Single Girl Contemplating Doha
Hi
I am a single female, London Irish, 27 next week, and am seriously contemplating a job offer in Doha – just a couple of questions I hope you can help with
1) Is there a night life? I don’t want to be partying every night but would like the option at the weekend, even if it’s a bar ??
2) Is the social scene quite married / family orientated –dont want to feel like the single lemon if it’s a family culture, but don’t want to go to sleezy single nights either lol
3) I don’t drive ,are cabs quite assessable and how expensive are they??
Thanks!

Hi, there are bars here and if you're with someone you'll be ok - wouldn't suggest going on your own just because I wouldn't want to and i'm here in Doha, been here for about 5 months now, and single.
But its a nice enough place, would recommend you get a car and drive here though, my first two weeks were awful and I put that down to being without a motor and not able to easily get myself out/about.
All the best.
Nightlife - Yes though not the best and expensive.
Social Scene - Exists thoguht again not in the same way that it does in the UK. You will easily meet up with new friends who will accommodate young ladies like yourself. Lots fo families but that should not put you off.
Getting around Doha - This could be your problem prices are slowly going up and actually arrangign a taxi that turns up on time is becoming almost impossible.
Some people enjoy Doha some dont it's what YOU make of the place. If you sit on your a** and expect things to happen then it wont, you need to get out there and get involved.
I hope your future position pays good money and provides accommodation as these are all required to live a certain lifestyle out here.
Good luck what ever your decision is.
hay i am single too we can hang out anytime if u r interested
tc
1. I dont quite agree wit de ratio... its more like 100:1 (Marking 100 and males & 1 as female) U can c de difference wit all de answers here itself. Oh, abt ur point, yup der r couple of neat places tht u can certainly hang out... List:
a. Irish harp
b. Aussie Legend Bar
c. Bubbles
d. Library
e. Pearl
f. Paloma
(list just goes on... Just tht de only difference is tht u wudnt find any indepent bar out here in Qatar, each hotels have one and sum hav up2 3)
2. Due to de current uplifting of Qatar, der has been loads of malls opened up 4 shopping and window shoppin pleasures wit a coffee shop opened up at every corner. (So, der is much of singles life too present apart from havin a fmialy here)
3. By de time u did hav ur way or get fimilar with Qatar roads, u wud certainly end up havin a drivin linc and certainly own a car within a years time from when u plan 2 get down here, since... well, de picture of havin a cab drive always wudnt b much of a site and more over, gettin around Qatar is kinda quite easy :)
Hav a pleasant stay... Welcome aboard Qatar...!!!
... with a driving license. Be it a guy, girl, whatever. I used to run around a nice Kiwi lady. Nothing sexual, just good friends. I appreciated her company, she appreciated my car :o)
Did you Google it first?
In my view this is much better that any other gulf countries.
Dubai is overcrowded and god only knows where its gonna stop.
Bahrain is too good , yet too small
Kuwait and Saudi is out of question.
Oman is OK . Qatar too is just about ok
I am a male brit and have been here for a few years. The bars are what you make of them and I know from spending endless saturdays in them!!! There are a wide varity from drunk sleace to a quiet Pimms on the balconey! For westerners there is a large 'villa party scene' where we socialise, keeps the riff raff out! If you need contacts when you get here let me know! Dont listen to a lot of these people as I dont believe any are TRUE Brits.... and lets not forget the tax free income!!!
The Irish Bar does St Patricks.
Groceries are expensive, but I believe they are in the UK these days as well. I imagine our weekly shop would cost the same in the UK as it does here.
Thanks everyone!
3 - 4 guys hitting on you at once - Think I may need to invest in some pepper spray!! just kidding!
OK so book cabs in advance - Hire a private driver for the office trip ( would love that lol)
And make friends to go out with!
Oh and another bigge - does Doha " do" St Patricks day ??
Also ( sorry) how does cost of grocerys etc compare with UK/US ??
THANKS! = )
You'll get on fine here, as long as you're prepared to go out and about to find stuff to do. If you sit on your arse waiting for people to come to you then you'll get bored.
As for taxis, I've never had a problem getting one. You just have to plan ahead a bit.
Dont expect anything like London..There are clubs in the Hotels...they are mostly crowded during weekends...if are with the right people socializing is not a problem.
Mostly family oriented culture.. but its not that difficult to get single friends as there are many expats landing in Doha everyday.
If you dont drive it’s a bit difficult to commute… because public transport is not reliable. Cabs are not very expensive but its difficult to get cabs. You can arrange private Taxis for a reasonable charge for your daily run....to office and back home. But it should be arranged through someone trusted person.
Nothing to worry there are many single brits here.
Note: please stay away from Smoke and Ksarat two Romeos of Qatar Living..LOL oopz forgot to add Charanmafiriyal..'not to be trusted'... LOL
with the advice to get a driving license and a car asap. Doha is not the place for a beginning driver. The traffic is terrible and with people coming from all over the world, the driving is insane and what rules they have are not enforced. Add in the roundabouts and all the road construction and you begin to see the problem. Driving would be very dangerous (and stressful!) for a beginner here.
There is night life here .... and depend where you live you can get anything close to you ...I have many Brits single girl friend ...not that many but I have a couple ... and also QL social group have couple single girl that can help you around to answer your question ... depend what you looking for ....definitely people help you if you ask them nicely ..of course you will find people will help y opu with wrong reason ...but then again you can find those people everywhere anyway ...so if you think you want to take the job ,...just experience the good part of Doha ...... there will be always not fun part everywhere you go right ???

Hi Orlah! Glad to hear that u're thinking of coming to Qatar! As to your questions - there's plenty to do over here in the evenings. it's a lot less crazy than london is in terms of clubbing, but u'll certainly find things to do. Unfortunately Qatar works on the "spreading things by word of mouth" way, so you might not find things to do initially - all you need to do is keep u;re ears perked up.. There are several amateur dramatics societies and music groups aroudn if u're into that kinda thing (I hear there's also an irish dancing group...)
There are also plenty of singles here (like me! :-P) so you won't feel left out at all - whilst it's great place becuase it's much safer here than elsewhere (I lived in England several years, and here u can at least worry much less about getting mugged or maimed), there are a lot of singles out and about so it's good...Just pick ur places or u'll find lots of bachelors staring at you :-S
One final piece of advice - try and get a driving licence and car asap - Karwa is TERRIBLE (and that's putting it politely)...If u use public transport (don't use buses as predominantly men seem to use that, might make u feel uncomfortable) then it becomes a bit of a saga trying to negotiate getting a taxi and going out bla bla bla....there are several private taxi firms (Fox is pretty good, always come on time too), so if u can possibly help it DON'T USE KARWA (they seem to have trouble controlling their drivers, who've ended up crashing, thieving bla bla bla)...
right now i've carped on more than enough but hope that helps!

Like me :))))))))))

smoke - don't scare her. leave her to me. I will take care of all her needs :)
Ban Spoon Feeding not Me
OMG you said the magic word SINGLE, but are u good looking too? that is the more important thing for me to know :p ok so before i start to stalk u in qatar
1) night life sucks UNLESS your out with some fun people, better make some really good friends before u venture out into the clubs by yourself. dont think u'll just walk into a bar and meet "nice" people. If your pretty or not be prepared to get hit on may be 3 or 4 guys at the same time, they'll make u feel so special ;)
2)well there are a lot of single dingles out here, and then there are those who are married but like to pretend to be single dingles too so beware. Yes it is more family orientated but life for singles is there too just dont expect too much outta it freedom of expression is limited and no hanky panky stuff
3)Cabs are pretty much expensive but then there are buses too. and if you do a search on Ql you will know more about why we prefer riding camels than wait for a cab :)
they are adding more cabs on the streets but u dont always get one when u want.
PS: this message is for KSA...stay away from this one i saw her first lol

1. Yes there is a night life. No problem there.
2. Lots of singles (especially men, the ratio is about 7 men per every 1 female). Be aware that the men tend to be aggressive here. I guess it's because of the competition for the girls.
3. Cabs are not that acccessible. They are around, but at peak times are not available unless you have booked 24 hours in advance. Not that expensive, but if it is to be your main form of transportation, it will add up. An alternative is to look into hiring a driver. These are very common here. They are available on a full time basis (around 2000QR a month) or a part-time basis.
