Maid ‘beaten up for wishing to go home’

The housemaid shows the injuries allegedly inflicted by the son of her sponsor
By Nour Abuzant
AN INDONESIAN housemaid was admitted to hospital on Sunday with multiple bruises covering the upper part of her body.
The 23 year old claimed she had been beaten by the son of her sponsor because “he refused to let her return to her home country after she had finished her 2-year contract.”
She said the attack lasted an hour and a half, adding: “He used to drink water in between and continued to beat me for some 90 minutes. Then he asked me to continue working.”
The housemaid claimed that other members of the Qatari family did not intervene to save her because they were “afraid of him”.
She added that the man had regularly hit her in the past but she had stayed to fulfil the obligations of her contract.
The 74-year-old female sponsor of the maid later said that her son used to beat his four daughters as well and that it was “a matter of habit”.
The day after her ordeal, the maid escaped from the house and contacted the recruitment agency that arranged her employment. In turn, they informed her embassy.
A police report was filed in Khalifa police station, but at press time, no action had been taken.
A hospital report confirmed that the maid was badly beaten. As her status was “stable” she was discharged from hospital after receiving treatment.
Not surprised, heard of such cases alot of times.
Hope he gets his punishment and learns a lesson.

You know, that you are screwed, when ur phone rings, while you sneak into your own house like a thief and your wife is asleep at 3 am in the morning... Perhaps that would be the last time you enter your own house lol.
--------
Sounds like it was only women in the house at the time, they were probably scared.

Hmm yes I know what you are talking about, but those bruises did not happen in one minute he had to be continually beating her and I am surprised no one came to her aid.
We are on the same page here - this is Qatari country and they have to deal with this in their own way.
Women have been misused and abused through decades all over the world, only this particular abuse happened to be published I hate to think what goes on elsewhere. However, I do ask myself why did they not try to stop him
I feel for the girl and feel for her situation.
Do these people still exist? Fear god and no one else but him, what did she do to deserve this or be treated like that? Wish if I can put a hand on him, I will make him Shawerma and feed him to the dogs & cats :(
For god sake they are humans I swear :(

this is HUMAN VS. MONSTER!!!
do you think the one who did this is a human...?
well...?

I would like to see what action the government will undertake because of what this man did.
Or maybe they'll just leave it in the air as most usual domestic beatings are left in the middle east countries?
friend4fun27...unfortunately I am out of the country. Perhaps you can help this lady with your own initiative? You can contact the thread creator al.baloushi. He is Qatari and can assist you with Arabic translation should you need it at the poilce station.
-------------------------------------
Pray for them???? How about open some centres for domestic violence, or petition for stricter sentences, or report these idiots to the police if you find out about them. Praying will do a whole lot of nothing.

@ sidbawany: Yes, pray for them. That'll sort it out.
this is just plain sick
Great Sidbawany!! It's that kinda discourse which perpetuates the problem!!
Abuse is not only physical...Working here has taught me such a lot about the human mind..I have never in my professional experience worked with so many passive aggressives. Those whom cannot channel their raw human emtions....
this type of animal behaviour is going on for years and years. no heart and no respect for women. We can only pray for them nothing else. May Allah Help them all. Ameen
and thank god i am not under this guys sponsorship otherwise i'll get the same beating for not completing a report on time.
Spot on Gypsy.
Abuse of maids and family is by no means limited to the Qataris, that's a huge generalization. Also when it comes to punishment no one here receives strong punishments, same as anywhere else in the world. Hell, if you want to devolve into generlizations, then most abuse cases I hear of seem to come from another Arabic community that shall not be named.
What needs to be done, here and everywhere else, is more access to help and more information, so that people know that even if it is a "habit" it's wrong.

The case direction is going like this now:-
The woman admited the hospital after "The 74-year-old female sponsor of the maid later said that her son used to beat his four daughters" because they want to change the case he is sick or any other family problem. after close the chapter
Gone are the days when Qataris were known for their kind heart, brave act and their helping mentality. Its long gone.
Now the maximum a Qatari will do hearing or seeing this news is say " Miskeen Allah Kareem, Shunu sawwi (What to Do)".
They have lost their ability to act to impulses. May God help them rise again.
Tallg: I think I know this thread is not YET turned into Religious Warfare, but you were almost knocked out when you brought out WASTA...and that was also a quick fire topic of debate a few posts up, thats why I say, stop fighting on this website and screw it up, rather step out into the sun and make a difference...
Daisy...well i dont know whats superficial rubbish, but i think as much you understand this place, i do equally well...and whatever you mentioned there, I agree that wholly, things need to change is what I am also saying, but not by ranting on this WEBSITE, rather it shud be taken up at the higher diplomatic level in gtting the Govts. of Individual Host Countries to look into this warfare and rape of their Citizen's Human rights Issue by coming to a new place...NOW DO YOU GET IT ,...come on knock off the DUST from there, you might be able to get this into your brians...
Superficial rubbish Ksarat, look a liitle deeper into the subject/issue. There is clearly an issue here and I would argue it lays at the bottom of repression!!
Qatari's had a religious identity, which followed them throughout all aspects of life.
Now however, there is a melting pot of cultures, choices, opportunities...The current law does no longer provide an ethical foundation nor does it pertain to finding a solution!!
I am not attacking Islam, I'm suggesting the religious codes are no longer relevant!!
ksarat - I agree a lot of threads turn into "religious warfare", but I think you're wrong in this case. People are discussing the issue and religion hasn't been mentioned once.
It is not a sport, it happens and it is not just about locals there are many other nations here who hit and beat their maids.
What you read is not always the truth, I know many many locals who treat their maids with respect, and I do know many other nations who do not treat their maids with respect with under Europeans.
The thing is not to discuss about who does and doesn't do this or that, but to rectify the situation with clear guidelines for employing maids.
In fact live in maids should not be allowed in my opinion unless they can have free time and 8 hours rest.
It means women have to be much stronger in the Gulf against this process.
Sorry mate didnt step into your profile to check Mr / Ms.
I totally understand that mate, I know this is an OPEN FORUM and I for one would never ask people to stop talking...but talking about a few things, and turning the threads into a communal ora religious warfare is rather tooo much these days on QL, and especially in this topic, trust me a HUMAN being would surely feel sorry for this poor lady, but is it something that we as a normal expat can rant about that Govt. shud do this, this is about HUMAN RIGHTS my friends, and we dont have a Human Rights Watchdog to take care of this, and then who needs to take it up or set it up, the Individual Embassies of the countries...
right or wrong...
Actually I have heard such issues done bu expatriates as well, and names nor nationalities where mentioned... but they mentioned in the newspaper that the woman was sentenced to execution and her husband was sentenced to 15 years in Jail for covering up for his wife's crime.
the problem in this case, that this case will be dropped and that criminal will not be brought to justice.
I wonder why Qatar has not been nominated for the 2016
It seems to be some kind of sport in this region.
Defnitly this will be an sport event when Olympics comes to Doha... A dream !!!!..
-------------------------------------
Dont Dream.. Do it Now
I just say it like i see it here, and what i read and see on tv.
Lets put it this way, its not the first time a maid has been beaten is it ? It seems to be some kind of sport in this region.

Mr. ksarat... this platform of Qatar living is a liberal forum to speak your heart out.
If we would be clipped in here for our sayings, then the originality of the forum would be lost.
So everyone here has the right to say whatever he/she feels and in this case particulary please try to understand the discussions going on
I've no evidence, however I understand this form of abuse takes place in many Qatari families and not only by the men.
Hence, what is it about the mind set of this particular culture? Why inflict pain upon a vulnerable person? I have wondered whether many of the issues regarding violence towards the 'subordinate' are manifested through the Sharia Law?
Perhaps a new law grounded in politics..as Kemal demanded is a way forward. Perhaps it's time for Qatar to move from a Religious state into a Political state?
Anybody agree???
I think your comments are uncalled for, there is law here and there is justice "Paul" is not living here but in Bahrain, and he is and (although he does not want to go back to UK )he will always complain about locals, and not everything goes according to WASTA.
Then speaking of that don't Indians have WASTA too, come to think of it, so does every ohter nation who has a friend somewhere in the upper class, so your comments are unjust.
Things are changing, time to loose the chips on the shoulders don't you think????
At Daisy...Very true, to open the mouth and raise concern is one step to the next level, but not like this on a forum that keeps ranting and diverting and drifting away from a topic of this kind...if you wanna really talk, i would suggest, pick up the phone and see what you could do...
Friend...well my dear friend, if I were to be in that place, first of all, I wont, so I guess we ought to be stopping at that point as simple as that...it doesntget to that level for me, where I m helpless and clueless...you have a mouth, why cant the person speak out and name the sponsor and see if anything is possible...
THEN AGAIN WASTA my friend, a person who s been drink driving nothing happened to him, whats going to happen in this case...
This is an issue that needs to be taken not at this lovel over an OPEN FORUM (as you all say), this should be an Inter-Government Discussion that has to take place at that level...
There is something called a deportation center where quite a few people are stranded do you know, go there and have a look, things could open your eyes and you might close your mouth in disgust in the state of affairs of Inter-Country Politics...my friend...
What do you think?
Even his mother should be arrested for encouraging his acts. How did she let him beat his sisters? This monster is having fun with his beating hobby.
ksarat16
Iftomorrow someone comes and hits you the same way or worst...will u be able to say the same words "THEIR LAND, LEAVE IT OR LIVE WITH IT" with the same attitude..?
ITS not only two options.. U can also "CHANGE SITUATIONS AND LIVE WITH IT" or "CAN GO AWAY".
-------------------------------------
Come On lets hav fun !!!! 2day is Urs, Dont Dream.. Do it Now
Are you suggesting we, 'shut up'! If we took on your mentality nothing would ever happen for those whom are under represented! Having an open discussion of what can be done is a step foraward.
Sorry Ksarat, I disagree with your naive binary oppositional solution!!
diamond IF u r words are true and ur really working to get things improved... as u told some of us are trying to improve conditions for vulnerable domestic workers through proper legal channels .
if your and authorities are really tring out...then !!!
Your responce shud be different... You have to take the initiative to get the CASE registered and make sure that the poor house maid gets justice....
-------------------------------------
Come On lets hav fun !!!! 2day is Urs, Dont Dream.. Do it Now
What in the world is going on in here...damn you guys have to talk about a specific subject, cant just get your lazy damn azzes to be on that topic, have to DRIFT away even if the wind isnt blowing usless people...stay on the topic...
And even then, what can be done...nothing, What Paul says is right, Freaking Wasta overtakes a lot for the Locals...and this is the case in quite a few countries, you know people in the right place you get your job done...simple rule of the Land boys and girls, so stop WHINING ABOUT IT...as Paul puts it, THEIR LAND, LEAVE IT OR LIVE WITH IT...
GEEEEEZUZ...You people can rant about anything and everything...shame on you blokes...LOL!!!
This kind of abuse is a manifestation of the views on labour by the locals.
The maid is sponsored by her employer, she has no money, no place to go, no funds to hire a lawyer to file a complaint and followup her case ..
The employer will offer her freedeom against waiving all claims to hand her he passport and hopfully a return ticket ..
The Embassy can not provide shelter for long time ...
She will sign a waiver as i am sure she is now desperate to go home ...
Done deal ..
"The best way to predict the future is to create it".
despicable what this guy did, and i would love to be locked in a room with him for 1 hr, to give him a taste of his own medicine.
My comment was, Wasta is used all the time, and dont give me any of that "No its not " bollocks, because you see it here in Bahrain all the time as well.
its 1 rule for locals,1 rule for expats as well you know.
The government and the people have to want to make a difference, but im guessing that aint gonna happen anytime soon, cos Qataris know that they can ,literally, get away with murder !

I'm not sure whether the physical abuse is manefested through national superiority. Abusers are often those whom have been abused.
I'm not an expert but this amount of anger and violence could be a symptom of psychological transference. He could be unable to confront the true object of his anger..hence he attacks those he can.
I respect other cultures but I do believe there could be many more suffering from this kinda repressed/redirected anger.
I feel the laws here regarding human relations, dress, moral conduct etc is a paradox with the developing city it aspires to become.
What blacklisted he should be beaten until he can't open his mouth, the mother too deserves much more.
diamond
No, I have to disagree with you here, the proper channels don't work and men's rights superceed womens.
There is no justification for this kind of brutality, if you accept it from your husband (you meant globally) it is one thing, but others don't have to accept it. Women beating and abuse goes on all over the world but this takes the cream of the cake Qater has a reputation.
Women have to take a stand against beatings and it has to stop - maids are working to feed their families back home - he should and has to pay her for what he did + blood money of a sort, she deserves better from her employer.
He has to go to jail for life and all the women beaters like him put them on the chain gang repairing roads see how real work is.
MR PAUL..so ur justifying the act of this humiliation...
Its simple coz ur not affected...some one else is hurted. IF this law is not protecting that house maid..The same thing will be applicable for u also in future....
-------------------------------------
Come On lets hav fun !!!! 2day is Urs, Dont Dream.. Do it Now
May be that guy is a drug addict...such acts can only be committed by people "out of their minds"....either under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
She has been released from hospital....to go where?
Back to the same place?
Can she change her sponsor or does she gets deported?
If she gets deported then there is something wrong with the LAW!
It's funny how people are so quick to judge. Do you think this type of behavior is acceptable in all Qatari homes? I don't think so. It's such a shame that this has happened, the guy that did this looks like he has some sort of psychological problems as it also said in the papers that he beats up his own sisters. This is not about Qatari's treating others bad, it's about a mentally sick man, who will beat his wife if he is married. I hope this maid will recover from this. God help her.
tallg- im not saying each qatari is above the law.. But as u itself said WASTAA making the difference.. So i wondered Is WAASTAA is a part of Qatar Law..
So one can say proudly tat coz of Waasta I hv escaped frm the punishment...
-------------------------------------
Come On lets hav fun !!!! 2day is Urs, Dont Dream.. Do it Now
Poor woman her injuries are horrendous...I cant believe its accepted in the family as a habit.
Agencies are to blame also, they are responsible too. They hand over maids and never look back to see how they are getting along or getting treated.....
Don't get me wrong, I'm well aware that use of wasta is rife here. Heck, it's helped me out in the past! But people are assuming that all Qatari's get away with everything, which simply isn't the case.
Its hearing from years conditions will be improved...more environmental friendly laws will come....
But atlast things are happening just opposite it.. See this insident. Only discussions are going on these kind of law changes... But never done.. Exit permit, 5 years ban coming, an expact cannot sponser their parents... IS tis all in Positive direction...
This all justifying why Qatar is in Tier 3 rating... And its becoming worst..
-------------------------------------
Come On lets hav fun !!!! 2day is Urs, Dont Dream.. Do it Now
more pronounced and used than yer may think Tallg. But this is just my opinion of course.
And to Friend4fun27, yer, there are 2 sets of laws, expats and nationals...how do ya think they keep on getting light sentences or get off scott free altogether.
As some of them say, "our country, our rules. If yer dont like it,then leave"

friend4fun27 - so are you saying that every single Qatari is above the law, and wouldn't be prosecuted if they beat their maid?
i think there was some arabic saying like "Wasta is above the Law"
"He who does not thank people, does not thank Allah" prophet Muhammed (pbuh)
Is WASTA is also part of law here...
Which makes 2 laws for Qatar. One law for all Expatriates and Other law for all Local people...
this is wat happening here..and "tallg" - You are telling this right ?
-------------------------------------
Come On lets hav fun !!!! 2day is Urs, Dont Dream.. Do it Now
suggest that each nationality who wants a maid find them from their own country, so then this problem would be solved.
but will these people do here
As I said, there are undoubtedly cases where wasta is used, but it is not common to all. So to say it is is insulting to Qatar and to Qataris.
But TallG you must have noticed yourself how much these locals are injust to expats and how they are being treated by their authorities.
So on seeing so much cases in majority one has to think that these are common to all of them
what an evil act. they should do something about this guy, he has to face the justice.
this is shame for Qatari community they also should condemn this damaging thing.
"He who does not thank people, does not thank Allah" prophet Muhammed (pbuh)
such brutal act can be done only by a psycho... or for his sadist pleasure.. Why the hell his sisters tolerated him, Why they didnt complain to the police?....at least we dont have to see this cruelty today. Poor girl…I feel sorry for her
Obviously this is a disgraceful thing to happen, but I'm also shocked by some of the comments on here. Do people really think that being Qatari automatically puts you above the law?
Yes, I'm sure there are cases where some use their wasta to get "let off" or receive a more lenient punishment, but that isn't the case for everyone. Try not to be so naive and generalise everything.
That poor woman and his poor wife and daughters. :(

Of course all my fellow countrymen are not innocent. Far from it as is alleged here. And some of us are trying to improve conditions for vulnerable domestic workers through proper legal channels. Regulations have already been changed regarding conditions for domestic workers and more changes to come also.
The alleged victim has to file a complaint aginst the person who she says did this to her. Then the police have to follow it up. It will go to a court case if she wishes that. She should have as much evidence as possible for court.
-------------------------------------
Yeah its better to fine some other countries with a better rule.....As with the news law etc the situation will be more worst....
QATAR NOW ITSELF NOT A ATTRACTIVE PLACE FOR SKILLED HUMAN RESOURCE...
SO BETTER ONLY ROBOTS WILL STAY BACK HERE TO DO THE WORKS..

I'm sure no action would be taken against that inhuman crap of shit as the authorities are from them.
This is not for the first time such incident took place but yes she had the courage to run away and brouhgt it to the light. This behaviour is common to all qatari families but the degree of extorsion varies.
With this kind of filthy mindframe of not respecting other humans because of arrogancy would lead them no where.
who murdered three in the street, remember the guy, he got 9 months, nine f*****g months.
I'll bet even an hour, this guy will not see the inside of prison???????? HE IS QATARI and this is their country. Hope they learn what JUSTICE means!!!!!!!!
"dgoodrebel will always be the rebellious good one"
Such inhuman treatment goes unpunished... This maltreatment of expariate labourers is more common than people think, yet punishment of such offenders never take place. A sad state of affairs for a Country that claims to be making leaps and bounds into the Foreign Market Recognition.
oh my GOD!
Don't settle at being ordinary. Life is too precious. Enjoy. Have fun. Spend. Travel. Shop. Love. Fight. There's nothing wrong with being REAL.
this has become a regular feature in the middle east, maid beaten, thrashed, burnt, raped etc..
the worst part is the "no action has been taken"!!
pls find me a job in the dubai or some other city..with the new law and way of life here.. i am ready to throw in the towel and i am not even a year old in this place!!
still learning...
and maybe seeing this will shock some of our Qatari friends on here, and make them realize not all their countrymen are innocent.
Only the Qataris and their government can take action to stop this happening time and time again......

THAT WHY THEY ARE NOT CHANGING SPONSORSHIP LAW. AND THEY ARE THINKING ALL EXPATRIATES ARE SLAVES.
In the abusive man's mind I'm sure he felt justified for doing what he did. Of course he was dead wrong but sadly I doubt he'll ever see that. Not only should this person be blacklisted from having a maid again, any agency that provides him with a maid in the future should face criminal charges.
but thanks god she had the courrage to run away and to report it.wish her all the best and hope even if this guy is Qatari he will not escape from law.
great law.. Untill press no action is been taken the culprit. Imagine
action is as slow as a snail...medical report is a valid evidence. what are they waiting for?
these people should not be given maids anymore. let's see if they can do the chores themselves...
