Employers every where monitor e-mail of employees, how do you feel about your employer monitoring your privae e-mails and what would you do in this case?
I do experience this kind of ruling in two companies in my career in my country which both are multinational companies (electronics and semiconductor),before you were given a contract to be signed, the HR relations manager will be givng you a sort of handbook sort of manual, written all your rights and their rights, if you agree and off course no questions asks (if have, they will explain) / then it's time to sign this contract.
Company email accounts are company property, even in cases you do not agree, w/ or without the notice given to you, they can access your mails, some are just being polite to asks and informed you first and that is good because it means the company respect your rights.
If you are using company equipment on company time - then so be it. It is what it is. Most places I have worked have a policy that clearly states the rules, requirements, rights and obligations of both the employee and the employer when it comes to computer use. The policy states that internet activity may be monitored. That pretty much says it all to me.
But any email from anywhere can be monitored and can come back and bite you in the behind at any given time. Same is true for text messaging. So don't put anything incriminating in writing if you are worried about it. As for me - I say go ahead and take a look - I'm just about one of the most boring people on the planet. If you have nothing better to do than check up on me - then the snooping business must be pretty darn slow. :D
to be safe refrain from opening personal emails. i think its not right thay they snoop personal emails but the fact that your are using company server, they have the right to do so. but if your usage is not so alarming i guess you can be spared...

Sme companies are monitering emails....even sme had loaded with remote desktop software to moniter the employee activities.... but all deponds on the company IT policy...
for your private mails, creating a tunnel on Microsoft Exchange Server [if you are using Outlook, then you are one of those] and all of your mails can be viewed.
The other mail servers are not an exception ... So if it is work related, no issues ... If it is something else ... sorry but your mail is under the network administrator surveillance :)
I'm not of that type as I'm concerned only with the implementation, the rest goes to the IT guy handling it in that company.

for me, its alright to monitor emails as long as it is company's. i dont use our corporate email for personal use. i have my own yahoo account for my private/personal mails.
official ID is monitored everywhere and screened... employees must be responsible enough to render their 8 hours for work...cuz all of us are paid for it.
then again, once in while making personal e-mails can be justified. :-)
you're wrong... business is business... working time is work duty... comapny emails are intended for business use... if u want privacy... make a private contact for your personal use... you do have that privacy to do beyond the hours left on you...
While employees may be using company e-mail, I still feel employers should respect employee privacy and allow employees to use company e-mail for personal communication to a certain extent as long as this does not interefere with work or affect the employers interests ..

The mail a/c provided by your employer is strictly for work related purposes.
If one needs to send personal emails or fwd mails, do it @ home using your personal mail a/c.

employers should warn employees in advance that they are monitoring their e-mail and telephone calls?

double edged sword here.....
the employee can find out whether or not an employee is working by checking his personal emails !!!
i mean there are other ways ...but email and internet access top teh list
