:

1. Filipino Girl at the Mobile counter at Al Asmak Mall from where I bought my N95. She was so sweet ...I was itching to flirt with her.

2. Filipino Girl at a Designer store  kept showing me dresses after dresses

She too was very good. I cant remember the store. But its at Citycentre.

3. There is a Srilankan Refrigerator Sales man I met on this Thursday at LuluCentre who too was very good. I was looking the Double Door Refrigerators QR4000 to Qr 7000. And he was telling me the technology behind it & how food remains fresh ....different advantages of different ones etc....all without any pressure "to buy".  I decided then If my current

Refrigerator konks off I will get a Double door one.

But these are very very very rare instances of good salesmanship in Doha especially in Expensive Goods.

I guess usually in all big shops in Doha the attitude is directly proportinate to the price. Higher the Price higher their attitued.

Aisha......casanova.....I guess you will agree the attitued of the Cashier Filipino girls at Carryfour CityCentre or any of the malls are not Arrogant. Maybe the sales person selling certain expensive goods was arrogant.

in Doha is shocking.

I am a big tipper.  Wherever I go, I make sure that I tip someone that has given me wonderful service and I always tip 10%

However, the other evening I joined some friends at A'saha restuarant and when we left, I left 20QR, even though our bill was only about QR 150, as we had just had some drinks and sheesha.  The service had been particularly bad but I still left a tip.

My friends that understand arabic overheard the waiter complaining that we had only left 20QR.  I was shocked by this, as I felt he didn't even deserve that much as he had ignored us most of the evening and even got our order wrong.

It just seem to be the norm here.

My question stems from their behaviour. The ladies are always tough, to the border of rude, very target minded

The men are overly conciderate, sweet, caring and helpful.

I am not questioning this because of a certain service that I received in a shop. No it is after years of having received this treatment, seen the body language observation.

Or is it phillipinos from a certain part of the country that are like that?

Hi aisha, when you say tough, tough in what way? and when you say sweet, sweet in what way? pls spill out an example or the instance itself.

if sweet in terms of the way they caress or treat a woman, thats pretty normal. being gentle to female has been part of the filipino culture.

but im curious about the "tough" part you mentioned..... perhaps insecurity?... hehehehe

Dont know about you Aisha but i'm an Indian and have a worst experiance of my life to share with you...

when i was new to this country, i happen to go to Villiggio with two of my Indian friends, a promotion was going on there for Hummer H3, since i didnt have a car and wanted to buy one and was looking at options so I asked the gal whether I could know if there is a deal for me and she replied "sorry, its an expensive car"... lolzzz.. i was shocked .. I smiled and made my way but one of my angry friends jumped in between and took his cars key out of his pocket... and said .... Look.. i have a new BMW if you wish i can take you to a ride for free... he was damn angry but i pulled him away but i learnt from that incident that no matter what you do, whats your qualification and which class you belongs, If you are an Indian and working in the middle east, you will only be treated as an indian (keralite) working in a grocery shop...

The store I am referring to has sadly been closed for 4 months now.  I'm sorry, I just don't find the supermarket staff that bad. Considering their pay and conditions and pay, I think they do a good job.  Just going off the point a bit, last year I saw this huge car parked outside Hyatt Plaza being loaded with about 4 trolleys full of shopping. There was a Qatari lady in the back and after the Giant Stores guys had finished loading she opened the window and shouted at them to come back. The way she sounded I really thought she was going to tell them off, instead she gave them 100QR note each! I bet that made their day!

I work with a Phillipina girl and she is one of the best people I know in Doha.  Thinking about it, I agree with Mallrat, shyness, I think, plays a part.

Jasmine, are you for real? This place has the worst customer service I've ever had! C'mon, you go to the supermarket (being Lulu, Carrefour, you name it) and you ask for something, people don't even bother taking you to the aisle where the item is supposed to be, they just point at a random direction. That's if you're lucky that they've understood you. Most of the times they'll either send you to the wrong place in the supermarket or simply say they don't have it. They just wait for you to finish the sentence to say no, without even understanding what you've asked for.

I really don't call this good customer service.

for all who thought its a mistake, no. pelase understand that aisha is talking about their behaviours..

but i shud say filipina ladies take more responsibility of their family than man. i think its the same way in some parts in the far east. am i rite?

I think the customer service is generally good here, except Sephora in Villagio, not sure what nationality the staff are but they are unwilling to sell anything to me everytime I go.

Anyway, I know what you mean about Phillipino men, they are generally so kind. I am thinking in particular about the Karwa bus drivers. They always make sure i have a seat and are generally protective.

I don't want to generalise about the ladies, I have had both good and bad experiences. The best staff in the country were in MegaMart Landmark and they were mainly Phillipino ladies.  I think you are right about the ladies having much stronger characters though. Maybe it's because life is hard in the Phillipines. I have had life so easy, I can't begin to imagine.

No not a typing error. My question is genuine. All the phillipino ladies you meet in the shops are tough and all the men you meet are sweet & soft. WHY????

Normally it would be the other way around but somehow with most of the Phillipinos is seems to be that way. I just want to know why this is? Is it the water, their cultural upbringing? What? I would like to understand.
