Veggies and Ramadan?!

FranElizabeth
By FranElizabeth

Hey- any Veggies out there who can give me advice on whether - and where - I can buy a lorry load of Quorn?? Don't want to sound like a typical tree hugging Pom but I've gone off eggs since none of them have 'Free Range' tattooed on them and I'm struggling!
Please help before I disappear- I need energy:)
Cheers, FE :)

Yes, I am partial to a nice piece of Persilles de Tignes on an oatcake.

Megamart is a western ex-pats best friend. Just make sure your bank manager knows before you go. You always spend 10x more than you planned to. QR28 for a box of Shreddies?!?!?!

Plus they always have a selection of mature cheddar cheese as well. Cheese should indeed be looked forward to. I look forward to it for breakfast, then for lunch, then for dinner.

I find chickpeas can provide that 'bite' your looking for. Chuck them in with anything. I personally like to roast them with cumin seeds and a squeeze of lemon.

Thank me? What for? I haven't said anything yet :D

Ah, a fellow veggie.

Megamart will become your best friend. It's at the Centre near Ramada Hotel. I think there is a plan to open a bigger Megamart on Salwa Road near Qatar Deco R/A.

Also try Q-Mart at The Mall on D ring road. They stock different kinds of tofu.

What about different kinds of legumes? Black eye beans/kidnay beans, etc...

Diamond:) Thank you. It's my mission to find it next time I'm in. Heading in on furniture scouting mission this week but figure the sofa can wait. Lol. Thanks a million. See you soon:)

Vegas.. how DO you spend Ramadan? ;)

In The Centre, right near Ramada. There used to be a huge one at Landmark that had everything from UK possible but it closed in January. Not ashamed to say I shed a tear! Anyway, MegaMart has loads of Waitrose own brand, Walkers crisps etc. It is expensive but worth it for the things you can't live without. Especially free range eggs. like you I would rather pay 50p per egg than buy battery.

Bocca vege burgers with cheesy bits are fab! Look out for them

I consider myself reprimanded:)

Jauntie- it's not the vegetables I have an issue with.. love them too and I CAN cook- it is the need for something to get my teeth into:) (I'm starting to feel like I'm going to join Drac's gang;)

Tallg- whereas I would agree that cheese RULES and thank crikey that you didn't let me go down that heinous mind set for too long by pulling me up on it (phew). It would be kind of like you eating the same meat for every meal I guess? Cheese should be looked forward to and eaten with smugness:))

Jasmine- I think I love you:) Where abouts is MegaMart? I'm there!

Mr P- I come from rural Wales so well used to this argument. No issues with anyone else eating meat so long as it's raised and killed humanely. Just that I'd rather not, if it's all the same;)

lots of nice veggie dishes to make with couscous - yummy. Just cook up a few interesting vegetables, toss it about a bit, chuck toasted pine nuts over it and voila!

Ratattouie is good too - bit of feta on it, lump of garlic bread, and away you go!

Big thick minestrone soup (using veg stock of course, rather than a ham bone) with haricot beans.

Good heavens Fran, where's your imagination. I'm not even a veggie yet I cook loads of vegetarian meals.

MegaMart always has some quorn products just rarely the mince. Also Linda McCartney sausages most of the time. Expensive though. You can also buy Waitrose or Duchy of Cornwall free range eggs from UK there. 22QR for half a dozen. Also the Bocca range of burgers sausages etc, I think that's American. Very nice, especially the ground mince but they hardly ever have that.

"Cheese gets a little boring though"

I don't understand. How can cheese get boring. It's the greatest food on earth. Adding cheese to anything makes it instantly more delicious. Lack of meat has clearly affected you.

Thanks for that. I did a mega shop in Giant Stores and came up with some veggie spring rolls and some frozen pizzas so I won't starve anyway. Cheese gets a little boring though:)

I must be the fussiest eater in Qatar but I find it hard to even drink the milk here as I see the way they treat the other animals. Not a tree hugger just squeamish! Saw a goat in an open backed van going at about 140km on the Dukhan/ Doha road... it was having a good munch on some straw, mind:)

Also quite disturbed by the tortured yowls of the starving cats at 3am outside the villa:( Oh and the plumber arriving at 8am on Sat mornings... but that's another story. Lol. Do these people not SLEEP?! :)

Hi Fran.

Read your thread earlier today but didn't know the answer, but by coincidence I went for dinner at a friend's tonight where we had Quorn. She got it from Megamart, but apparently they don't have it all the time (as with many things).

I'm pretty sure I bought some "freerange" eggs from my corner shop here in Doha...yolks were deep orange and full of flavour. I'll check next time and let you know the source if so!

FranElizabeth - Veggies out here don't survive on Quorn. When they eat out they eat at one of the many Veggy restos in Doha. And, AFAIK none of them have Quorn on their menus. Try GMC in City Centre Mall. I haven't seen Quorn there but they might have something similar.

PS: Semolina based breakfast dishes are a major part of the Indian Veggie menu. Try some of the restaurants here.

"heading to Doha"?.. and where are you now, FE?

By FranElizabeth• 11 Sep 2008 23:33

I am seriously in need of some protein though!! Hate lentils, gone off eggs.. don't really want to exist off cheese but heading to Doha to buy a toastie maker this weekend!!

Food here was awesome for Veggies til Ramadan hit and now I'm mainly faced with the cabbage stuff that Dinner Ladies throw out when they've punished the kids into cabbage starvation/ good behaviour submission.

They even do Semolina (sp?) and I haven't been subjected to that for years!! None of this would be so hard if everyone else was having a truly rubbish time too. Most of them are loving their meat based dinner times. This is good. (Apart from when I get compulsions to stab them with my blunt knife over my rice and ketchup:))
