Racism in Qatar...

By thexonic

I realized that Qatar is probably the only country where alot of people are racist. It's like an explosion of racim here, its not like its happening behind people, but in their faces. Arabs against south east asians, white people against arabs, south east asians against each other, arabs against each other. U know even in College of North Atlantic, I've seen some weird stuff. I was there a few times and every time I go there, everyone is sitting in a group, the group is labeled by the nationalities. U have Lebanese, Palestinian, Syrian, Pakistani, Indians, Qatari... etc. I think we need some kind of cultural awareness program in this country. I think the only people that dont have any racism or dont discriminate in this country are the members of Qatarliving. Seriously, I grew up in here and even when I used to be in High school, I felt like an outsider. What do you guys think? I mean being racist to others is one thing, but even to their own people??? now thats messed up.

racism here is soo in your face that u cant help but think about it twice, kinda hard to ignore it sometimes!!

racist slurs here and there, i kinda did change the way i use to socialize. but it has changed now it depends on a person how they act towards each other.and i personally think it also has to do with how one was brought up/thought and from now one i really follow the saying "treat others the way u want to be treated" if "some" people choose to be arrogant i treat them the way they deserve.

n it feels good to always remind urself that at the end of the day thank god u dont live that way, where ur only aim is to criticize others in any way!

racism exists everywhere.

cuz its exhausting to hate!! easy n blissful to love n ignore

but thexonic it would be reallyy great if there were lots of cultural programmes, lectures, events etc etc organized here in qatar. country could use some intervention, maybe we can create awareness of the lack of cultural events and pass this idea onto big event holders who can look into it

Accept britain did none of those things! They abandoned their child, as you put it, to feed themselves, clothed themselves and develop their own personalities. Then at the coming of age they started whipping us for bad behaviour! Naturally we rebelled against a parent we had never known and allowed all the anti british (irish, germans) to talk us into an uprising.

brit, I cannot generalize, but, when I was 18 I said to my father:" I go now. I am fed up with being controlled. I want to live my life as I want it. Your style is not my style." And because he nurtured me up to the age of 18 he had no means to stop me (asides from the fact that the law was on my side). So, yes, he'd let me go, but he had no choice.

-------------------------

This was sent to me by a friend when i was still back in the Philippines. When this forum topic about Discrimination started, I thought of this and find myself smiling.

This was written by a black guy in Texas and is so funny. What a great sense of humor and creativity!!!). But since my color is somewhat lighter, I've changed the word from "Black" to "Brown" to make it more applicable to my own race.

--------

When I born, I brown,

when I grow up, I brown,

when I go in sun, I brown,

when I cold, I brown,

when I scared, I brown,

when I sick, I brown,

and when I die, I still brown.

You white folks....

when you born, you pink,

when you grow up, you white,

when you go in sun, you red,

when you cold, you blue,

when you scared, you yellow,

when you sick, you green,

when you bruised, you purple,

and when you die, you gray.

So who you callin' colored folks ???

Racism occurs everywhere and in every country. Although, the question is not about does it exist but what as the combined human race can we do about it?

At a functon when my son was little he struck up a conversaton with a little boy who was black. When asked later about who he was talking to he said the boy over there with the blue shirt. Someone commented you mean the black boy and my son said no - I said his shirt was blue. He did not see the color of his skin - he saw the shirt. He had no concept of skin color - the boy was just a boy in a blue shirt. Just one little comment from a young boy was an eye opening experience for me that I will never forget.

I believe children are like a painting - they start as a blank canvas and as they grow, they are influenced by their surroundings. But the biggest influence are the parents. I can't control everything and everyone my children are exposed to but I can bring perspective to the things that they witness. And I can do my best to not only tell them that all people are created equal but to reinforce that belief by my actions. I commend JBH, Scarlett, and others in how they have raised their children. If every parent raised their children to treat others how they themselves would like to be treated - imagine the type of world we would live in.

I think what happens is that they come here on well paid positions, are treated with respect, gat maids for the foirst time, are called "sir" or "madam" by those from developing nations, and it goes to their head. they actually start beliveing that they are superior..

I do agree with Scarlett that people of the same nationality tend to group together as it is the easist way to hang out but yes, racism here do exist not only in color but on salary scale...We have a friend who migrated to Canada and got a Canadian passport. Instead of settling down there, he is still coming over to work as obviously, his pay is many times over as he is calssified as Canadian but same job, same color.

It is normal to have communities belonging to certain parts of the world socilaizing together. Most countries have places like "China Town" for example. We do not have such things here. We do not have people of a certain nationality living in cantons. This is unlike many places in the world.

We have here people of different nationalities living in the same building or in the same compound, working n the same company, going to the same restaurant, etc.

The irony. Is that you, thexonic, posted a thread once looking for Shia amongs QLers. Which I found it a very racist thing. And now you are complaining about racism.

Call me a racist if you want, but I’m tired of people over-reacting when someone strays from the script of acceptable dialog.

I believe nearly all of these cases are ignorance.

However, I personally have become terrified of opening my mouth around individuals of a minority group.

I sincerely want to know how QL members are supposed to learn better behavior when they are kicked out of work for what was an ignorant mistake.

I hope these people (men/women alike) would wake up that they're no better than the rest of us...regarless of nationality....

It has been and will always be an issue.

It's a strange fact of life. When you ask people if they're racist, most of them will say they're not.. but on the actual note on that given circumstance it changes.

If you say racism is dead then there is something wrong, but the idea of racism to be eradicated is only but a dream.

The simple fact is that in general "Birds of a feather, flock together".. I used to work on a Naval base... Mainly Americans , Ausralians and Brits.. Within the yanks, it was common for the Black guys to "hang out together".. Even within the Filipinos, the uys from Sebu and those from Manila did no really mix..

Expatriate life is extremely strange.. You re "thrown" together and expected to get on with each other..

I take th same approach as Abu American, but most people like to stick with their own because of the comfort level/

One thing that bugs me is when journolists write articles in this country, they will always put the nationality of people in print.

"so-and-so, an Indian in Qatar says that.... or so-and-so, a nepalese worker said....

what does it matter what his nationality is? If he's a criminal or whatever, it doesn't matter where he had come from, he did the deed, end of story.

I don't think it's so much racism as xenophobia. Was at Garvey's for all of 2 seconds last night, surrounded by people, who, while not racist I don't believe, would have a hard time talking to someone who wasn't white and English/Scottish/ etc. Mostly I think it's because none of them are here for very long and the first thing one does as an expat (and I think it's perfectly natural) is seek out someone similar to you, or a comfort zone.

When I was in Korea it took me awhile before I started becoming friends with Koreans, not because I was racist against them, but because I simply didn't understand them and was so far out of my comfort zone that it made me socially awkward. I think that might be a bit of what you're seeing at CNA thexonic. Especially here, where if you say the wrong thing you could deeply offend someone.

However, after awhile, when you becoming comfortable with your new environment you start hanging out with more people from more backgrounds. It's natural. Now I honestly have to say I can count all my white friends on one hand. And NONE of them are Canadian. (Except for my new friend Qatarisun ;) )

my filipino housemaid was just in the que to get some kiddie meals for my kids when a Qatari rushed into the scene...the filipino Mcdonald's staff took his order first...isn't that racism? is it because he's Qatari and she's "just a filipino housemaid?" or was he just intimidated by this Qatari's behavior? probably the best way to go about this is to post a thread inviting folks to a meeting at X place, X time...and then see who posts or who shows up. I was guilty of doing this a while back and after the first few times, it really got to be a large crowd. But..everyone was so nice and we all had such a good time. Please, just be careful of those that wish to ruin relations between people on here, for whatever small minded reasons they have. You'll also find that most the females on here will not attend unless they have someone else to go with them, for safety reasons.

I was driving at a decent speed, decent enough to crash into someone and kill the person lol, the road was empty and this biach pops up.

She was soo shameless she didn't look at me as if it was my fault and left. I wanted to get out and beat the living crap out of her.

very good point, however..Qatari are a very private people...altho the ones I've met and made friends with are always the most polite and humorous folks, its still difficult to know the family life.

I would also never think anything cultural would be boring. I certainly would attend to learn more about the Arab culture and traditions. What I learned about the area and people here before I arrived, is now quite funny, having experienced life in Doha. Its like anywhere else...the slanted viewpoints that you get from your own country and what is reality are so very different!! And yes, that goes from both directions! I have met friends from Iran that thought all Americans were mean and rude...and were so surprised when they met actual Americans who were kind and friendly that it changed their opinions immediately. Its sad that we can't all just make our own impressions of other countries by ourselves without the outside pressure of propaganda.

I do, however know about other educational places. They do tend to segregrate but at the same time, I've seen many many friendships that have students of different cultures flying to visit their friends in different countries. Most of the time I think its more about what makes you comfortable and its human nature to stay within your comfort zone and be with those that have the same background as yourself. It might be more a matter of shyness than racism as it can be a bit intimidating to go up to someone that looks and sounds totally different than yourself and try and start a conversation. thexonic, you are a very outgoing person, but most people aren't..and it IS hard to meet others if your self confidence isn't high. Its probably NOT that they are judging others but judging themselves.

Scarlett, hmmm, about CNA, I didn't mean they were racist. It's just that they don't interact that much, rather they prefere to stay in their own groups of nationalities. There could be many reasons, may be they feel comfortable with people who speak the same language, culture, common ground or may be they are afraid that they might face discrimination, hence avoid contact. Come to think of it, I said they have groups of nationalities, Lebanese, Palestinians, Syrians, Qataris etc... they all speak arabic and english both in CNA, so why these groups? All I am saying is that people need to be more aware of different cultures before they judge others or be judged.

As a Qatari I hang out with anyone. I don't really see race. However I feel so sad at the fact that there are so many foreigners in my country who are racist towards Qataris. It doesn't make sense to me.

People are too quick to label and categorize individuals, but the fact of the matter is, we're all unique. We all do things our own way.

A rude brit is not a rude brit, he's a rude person. A crazy Qatari driver is a crazy driver. DELETE the nationality because it's irrelevant.

I was in a pissy mood last night so you wouldn't have wanted to see me!!! Altho...we might have cancelled each other out had I showed up!! I did get some decent sleep last night tho. Tell you what...jet lag, going out and having 2 drinks, and getting old, isn't a good combination for me!!!

Swiss...goodness girl...if I wrote a book on my life, half of it would be blank pages because I either couldn't remember or it was censored due to my sense of humor!!

been in Texas for the past month, and before that, have been rather out of touch with QL due to my dogs and working with a volunteer group. I'm back in town now, jet lagged, but back...and am trying to get back on track with life in Doha. Had to laugh..I scheduled my holiday back in March, left on the 20th of June...hubby stayed here for work..then I flew back on the 20th of July, and he flew IN to Texas the same day!! We met in the Houston airport and had lunch, he drove home and I flew to Doha!! We have GOT to schedule our trips better from now on!!

Hopefully you have been doing well! When you going to get yourself over to Doha for a visit??

well i think is a bit of all.and it happens everywhere.

just yesterday i talked with some friends about the situation here in Swiss. We sayd its hard to ignore some idiots because they have the loudest voice and as louder and longer someone talks as more peoples listen to him.So all we can do is to close our ears for such kind of peoples and to go on as a good example by inviting and listening to others,no matter which nationality they have.

I'm sure that does happen, with the jealousy on the have and the have nots...but what I've experienced when going out to lunch with friends of different ethnic backgrounds is that in some cases, one race will treat the companion I an with, with total disdain, to the point of talking only to my face and handing the bill to me, like my friend can't afford to pay his/her portion or that they even exist. I find this particularly funny since some of them have much more income than I do!!

Corne, I have to say, and am not being rude on this issue, but I have never experienced racism on the scale that its practiced over in this area. Perhaps its just more visible. I do know that it does exist in America, and I have been the recipient of it on several occasions, but even there, its supposedly known that the South has more racism than the North..but I find that to be the reverse, having lived in both sections of the country. The only known cure for racism is education. Sadly, too many people from everywhere in the world choose not to be educated.

Doha is such a small town when it comes to gossip and rumors. Hmmm but can't it be that some don't hang out with others simply because they don't like them ? Maybe it has nothing to do with race or religion but just with the fact that they don't get along?

Racism is everywhere, there's probably an evil little racist gnome in all of us but who cares? As long as we treat people with respect and try to keep an open mind, life goes on. Talking about the subject more won't really change anything. And yet I'm here talking about it lol...way to go Corne! haha

I'm pbobable not qualified to comment but here goes;

Scarlet is right about people bounching together because they are similar, it's human nature and it is easier some times.

Because I am curious and probably even nosy, I tend to do the opposite.

I deliberately sit and eat with people who are not similar to me, because I like to.

Sometimes I have my countrymen wondering why I do this because I have been with them all morning but I leave them to have lunch.

I have made conscious efforts to put my kids is situations where they are the "odd one out" as they have grown up and it has worked very well.

They will ask where someone is from if it is relevant to the conversation but otherwise I have never heard them asking.

My daughter was tlling me a tale from a club she was in when she was little and she said "I was training withe the "brown guy".

The only brown guy I knew was Rocky, a West Indian fella, but she insisted it wasn't him.

"But Rocky is the only brown guy there" I insisted.

"No the other one, with the tattoos" she said.

Him with the tattoos was a white guy who was a bit fond of himself who spent a lot of time on the sun-beds.

I learnt a lot from my daughter then.

Teach your kids right and encourage them to judge the person by his actions and it will help set them up as better people in the future.

BTW, you can't just lump white people together under one banner because we are all different depending upon where we come from also.

Have fun : )

So what you're saying vips_one is that there is no racism based on colour? You're implying that whether I feel it or not I should know that racism exists. Please do not attempt to tell me how to feel. I know full well that racism exists. I am quite happy with my salary, I have not been a victim of racism along the lines you describe...sorry to disappoint you, but I refuse to be bitter because I "do not have the right passport". I am not denying that exists. I am saying I have not experienced it. So who are you to tell me otherwise, my shadow?

Dude!! When they define the salary you should earn by the passport you have, that is the basics for racism... Are we talking about skin color racism ?? I dont think so... We are talking about racism of your nationality... People will treat you differently... It is denial not to think there is no racism, because there is NO EQUALITY

people sitting in groups according to nationalities isn't usually racist, its because they tend to cluster together due to likenesses in their lives, language, lifestyles, etc.

Abu...I'm like you..I hang with every nationality and religion people. I find the multitude of differences between everyone totally fascinating and love to know more about different people and cultures.

Labda...my youngest son's best friend is black, and like your sister, the two of them have the best time stirring up trouble with the issue. I've heard some folks make an innocent comment and then get a shocked look on their face, say Ohh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you..and my son will say.."its ok, he knows he's black." To which his friend will about fall on the floor laughing.

And...it was lovely getting to meet you labda...You are an extremely attractive young lady.

As far as the racism here...yes it is shocking. I've personally never experienced anything like it anywhere else.

sitting in groups doesnt mean they r racist, i think racism is very little in CNAQ.

CNAQ does have good atmosphere.

ur rite that indian will be with the indian group, palestinian with palestinian and they hardly interact with the other groups, I do not know the reason :) but there are gud qataris, indians, palestinians who interact well with each other in CNAQ
