younger couples in qatar

Hey everyone,

So I tried searching the forums (to no avail) before posting this, so if you have an idea, please let me know.

I'm moving to Doha (into the Education City staff housing)in the beginning of July and my wife will come over in early October. We're both from Chicago, both in our 20's (I'm 26, she's 24), both professionals.

I know that the night life in Doha isn't exactly jumping, but we aren't really into clubs/major-drinking anyways. Mostly we just like grilling out, talking, having a few drinks and getting to know others. We also like to eat out at decent restaurants with others and go on road trips or explore local sights.

So our questions all revolve around our social lives: Will we be able to make friends around the same age as us? Does anyone know the age demographics for the area? Are there lots of other younger couples working around Doha? Is Doha going to be a social desert for people our age or are there a good number there?

In a few words-- can someone please let me know what our social life in Doha might look like?

Thanks for any and all thoughtful responses,

Dan

I'm a 26 year old American here. My husband and I don't have kids. We actually don't do nearly as much of the bar scene as we did in the states, mostly because the clubs here are lame and really expensive. We spend most weekends at Bbqs and house parties. In the winters we often move the party to a campsite in the desert.

We'll be over for a pre-employment visit next week-- and I'll start in July-- I'll look you up when I get in (second week) and we can get together. Melissa will come over in October, so we might have to wait to do the couples thing for a little bit.

But thanks for the reply!

Dan, don't worry about it. u will find a lot of friends, and also young couples if that's what u r looking for, in here. if u r into the pool'n'bbq parties rather than clubbing, u will find that, too.

we actually hang out in couple-singles mix in here more often. and even clubbing ain't gonna be that wild as in the states or EU, so don't worry ;o)

it's a perfect place for u guys!

If you're looking for a problem, you're probably gonna find one.

I would recommend that you enjoy life where you are.. You might come here with expectations based on our say so and then regret it. The fact of the matter is that Qatar , whilst opening up, is still a conservative society.

not 20's (21 ~30 is 30's). Anyway, for sure there are a lot of young couples here in Qatar but if you want to enjoy your life more, try to find a companionship with the matured guys (and you can learn a lot more). Also you never mentioned what kind of work are you will be, so it also depends on the circle of "friends" or associates you will be. Anyway, welcome to Qatar and the QL circle.

I'm 27, wifey-dearest is (runs off to check dates) 25, no kids, so I guess we're a borderline 'young' couple :)

I work daft hours (14-15 hours / day including travel) so don't tend to go out to socialise much, but like you guys would love to meet up with similar couples for beers, bbqs, etc. :)

Hey my wife and I are moving to Doha this month. Ive spent the last 8 months working there and have a good idea of whats going on. We would love to find another young couple with no kids to hang with. I have a very demanding job but looking forward to getting settled. Let us know anytime and we would love to BBQ and just chill. The wife wont be working so i thinks its always good for the little women of our lives to find others to confide in. I am Canadian and she is Texan so we both like to Party.

Cheers hope to hear from yall

I hear Doha's population (interms of couples) have increased drastically in the last 3 to 4 years. Indeed the city has seen a major uplift interms of amenities and housing facilities.

A visit to a decent bar would definitely fetch u friends (as most of them are what u r looking for...couples)

Why to wander, QL has some real interesting people too who are very fit to be family friends.

Socializing scene is not bad if u know how to, but just dont expect too much as u r coming in from one of the world's most interesting cities.

Cheers !
