It's Official! Qataris have a super secret cl

whoami
By whoami

Was quite proud at this sarcastic moment so I thought I'd post it in a seperate thread.

Haven't you heard? Us Qataris are all in this super secret club!

We ALL; when I say all I don't mean a few, some, alot, or a majority, I mean every single last Qatari, wake up in the morning and agree to a schedule.

Take today for example, we all agreed that we will all swirve on the first foreigner we see while talking to our mistresses on a mobile phone with our foot out of the window.

That's just phase 1!

Phase 2, we're all going to go to the shopping mall, wink at the first philipino girl we see and marry the first one that winks back. We can have four wives remember? Of course you do, that's one of the only things people think about when they think of Islam. After strapping a bomb to our fourth wife, we frolic around on the grass screaming obsenities to expatriates, sometimes the police will join in too! All police in Qatar are corrupt after all, and since they're here, they must be in on our plan too!

We've even got ALL other nationalities that might be confused with Qataris in it as well! Yep! Syrians, Lebanese, Kuwaiti's, Emiratis, even Indians too. We gave them 1,000 Qatari Riyals from the money we made from the oil field out back and asked them to wear thobes (since only Qataris wear thobes) and act like they've got a passport! Don't forget we love buying people to use our passports!

But that's not all, you thought that was it? We all end the day by calling the banks to give us some free stocks while they jack the price up for expatriates. As we then get tucked into out lovely silk blankets which are hand woven by a million slaves, we send out a text to each other to agree to increase the rent by 100% the next day. After all, we're immune to the law, we don't pay bills, and everything is free for us. Ah what a lovely life.

Don't worry you're not being paranoid or generalizing at all :)

Now for the disclaimer: This is SARCASM. This is a JOKE. The reason for such a comment is because I think it's insane that so many people can generalize by the actions of few. Ah well, some probably laughed, some thought it was stupid, and some probably thought that everything I wrote above was true. *sighs*

neelu.. why do you say that most westerners go to Qatar for a better salary package?

I'm not sure that is true! Because if my husband and I were to set foot in Qatar it would be for less then 1/4 of what he currently earns here. And I am not talking about what he could potentially earn either!

However, to gain experience in a new, fresh and developing country is something that looks good on most CV's.

I've been living in Doha all my life and many years ago, i'll admit, i was guilty of thinking along some of the generalizations that Whoami mentioned in his original post.

I've met some Qatari people over the past few years and i must say they are some of the most dignified, respectful and honorable people i have ever met.

On the other hand, i was at a bar recently (no names) where the DJ that night was Arab (Qatari or not, i won't divulge, but its not important). I was standing next to an English girl who i didn't know and she says to her friend:

"Don't go over there and request a song, the DJ is an Arab!"

Now to my point, most of the people who in my experience generalize against Arabs and Qataris are English-fresh-off-the-boat expats. Not that it's their fault. Their media portrays Arabs as illiterate Camel humping scum.

Lol Alexa!!

I'm an expat who works outside the home but I also consider myself a house wife yet I am neither fillipino nor am I bored - so I am trying to figure out exactly where I fit in with the stereotypes that keep coming up in this thread.

I never said Lulu was bad for expats.  I said I had heard that many people who shop there have had a negative experience and that when I did finally go there, I thought it was decent with a large selection of items.

Also:

   *I don't suffer from a superiority complex

   * I did not come here because I couldn't make a decent living anywhere else.

    * I am not a fan of Walmart or any other US box/chain store.

*I could afford to buy groceries in the US but I would like to point out that I think groceries are more expensive here than in the US.

*I don't make a habit of complaining about much of anything - for the record I like Qatar, I like my job, I like my villa, I LOVE the friends I have made both expat and Qatari.

U r not harsh but offensive neelu. I do agree with you that lulu is the best place in doha to shop, clean and classy, and I also agree with u that qataris in general are decent and nice. But u don’t have to be so harsh to prove ur point. Be gentle neelu

Iam just trying to show some reason. I still stand by my statement about shopping in US. I mean places like walmart, Costco, publix and windixie. They look tired, dirty and cheap, any place like lulu or giant store in doha looks much more pleasant and well stocked. And u do have some service to talk about. I don’t mean places like wholefood or wild oats. If some one could afford regular grocery shopping in places like that, I assume there will be no need for them to leave US in the first places. I wonder why most westners here suffer from such a superiority complex. Most of them come here because they can’t make a decent living there. And once they r here they complain about local people , absence of beach parties .lack of gourmet food . What snobbery. I feel disgusted, thas why I sound so harsh at times. no hard feelings plzz

I also just recently stopped at one of the little, local markets that are spread out around the city and was impressed with the selection of items that the store had.  It is a very nice alternative when you just want to run out for a few basic things like milk and juice along with a few other things I didn't expect to find.  The fruit and vegtables look really good too.  So if anyone hasn't stopped by one of these little stores - I recommend it.  It is much better than fighting the people at the larger stores.

Making generalizations is treading on thin ice. Can't really win no matter how well you articulate yourself. At best you can only base things on fact. If you stand in ques and get cut off once or twice then this is life. I guess I hear people bring up this point and others because they see it happen more often than there accustom to. I think thats the point. We have all seen incidents of que dancing, children unbuckeled, issues of nanny verses parenting and tail gating. when you think about, if there is a word for something, such as tailgating, then obviously its happen before, in other countries and its been around longer than any of us. It has a name.

But again it comes back to the frequency. Anything mentioned in this thread eariler has happened in any country around the world, to everyone of else. Nothing has been said here, that someone is going, "oh my God I can't believe that, does that really happen". But it must be happening more often that it has drawen peoples attention to it. This thread has been repeated weekly for the last 2 years. Someone every week mentions something about driving or queing or nannies, blah, blah blah. Its because it happens at a higher frequency here. Not 100%, not even 50% of the time, but enough for it to draw numerous post and lenghty conversations about it.

In conclusion......I'm going to pack up my 6 kids and 2 nannies and head off to the mall, why not, its only 8:00 and if things go right I may hook up with the first Phillipino I see.....mmmmm ....good.

@andrew, i have no major comment. The whole point of this thread is to show that generalizing is stupid and ignorant.  As you said some are arrogant, some are super polite. You get all sorts, in ANY nationality.

As for Ques, my whole family lines up, I line up, my friends line up, if someone tried to beat the cue, I'd definately make a fuss.

So, if you want to generalize, go ahead, welcoome to the ignorant club.

Well about the swerving cars and not so much the foot out the window and talking on the mobiles, today was your day, I am sure you ensured that this went over the morning news, so many were swerving around and lane hopping this morning, I just wonder did the maids not get up in time to give them all breakfast,

However on my way home from work last Thursday I was driving behind an extremely aggressive western woman - I have never seen the likes and mind you a baby on board sign weaving in and out of the traffic as if she were alone on the street and swinging in back window dangering everyone in sight. Had I been able to take her number I would have posted it on QL. One other very aggressive young man (western of course)about 35 was roaming all over the street to on Thursday afternoon, however I did catch up with him and told him his driving was a proper disgrace and he wasn't even a match for Qataris he was just a plain sh****head

I've seen more tantrums of Qatari children... Many a  times I feel that they've been told right from childhood that everyone else apart from the localites need to be looked down upon and they have the right to ill treat any expatriate because they know that most of them do not have the ba##s to retaliate.

One of the recent instances was when I heard a qatari teen shouting at an asian man when he was pasing by with his wife for no reason whatsoever just to show off in front of his 2 other friends.

I'm really glad that that the post was enjoyed by many of you.

As everyone noticed, it's generalization that we need to stay away from.

If one person says something negative, we don't need to be negative back.

I admit, there have been a few times when I was in my car and a nationality decided to go from 80 - 20 in under a second for no reason and I said "Damn *insert any nationality here*" It's just a bit of venting to yourself.

It's a simple formula. Go tell a person "Your people are so kind and garcious". And that person will want to spread that image by his actions. Go tell a person "all your people are A$$holes" and that person will try to be an even bigger one to get back at the people who said it.

Let's make the most of life. If someone can't handle the good side, freedom, and progression, then ignore them. They're going to get left behind in life anyway. ^_^

Love it!

The stereotypes get promoted by everyone. I was told today by the bosses that some very high profile people(Qataris) were visiting today and that we might have to leave the kids in their classes, to move our cars so the VIPs could park.

it turned out that the VIPs came in one big bus!!! No chauffeur driven blacked out windowed cars to be seen!!!!!

Everyone is frightened by the locals, Ha HA

you did so confirm what I suspected about Qataris...If Alexa's is allowed to join, may I also??? Actually, if you take Alexa, you have to take jauntie and me, too....Talk about a great package deal!!...Been told I have the Arabic eyes...but would definitely have to cover the rest...as we all well know that Americans are terrorist targets, selfish, don't care about the rest of the world, arrogant,  elitist, racist, sit eat and watch tv all day long...hmmmm with the exception of the terrorist targets, sounds like I should fit in quite well with Qataris Secret club. (we'll work on jauntie, she's British..)

Thank you whoami. That is one of the few posts I've read on QL in the 18 months I've been here that has genuinely made me laugh out loud. But what makes it an even better piece is that as well as being funny it also manages to perfectly encapsulate the stupidity of us expats who generalise an entire country all the time. Genius.

when does "few" turn into many? How often must you see something for it not to be a generalization. 2 out of 10, 3,4,5.....when.....?

When one person calls one shallow, its absurbed to believe it has validity. Two people, strange ....three.... there jealous....four.....hmmmm...maybe I am shallow.....five, your shallow.

@bigdaddy, oh no! You told them tomorrows schedule! Now we'll have to randomly change it all! It's not like we're not used to chaos right?

(on a side note, it's usually the other side that says Touche not the replier :P)

@Alexa, alright, you're in! But only for a probation period! During that time, I'm sorry but you may be molested in our work place. Don't forget NOT to report it or call the police. Don't worry though, after your probation period is complete, you'll be deported anyway for no apparant reason :D (ok that may have been a bit too dark )

@PM, Oh my God! I don't know why but I tried to visualize you doing that.

Hahahaha funny... WhoAmI..  I let you in on a secret... have you visited the expats secret club lately? NO? oh but you should!  here i what we crap about

You boys wear dresses and look so cool and guess what? we envy you for you look so fresh and girly while we melt in our manly pants

you get to have 4 wives! while we have to put up with ONE and only one (officially that is...)

You drive left, right sideways in the middle lanes;  we ask and wonder where the heck you learnt to drive!

our driving is so constraint and boring compared to you racing men... hope you collect all radars' visiting cards!

while you're trying to work out all your mixed up nationalities we are buzily boozying with Irish, Scottish, Aussies, Pomies, Froggies, Wogs, blues eyes, red eyes, black eyes, just to name few oh I forgot cricket bashing...  We tend to forget about Qatari bashing and the rental increase you are about to wack on us tomorrow!

You see mate most of us think you are so abslavelutely sleek in your oily patch we just want to have a wink or two at you!  Cheers...

Me think Qataris are good people  want to visit our secret club?  WELCOME.

Now for the disclaimer: This is SARCASM. This is a JOKE. The reason for such a comment is because I think it's insane that so many people can generalize by the actions of few. Ah well, some probably laughed, some thought it was stupid, and some probably thought that everything I wrote above was true. *sighs*

.....were going to get in our car with our six children and make sure one is laying across the back window, one on dads lap and the other four watching mindless movies on the DVD player...

.......thats not all, when we crash into the car in front of us its obvious there fault, stupid drivers driving only 100....

.......ques... what are they, of course if you see a line to que for a resturant or to buy something, this means walk passed and get in before the simple people who ques.......silly white people they kill me.

......not done yet....family is our life. My child is everything, when I leave him for six weeks here, 2 months there, wake up 9:00 perhaps 11:00am, my baby knows I'd do anything for him. I'm still not sure why my little boys calls me, nanny.

Now for the disclaimer: This is SARCASM,  NOT. This is a JOKE, sadly NOT. The reason for such a comment is because I think it's insane that so many people can generalize by the actions of many. Ah well, some probably laughed, some thought it was stupid, and some probably thought that everything I wrote above was true, actually it was. *sighs*

that was one awesome post. And i am sorry that Qataris are percieved that way, while they really are not all that way. Like among any people, there may be rotten tomatoes. But i have never ever stood for generalising.

Like JoanT said, you are a scream, and what a good read... Maybe you should blog a bit. Your blog would be an instant hit!

Kudos, you did well!

Well, I'm going out to mingle with the Arabs, because being a Brit, I'm obviously rascist against South Asians!
