Moving to qatar, being blond
Hi, I am from the U.S. and currently live in Florida. I will be moving to Qatar in Jan 2009. I have a sort of ridiculous question....basically my family is trying to convince me to dye my hair darker before moving there. I am 26 yrs old and very blond, am I going to stand out in a negative way? Is this something I should even worry about? I am a graduate student in counseling and will be looking for an internship while there, if anyone has any advice. Also, does anyone have any knowledge about opportunities for teaching English as a foreign language in Qatar as I am currently getting certification to teach?
being blond is very hot ,and u r very luky to be blond caz u r hot

Locals eat blondes as light meat is less fattening :)
Just teasing... you will only get negative attention here if you are dressed innapropriatly or behave as such, which would get you negative attention just about anywhere in the world. No worries here in Qatar, Doha is a very modern city, and some arab women are indeed blond (not Qataris but some of the Palestinian, Syrian and Lebanese are natural blondes and redheads). _____________________________________________________

Don't change what or who you are? If society does not like it.....tough....its their problem.
What I don't undertand is......why do you think that if you are blond you might stand out in a negative way?
What is this "negative way"?
no need to color ur hair , it's safe here, there is a lot of blond women here. it's easy to find job in doha, you will love it,
welcome to Doha, Bueatiful Blonde ;)
enjoy and have fun in Doha

Feminine is "blonde" and masculine is "blond".

Depends what you mean by "negative way" ?
Do blondes stand out in the USA ?
I'm blonde and have had no problems .. Lots of proposals, but no problems..
You are "legally Blonde"....dont worry welcome to qatar
I always feel kind of sad and down when I colour my hair darker (usually in the winter). Stay blonde, and hope you find a good colourist who can maintain what you have.

To avoid being too conspicuous you must dye your hair green or pink which is the usual norm here.
Probably an assest..

Q: How can you tell if a blonde's been using the computer?
A: There's whiteout on the screen.
hope you are not blue eyed. Camels, desert, blue eyed blonde
I agree, this may be the "stupidest thread of the month" but very entertaining, thank you for all your responses. The question was based on my father's old fashioned thinking and your answers have certainly helped me win that argument. I just want to be respectful of the people and culture I am entering and I look forward to the experience. Thank you again....
C'mon, she herself said it was ridiculous! And who among us hasn't had a relative or friend back home say something totally off the wall about Qatar. We only know better because we're here.
Mandi
lol Vegas...
Ouch Vegas. But yeah, wherrrre do people get these ideas????
You can't teach experience...
there are alot of blonde Arab women......
The more the merrier.....come fastttttttt.....
From one blonde to another, welcome! I probably felt more conspicuous in Miami. And there's lots of ESL opportunities.
Mandi
never.. do not worry they are not eating the blonds :)
I am a national , i never thought that people look at qatar in that way . come on ,we are not living in the dark ages anymore . Dont worry about dying your hair darker just leave it the way it is .
I heard the same thing so I let my hair go a bit darker before I got here... But I hated it so highlighted it while I was here. It doesn't matter at all. Some places you will stand out no matter what your hair color is. Keep it how you like it and you will be more confident in those situations where you do stand out.
As for teaching, there are tons of opportunities...
blonde hair so not a problem here...now i am a redhead with freckles...that is a fascination...i get asked why i have so many freckles - a LOT!
SO WHY WORRY?
SO WHY WORRY???
balds are even welcome here !!!
keep that hair blonde... that will merit you to a good job offer...:D
I think you shouldn't worry much about that. There are many expats who are blonde, black & even bald. It doesnt 've much significance here.I think Keeping blonde 'll make you more attractive among the very usual crowd. | suggest you go ahead with blonde. If you got a lisence to teach english, you gonna have a strong money purse. There are good number of chances for those who are trained in teaching English. For which company you are going to get recruited?
Good luck for your new venture
Good day
It seems like half of Shell's expats are beautifully blonde :o)
Shouldn't be any problem being blond here, they don't discriminate on hair colour and there are plenty of other Western ex-pats here.
Qatar is only moderately conservative, no mini-skirts etc in public. If you do stand out you may find you get a lot of propositions.
Lots of people teach English, either at the English schools or in private tuition to local children. Hope you have your visa's and stuff sorted, you can't stay for longer than 2 months as a tourist.
Come over and enjoy yourself.
