BAGHDAD - Iraq has announced a competition to design a new national flag and is calling on Iraqis and artists and designers inside and outside of the country to take part.

Lawmaker Mufeed al-Jazairi announced the competition on Tuesday. He says interested people have until the end of September to submit their designs.

Al-Jazairi says a committee will select three designs to be presented to the parliament, which will vote on a new flag by the end of this year.

Earlier this year, Iraq's parliament voted to strip the three green stars of Saddam Hussein's toppled Baath party from the country's flag. But parliament kept the script of "Allahu Akbar," or "God is Great" in green.

I know all of you out there know just how important a symbol a flag is and it is an important step in defining/declaring/stating something apart. I think that it is great that they are removing any symbolism to the Ba'ath party and they are keeping the field of green with the kufic script of 'Allahu Akbar'.

agree with the author of the peice, a totally unbiased winner of the design competition?? NOT!!!

A new flag should be way down the list of priorities, even dropped completely, a flag shows pride for your country, how can they be proud when it is in such a state!!!!

Sounds like we're overdue for a Roman, ahem Greek holiday ;)

It is a known fact that the proselytizing faiths adopt many regional customs in order to appeal to the locals and win converts. What I wanna know is is there more than one heaven and is it really getting overcrowded, cause it seems like nowadays everyone gets in scot free.

flo - I thought I saw a near full moon last night :P

As if the Iraqis have nothing to worry about abd are very bored - like most QLers - to change their flag. They are appealing many countries to cancel their debts.

Imagine what is the cost involved in changing the flag. Let aside the security issue, they are suffering lack of water supplies, power, fuel, medical care.

Ths is very stupid and crazy

Pakistani Flag Meaning:

Green is a traditional Islamic color and the crescent and star are also Islamic symbols. The white stripe represents the non-Muslim, minority, religious groups in Pakistan.

According to modern meaning, the green represents prosperity; white symbolizes peace; the white crescent represents progress; and the white star represents light and knowledge.

Eco dont be stupid, U know that the crescent in the Pakistani flag represents that Pakistan is an Islamic nation. And for your ignorance, the 1st of every Islamic month is when the moon appears as a crescent.

This is an interesting article:

http://islam.about.com/od/history/a/crescent_moon.htm

Then again, all religions have been borrowing symbols from one another for centuries, as have non-religious entities.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_symbolism

Which leads me to remark once again .... all religions are in the time of man, and where they were once used to explain natural phenomena that science had no explanation for, they have over the centuries been used to control the populace through fear of reprisal after death.
