Rydges Plaza hotel to close in December

This has been rumoured for years. Is it finally going to happen?

RYDGES Plaza hotel is scheduled to close on December 1, just six years after it was built.

Though no hotel official was willing to talk about the hotel’s fate, a source confirmed that it would not receive any guests in December.

The hotel, run by the Australian Rydges Group, was informally opened on December 15, 2002. It is owned by FBQHC of Sheikh Faisal bin Qassem al-Thani.

A hotel source could not say what might happen to the 11-storey building that stands in the al-Bida area, overlooking the Doha Bay and the Corniche. However, the source said the building “is being taken over by the ministry (of interior)”.

Ever since the 138-room building was built, speculation was rife in the city that the hotel would never be opened because of its sensitive location next to the Emiri Palace. But, it did open and survived the demolitions that razed all the surrounding buildings, which housed hundreds of residents.

However, speculation of the demolition resurfaced from time to time.

The source could not say whether the four-star hotel would be reopened at another location. But, moves are underway to find a new building, it is learnt.

The Rydges Plaza is a hotel group that was launched in 1988 and currently has more than 30 properties in various countries, including the UAE. A hotel official has said it is looking to expand its presence in the Middle East.

about three years ago the staff had a meeting with the GM that it iwas going to close in Dec 06. This time it actually seems to be happening.

The locals that go the Mid level bar will probably be on the 1st floor in the ramada.

Sammaz: One of the big issues is that the hotel are not going to give them NOC's. They are keeping hold of them because there will allegedly be a new rydges opening in March. They said they would keep paying them or find them temporary positions till March, but none of which was in Writting Naturally. I could name several of them that are very good loyal employees. But with out that piece of paper (NOC) nothing can be done for them.

Cool, that hotel never was my favorite cup of tea... I'll drink a glass of wine for their closure.

was too smoky and horrendously noisy!! Had they put in decent exhaust system and toned the music down to something other than eardrum piercing....it would have been wonderful!

Will miss it as a landmark tho..

It was one of the few licenced places with open air so I could hang out with smoking friends and not feel like I wanted to wretch when I smelt my clothes in the morning.

Yes it is true. When Shkh. Faisal Al Thani got the approval he signed a no objection letter that when the Government wanted the land, he would accept the decision.

If I am not mistaken, the land will be used for the Parliaments building.
