Best/worst holiday you've ever been on?

Torque
By Torque

Best for me, a wonderful trip to Greece years ago with son & ex-wife, stayed at an amazing resort called Grand Lagonissi, truly stunning place, fabulous weather, food & company of family & friends we went with.

Worst, Skegness years ago with school, never stopped raining, horrendous accomodation, smelly bodies that made Scouts camping in The Lake District positively fragrant by comparison....

What about you?! Any holidays from hell, or holidays in paradise?

When I read the opening to your post Fatcat I was reminded of a joke about someone being scared whilst doing something daredevilish like you did.

Someone says "Can you smell something strange?"

The answer was:

"Smell it? I'm sitting in it!"

Torque, scared? I almost didn't do it! It's on my FB, the link to the video is in one of the pictures.

Some friends of ours took a villa there and invited us to join them. It was a very nice holiday because we hadn't seen the friends for a few years and the villa was very luxurous and had a great view out over the sea.

We didn't see much of the island, but the Oozo went down a treat. Oh! and we bumped into George Best in a taverna where everyone was watching the World Cup. One of the other villa houseguests was a rather drunken Irishman. We didn't point out Best to him in case he went over and caused a scene.

His behaviour got us thrown out anyway and we had to find a new drinking/eating hole lol

Our friends had a rather unfortunate accident when, whilst sitting in huge lorry tyres being dragged by a speedboat, three of them all got thrown into the air at the same time and someone's shin bone connected to a head. Cricket ball sized bruised bump on shin and a few stitches required to a gashed face. Not fun.

No, only from the Zim side. The Zambian side is so small we thought it wasn't worth it.

But one of the best things I did at Zim was the Gorge Swing - 70m free fall and then a huge swing. Now that was amazing.

.., have never been before, but will be going with a crowd of 50+ so should be a guaranteed hoot.

A very close married couple met there 4 years ago, this is their 3rd wedding anniversary so a big party, then the crowd goes leaving just the 4 of us to enjoy.

They know the island like the back of their hands having both lived there, they even have relatives living there.

Really looking forward to this holiday!

Had a wonderful time in Sun City South Africa earlier this year, didn't spent any time in the Casino's, not my kind of thing, but loved the hotel (Palace of the lost City or similar..) & the safari.

Also on my facebook a brill week I had with friends on a 54' motor-yacht in the Med, just one bay round from Monaco, was awesome for 3 'lads' on their own....;-)

Worst holiday was one to Rio de Janeiro that I tried organizing over the internet: rented a flat that was advertised on the classifieds, paid and when I got there, oh my! It felt like the last time the flat had been cleaned was six months before the old lady died in there! And brave me told hubby: "It's not that bad" (rule number, never admit you're wrong!). Less than half an hour later, I was knocking at the owner's door trying to recoup some of the money I had paid. Now this guy looked like he was a retarded serial killer. And this is Rio de Janeiro, not one of the safest places in the world. Anyway, a few minutes later, at 3am, we were getting a cab to get the hell out of Rio. It turned out ok, though, the cab driver took us to a clean hotel and we had an amazing time: New Year's in Rio is truly magical.

Best holidays:

Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe - Safari Lodge)

Kumarakom (India - Coconut Lagoon)

Cape Town (South Africa)

Kruger National Park in South Africa

Porto Seguro (Brazil)

Ubatuba (Brazil)

Hard to compare places and experiences as each one is unique. But Zurich in autumn - cruising the lake by boat sipping a nice drink and watching the never ending yellow golden brown color of leaves falling...having a cheese pie in one of the village where Rapunzel and Gretel cottage was.. simply unforgettable.

Hanoi - Vietnam , staying at the SOFITEL PLAZA - Westlake side having morning coffee with sunrise and the and cocktail at sunset in the lounge both with the amazing view of the lake.

Summer in Malta - with all the Village festival and traditional fair..a glimpse of the past in the midst of modern technology. Amazing contrast - very festive and even for us local, it feels like a holiday.

Worst - none really...some discomfort but part of experienced.

Worst, vietnam very rude people in the tourist industry. Was on a boat tour and the guide asked me why I was so fat, of course my size by their standard is fat but not here in north america, thats why I wasn't surprised when he asked me this but when I answered him I am just a big girl! he jumped in before i could get another word in and told me I was fat because I was lazy and didn't like to work. however when I did get a word in I politely let him know that my trip wasn't free..

Best, Nanning, China I was sitting at the train station reading a book minding my own business not aware of what was going on around me! when I looked up there were about twenty five really good looking chinese men standing around me! my first thought was wow! I am so beautiful and I have a choice of twenty five guys! But naw, they were only interested the pictures in the book I was looking at.

I am always excited to go to sleep! In anticipation of the new experience I will find awaiting me.

everywhere changes once people start flocking there!!! As you can see I have a penchant for ISLANDS. ;-)

Btw, I took my then baby daughter to Bali four years ago, and it was better than I'd remembered it from trips there in the early '80s (when I used to live in Perth). The bombings had kept the tourists away out of fear. We found the locals so welcoming we ended up in 5* hotels for $20 a night (which I'd budgeted for losman!). I do hope the tourists have started returning ...the Balinese desperately needed the trade.

I went on my first solo trip to Corfu! The Greek owners had a small son and toddler daughter, and when I returned more recently the lad was proud to be the Head Waiter and the girl is now the Receptionist! When I returned I'd been trekking around Southern Greece and islands then travelled by bus across the Corinth Canal to the coast and a ferry to Corfu (took a couple of months). My daughter came with me, aged three at the time (she actually travelled with me to four continents before she turned two but sadly can't remember anything!). At least I took advantage of the cheap airfares for her (now it costs an arm and a leg to go anywhere!) LOL.

20 years later and even saw the sparkling fireflies again (in May). It was good enough for Gerald Durrell (the famous animal conservationist from my little island, Jersey, Channel Islands)!! Having lived in many different countries and used each as a "hub" to explore both tourist and remote places, I'd say there are pros and cons of both.

I travelled around India for three months and en route flew from Trivandrum to Male and took pot luck on which resorts were available. I stayed at Taj resorts first in the South Atoll and then in the North. As a solo traveller I had a lot of fun in the Maldives, but it was so romantic it would have been nicer with a partner...

Alexa, i always heard Maldives is expensive. Me think a beach is a beach, everywhere is the same. So we usually always head down to the east like Thailand or Bali for holiday with spas.

Even here in Doha i tried massage few times in posh hotels, but i am not too impressed with their treatment.

Rather go back to Phi Phi Island or Tioman or Bali then lol.

Top Tips for Russian chicks on holiday

1. Orange and gold versace bath towels are not considered tasteful

2. 6 inch spikey hooker heels arent the best footware for walking on sand

3. When you put on a new top...consider wearing a skirt or trousers too.

4. Hoisting your g string above your trousers is not subtle

5. 5 inch nails with diamantes are not the height of elegance

6. you dont have to straddle your boyfriend when putting sun tan oil on him

7. if you want to show off your new 36E plastic baps on the beach... just know that the scars around them put me right off my cornetto

8. Glitter make up and bright red lipstick on your collagen lips at 9am isnt de rigeur morning attire

9. if you want to go sight seeing and insist on wearing a micro mini skirt...please consider wearing a pair of knicker esp if you are climbing up things (the castle walls at Montenegro are now a scar in my mind)

10. When your friend is taking a photo of you - a soft porn pose is not necessary...esp in front of a war monument.

11. It isnt cumpolsory to wear a see thru top and a bra a totally different colour.

12. if you dye your hair a radically different colour...dont forget the eyebrows!

Please note I am not jealous of your no neck boyfriend, all his bling and his face like a bulldog who just swallowed a wasp....

Actually ignore all the tips (apart from 9) I find you hysterical

We bought a package from a local agent in Singapore. Ended up in half ruin hotel ... thick dust under our bed. The hotel in the middle of nowhere ... Swimming pool very dirty ...

Cant really find a best holiday, too many of them. We stayed in Berjaya Resort in Tioman Island (with Monkey and monitor lizzard roaming around freely outside your chalet), Holiday Inn Phi Phi Island, ShangriLa Hotel Singapore in Orchard Road (always coming back there every year), ShangriLa Golden Sands in Penang, Movenpick Dead Sea in Jordan, Hard Rock Hotel Bali and the list go on ...
