The new rent laws are great on paper, it is pro-tenant. But the issue here is how much of it is enforced and whether the landlord is penalised or just let off each time when the issue comes to court.

I hope the labour laws also move forward from the primitive slave trade fashion to more of 21st century regulations which help the expatriates choose the best available job.

If you permit landlords to get away with increasing your rent more than permitted, then it is going to happen!

They can't kick you out of your home unless you are in default of payment or other provisions within the lease. If at renewal, they ask for a rent higher than what is permitted by law, you can refuse and take the matter to the relevant department. A couple of them do speak English and will assist if you give them the back up data.

Don't just give in....this gives a landlord carte blanche to disrepect the tenancy law which has been re-written for the benefit of tenants.

Last February, but it is meaningless. There are supposed to be rental bands with specific % based increases permitted, but you will be lucky if they observe. The Govt set up a department to assist and enforce, but you'll be lucky - they don't speak english and work odd hours. Do a search for details.
