Firefox 3 is released for download

As expected, the latest version of Mozilla's Firefox web browser, Firefox 3, was made available for download on Tuesday.

After nearly three years in development, last Wednesday Mozilla announced that Firefox 3 was ready for release. During Firefox 3's development, memory-usage improvement has been a consistent theme.

Firefox's third release candidate was released on Wednesday last week, and contained a fix for loading issues with Mac OS X. The final release is identical to RC3, said the organisation.

Mozilla is hoping to set a Guinness World Record for the most number of downloads of an application in a day, on the release of the browser.

There is currently no official Guinness World Record for the total number of downloads of an application in a day. During the first 24 hours of Firefox 3's release, Mozilla is aiming for over 1.6 million downloads and hoping for five million.

Mozilla has encouraged its community of over 175 million users to sign up on the spreadfirefox.com marketing site to receive Firefox 3 on Tuesday, to host download parties, and to put Firefox badges on websites and blogs. According to Mozilla, over 60,000 people in the UK have pledged to download Firefox 3 on its release date.

Update: Firefox 3 was made available for download an hour later than expected due to server issues. The release was slated for 6pm BST, but was actually made available at 7pm BST. A combination of migration difficulties and volume of demand caused a server outage for the first hour.

Yeah, it will vary from system to system I guess, and obviously depends on settings, add-ons etc.

The link I included in a comment above has a stopwatch utility that lets you time page loads, if you're geeky enough to run some tests!

@tallg, it may just be an illusion for me, but pages load up in a split second. The browser also loads instantly. Firefox loads up the slowest but IE uses the MOST resources.

@qatar.living - people normally test browser speed by measuring the time it takes each to load a page (repeated several times and averaged). Normally several different pages with different types of content are tested.

If the tests are run on the same computer with the same internet connection, with the same processes running in the background, then the test is a valid measurement (for your system).

My Friends ...How are you measuring one browser is fast and other is not... Based on your internet speed..?

There are so may things other than the Browser and your internet link which effect your internet speed.. Like your Operating system it self and its under lying TCP/IP stack also the remote host that you are communicating with ... You can't just blame your ISP and broswer for slow performace while your are using P2P and downloading 4 or 5 Movies at same time ..

"Opera is the fastest browser in the world." ALLEGEDLY!!!

There are articles all over the web comparing the speed of the various browsers, and they all draw different conclusions! Here's the latest I read; http://www.webmonkey.com/blog/Clock_Browser_Speeds_with_Webmonkey_s_Stopwatch

After getting used to Firefox ad-ins, I can't do without them. I also upgraded to Firefox 3 yesterday. Adblock Plus works fine with it and so does NoScript.

whoami...me too Opera fan....

Ooera 9.5 is quite cool looks wise....I hate Internet Explorer...always spying on your PC, hand-in-glove with Windows.

I think IE has lost a lot of favour with the people and many are afraid to even upgrade to the new version as it detects pirated Windows & keeps a snag on your desktop.

With this Microsoft I think has shot itself in its foot. By declaring that the person is using conterfiet windows it proved that it is spying on the person's PC and sending information to Microsoft without consent.

I'm an Opera person myself and they've released 9.5 a few days ago.

Opera is the fastest browser in the world.

Yes, the good thing about firefox (open-source add-ons) is also the bad thing, cos they aren't always compatible with new versions of the program. I'm missing my ad-blocker!!!

first waited until the 00:00 GMT yesterday, then waited until 10AM PST yesterday, and then their server stopped responding. got pissed off, went to sleep and downloaded it now to find most of my add-ons are not supported! :(

i guess the 24hrs for the world record will be up in...4 hrs!
