yes very true gadarene..Evenif some people who gets settled abroad like in CANADA,UK,AUSTRAILIA, they can never be accepted in their society..Racial/colour discrimination will always be there..its a bitter truth and one has to accept this..I won't take citizenship of ne country no matter how develop that country will be..i would love to be associated with my own SOIL till my last breath..

@ diamond, you may or may not choose to accept it,but it remains a fact, one that i have been told in person by good friends who are "real Qatari","sons of the soil" so to speak, not Irani-Qatari,not naturalized Qatari but 100% Qatari by blood,of course they will never say it to their face but they will also NEVER be invited to their majlis, catch my drift mate?...

By diamond• 24 Feb 2010 08:40

'...may have the passport but they will NEVER be accepted by Qatari society as one of their own,so really, those people don't belong anywhere, they've given up the passport of their country of origin or never had one(as is the case with Palestinians) & have a Qatari passport but aren't accepted or allowed to integrate into Qatari society...'

That's just not true.

By anonymous• 22 Feb 2010 08:08
anonymous

surprsingly,no one seems to have mentioned the flip side to this...having a Qatari passport in Qatar is all well & good but in today's climate of general mistrust & suspicion with which ALL nationals of GCC states are viewed with by immigration authorities in Europe & N.America thanks to a certain Mr. Bin Laden's heroics,it doesn't seem too appealing,to be singled everytime i travel for "random" checking...no thanks,i'm happier with my own passport,my country may offer nothing to it's citizens compared to Qatar but i know for a fact that in the real world,my passport is definitely more respected & won't bring up any red flags with immigration authorities like a Qatari(or any GCC) passport would...

One other VERY important factor is one of acceptance, again UNLIKE elsewhere in the world, having a Qatari passport alone will do nothing to endear or integrate one into society here because @ the end of the day,one is either Qatari by blood or not, plain & simple,in this closely-knit tribal society like with similar societies all over the world, one is either born into the society, i.e of the same blood or one is an outsider,a passport will do nothing to change that fact...so really the benefit is only in the welfare but because the welfare is so generous,it may be enough for a lot of people but as the saying goes, nothing comes for free, those people(naturalized Qataris) may have the passport but they will NEVER be accepted by Qatari society as one of their own,so really, those people don't belong anywhere, they've given up the passport of their country of origin or never had one(as is the case with Palestinians) & have a Qatari passport but aren't accepted or allowed to integrate into Qatari society, not a very nice situation to be in IMHO but then to each his/her own...

Yes, RR, now I think of it, many Gulf Arabs have also applied for nationality...Saudis, Bahrainis, Omanis in particular as they do have career and financial problems in their countries. Also many Khaleejias (female Gulf citizens) would love to marry Qataris for reason of a higher standard of living and an unbeatable welfare state.

Even I would have been tempted had I not being one of the lucky ones who immigrated to Canada.

Especially among the Arab Nationalities, Qatari citizenship is one of the best to have (if not THE best)!

Stay safe all.

Perfection does not exist. The question therefore, is: what level of imperfection are we willing to settle for?

I can see why some people like the Palestinians living here or any where else might want a Qatari nationality, most who are living in the ME only have travel documents wherever they live, apart from the ones who live in western countries who are given citizenship....

By tallg• 13 May 2008 08:43

DG is right, as usual. And there's nothing wrong with saying that RR, your just stating the truth. I'm sure many people would happily admit that Qataris get a better deal than they do in their country, and I'm sure many would jump at the chance of getting Qatari Nationality. Heck, I'd be tempted!

By diamond• 13 May 2008 08:40
diamond

RR, culture is another factor. Many who apply for Qatari nationality are Arabic speaking and live a life typical of this part of the world and feel they would fit in here. Especially non-Gulf Arabs. These are one of the highest groups who wish to onbtain Qatari nationality due to the problems and poverty in their own countries.

Especially if their current or original nationality didn't provide the benefits that Qatari Citizenship gives its citizens.

I hate how this is going to sound elitist, but it all depends on if its an upgrade or downgrade from your initial nationality....I know its not politically correct, and I don't mean to offend ANY nationality, but the truth is that not ALL citizenships are equal (hence SOME nationalities are in HIGH demans, while others are not).

Stay safe all.

Perfection does not exist. The question therefore, is: what level of imperfection are we willing to settle for?

Mr. Paul, possibly for some of the reasons you have decided to live in the Gulf. The government is inundated with people applying for nationality. Qatar offers free education to tertiary level and beyond, free healthcare in and outside Qatar, good salaries, good career opportunities, no taxes, a great pension. It is one of the best welfare states in the world. Qatar is one of the richest countries in the world and looks afer it's people well.

DG - I think I read something about these 'Bidoon' people. If I remember correctly, they are trying hard to convince the government to recognise them as true Qataris and grant them a passport. Is that right?

By diamond• 13 May 2008 07:39
diamond

That is correct. I don't know much more about their situation. I think they entered illegally initially. Qatar is happy for them to stay. They attend local schools etc and have healthcare available to them. But Qatar wants them to obtain a paassport from where they originally came from.

In other countries they would be classed as illegal immigrants and probably deported (thinking US, UK, etc)

Morning Nov, gosh, that's a bit of a puzzler. In Qatar the children must take the natinality of their Father if he is married to a Qataria. so if he is British then I think the British Embassy will have to produce some kind of documentation for the child. To be honest, I don't know.

There is a small category of people in Qatar called 'Bidoon' (Without). These are people without passports coming from the time when borders were fluid and people travelled easily through the region. Some settled here. They didn't have passports in the first place and were not Qatari so do not have Qatari passports. They are stateless. Any subsequent generations are also in the same category.

For Canadians, a baby born to a Canadian gets citizenship wherever it is born. dd was born in Korea and she now has dual-citizenship.

Is the UK different from Canada? Canada does do bizarre things so maybe they are mistaken.

Yes, the father will have a British passport because his Father is British even when born outside UK, like my son.

But because my son born outside the UK, British rules say that any of his kids, if born outside UK, cannot have British passport.

So if he marry Qataria and kids born in Qatar ............. what will there nationality be?

"diamondgirl said Nov, I'll answer your ...

Nov, I'll answer your question. If Qatari marries a non-Qatari, then she can apply for nationality. If a Qatari woman (Qataria) marries a non-Qatari then he will not usually be granted nationality. The children of this union will not be Qatari. They must assume their Father's nationality. This is a source of much discontent amongst Qatarias and many are speaking up about this issue. Inshallah their situation will change favorably. It is being looked into currently by the government and the Human rights committee."

----> DG ... in this case let's say a Qatari woman marry to someone from the UK (British) that not born in the UK, this means the father can not pass down the nationality to the baby, and the mother cant do the same either. Poor baby will be citizenship-less (is there such a word?).

Yes, it is seen as unfair by the women for various reasons. One example is schooling. In the new independent school system place priority goes to Qatari children. Often children of Qatari Mothers and non-Qatari Fathers cannot get a place in these schools as their children are not Qatari and end up keeping their children in the old government schools.

In this case the Qatarias want the same rights for their children as the Qatari men have. I think they'll get it :)
