How did we survive during 70s 80s n 90s

How did one survive growing up in the 70's, 80's and 90's?

We had no seatbelts, no airbags and sitting in the back of a truck was a treat…

Our baby prams had the most gorgeous lead based colours…
No such thing as tamper proof bottle tops…

Opening kitchen cupboards was a breeze… as safety locks were unheard off…

Cycling was like a breath of fresh air…

No safety helmets, knee pads or elbow pads, with plenty of cardboards between spokes to make it sound like a motorbike…
When thirsty we only drank tap water, bottled water was still a mystery…
We kept busy collecting bits & pieces so we could build all sort of things … and we were fearless on our bikes even when the brakes failed going downhill…
We were showing off how tough we are, by how high we could climb trees & then jumping down….It was great fun….
We could stay out to play for hours, as long as we got back before dark, in time for dinner…
We walked to school, or sometimes we even rode our bike.
We had no mobile phones, but we always managed to find each other…. How? No one knows…
We lost teeth, broke arms & legs, we got cuts and bruises and bloody noses…. nobody complained as we had so much fun, it wasn't anybody's fault, only ours
We ate everything in sight, cakes, bread, chocolate, ice-cream, sweet sugary drinks, yet, we stayed skinny by fooling around.
And if one of us was lucky to find a 1 litre coca cola bottle we all had a swag from it & guess what? Nobody picked up any germs...
We did not have Play Stations, MP3, Nintendo's, I-Pods, Video games, 99 Cable TV channels, DVD's, Home Cinema, Mobile phones, Home Computers, Laptops, Chat-rooms, Internet, etc ... BUT, we had REAL FRIENDS!!!!
We called on friends to come out to play, never rang the doorbell, just went around the back…
We loved being let loose in the big bad world…without bodyguards…
We played with sticks and stones, played cowboys and Indians, doctors and nurses, hide and seek, soccer games, over and over again…
When we failed our exams we were given a second chance by simply repeating the same grade…without visiting psychiatrists, psychologists or counselors…

Such were the days… We had freedom, success, disappointments and responsibilities. ..

Most of all, we learned to respect others…

Mandilulur - in 1970's Sigapore sent scollers to Sri Lanka to learn uncer "Colombo Plan". Few Singapore Minister today were some of the benifisheries on that plan.

That was the standard of Education at that time.

Now gone with the wind :(

I'm not convinced about the "ample" part, Charan. In 1960 in the US only 5% of medical students were women. Today it is 49%.

girls couldn't grow up to be doctors or engineers;

Ample even in the 1960's

childhood leukemia was a death sentence;

Agree

child sexual abuse wasn't talked about or believed;

He would have been killed if found

down syndrome children were always institutionalized.

Never until todate. They were taken care of the entire family

That is in my country.

Not to be a party pooper, but I remember those days when:

girls couldn't grow up to be doctors or engineers;

childhood leukemia was a death sentence;

child sexual abuse wasn't talked about or believed;

down syndrome children were always institutionalized.

If we don't remember the bad with the good - and it WAS good, too - we indulge in a false nostalgia.

"Every party need a pooper, that's why we invited you."

Agree with you on those points.. However, in other aspects the PC Brigade have spoilt things also.. We used to climb trees, go on cross country runs etc etc.. Nowadays, the health and safety and other such have made these things just about impossible..

als boy .. you said it dude.. and to add right from the childhood. No PSPs . PS3s .. we kids use to play in the field untill sunset when the moms use to comeout and threaten us to get back home and shower. It had big deal in keeping us fit.. look at the kids now.. one of the two are fatty, they cant run , they cant play , they cant be in the sun.

Alexa mentioned tht today's age is easier... But i hope u know tht wit todays technology & also all those gadgets hav made us very lazy...!!! 4 example, bac n de 70's - 90's... People actually took out der dogs 4 walkin so in a way gettin exercise for demselves as well as de dog, but now-a-days, u can actually get dos e-dogs online and Gosh... wot all u can do wit dem on click of a button... (P.s: I know der r sum of u out der who still walk ur dogs, dis wasn't meant 4 dem). Today, every is fatter, lazier & closed... bac in de 70's-90's... it was healthier, active & open... (When i mentioned open, meant more life-span and also healthy living)

Miss those days... seriously...!!!

Superb,, with the arches and rostyle wheels, special grille and steering wheel..

Funny story..

One of the girls at work (1978) passed her test and was excited about going out and buying a car..

Next day she came in beaming.. We asked her which car she'd bought. She said that she disn't know the model , but it was black and really nice inside..

Turned out to be a Mini 1275 Gt with light tints, leather interior and wooden dash..

Vimmin..... You got to love them..

seventies and Eightees were great decades..

We were more carefree.. Less materialistic. More open to criticism, yet willing to voice our opinions and disuss issues.

There was hardly any "political correctness" and we voiced opinions without fear of being labeled racist, sexist etc..

Never worried about designer clothes or walking home late night alone.

I recall going on marches against apartheid and nuclear weapons. Took buses and was happy with a crappy ford cortina.

Good old days..
