Thai Cooking Demo by Thai Ambassador's Wife
Last Sunday I was very fortunate to be invited by the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to his new residents for Thai Cooking demonstration. It is located few hundred metres away from the new British Embassy in West By.
The invite was at 10.30am … after asking around what is appropriate gift to bring for the Ambassador’s wife I decided to swing by at the florist at Villagio and get a bouquet of purple orchids.
I arrived at 10.20am, there were no cars in front of the door. I wasn’t sure if I got the date right (just like my previous experience with the other Thai Embassy’s event). I am a bit worry if I turn up at the door and become unexpected guest. I came out from the car and walk towards the house, there was a gentleman who greeted me and said that I am being expected. He opened the door for me.
Inside the house, I met Mrs.Chirapant. Although we have met several times before, this is the first time that I am actually able to have a proper conversation with her. She comes across to me as a very humble and down to earth lady. She introduced me to her second lady call Bam. I later learnt to address her as Phi Bam. I also met few other Ambassador’s wives (Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan and India), apart of that there was a Japanese lady who said that she recognize me from attending recitals around Doha.
First demonstration was making tofu, the Brunei’s Ambassador’s wife doing the demonstration for this. We practice the recipes from Korean’s Ambassador’s wife. Although I am hopeless when it comes into cooking, I did find it interesting when they discuss the different methods of tofu making, such as hard or soft tofu, or what they call tofu in other countries, what type of dishes using tofu as ingredients and so on.
Next Mrs.Chirapant showed us how to make Pad Thai, or Thai stir fry noodle, then how to cook the noodle.
Pad Thai a dish of stir-fried rice noodles with eggs, tamarind juice, red chilli pepper, plus any combination of bean sprouts, shrimp, chicken, or tofu, garnished with crushed peanuts and coriander. It is normally served with a piece of lime, the juice of which can be added along with Thai condiments. In Thailand, it is also served with a piece of banana flower.
After that she showed how to make papaya salad or Som Tam. If there had to be one national dish of Thailand, this spicy papaya salad would certainly be one of the favourite choices.
Once we finish the thai cooking demonstration, we were treated with thai lunch. We had Pad Thai, Som Tam, Tom Yam Soup and Thai Green Curry that was prepared earlier by the resident Chef. And of course a selection of thai dessert.
I love Thai Food, and this home cooking was the best, how I envy Mr.Chirapant. If he ever tires of representing his country, he could always help out his wife open up a restaurant.
Like any other mums or wives … at about 12.30 noon all the Ambassador’s wives start leaving the place one by one for school pick up. As myself have to collect my son from the school too, I excuse myself to Mrs.Chirapant to say good bye. Typical Asian hospitality … she even gave me a doggy bag to take home. Hubby was really pleased.
If any of you wants to try the food, I attached the recipes courtesy of Mrs.Chirapant. You guys can try it if you fancy Thai food.
A link to a class that is only in Thailand!
The pad thai sounds wonderful, I am going to try thai again. I shy away from asian rest. cause of my allergy to shellfish(near fatal experience was hard won). If we get to Q., I hope to learn a lot of new things in the kitchen, I LOVE cooking.

Nah, we went to a little one called Asia Scenic Thai Cooking. Just 6 of us in the group. We chose a recipe each, went to the market to buy the ingredients, then spent the day cooking all 6 recipes and eating them!
I highly recommend them if anyone's in Chiang Mai.
who.am.i do you eat spicy food?
Jang929, what is this GAP cooking school? You think that cooking class can change my interest in cooking ? :-)
Tallg, were you at GAP cooking school too???!!! The instructors were sooooo funny!!! Everybody who visits Chiang Mai should attend class there =)))
wow! that's mouth-watering! :))
cheers,
paul
yes Charan, ate the real Som Tam and Tom Yam Goong. Som Tam prepared by Mrs. Chirapant herself, and then by the resident chef on the bigger portion.
Tough question, cos I'll pretty much eat anything (as long as it doesn't have mushrooms in)!
If I had to pick one though I'd probably go for Italian. It's not just their food I love, but also their whole attitude towards food & eating in general.
So get the Chance to eat real "Tom Yam Gung" and "Som Thaam"
Ban Spoon Feeding not Me
so tallg, what is your favourite thai food?
tallg , my thai friends gave me a thai cooking book ... and it sat under the table gathering dust ! :P
I really need to make an effort to cook ...
You know, you're right Novi - I do get a bad back from having to bend over a bit when I'm cooking or washing up! When we go back to the UK I'll have to get some custom kitchen units put in!
I have a recipe booklet from the 1 day course I did in Chiang Mai if you're interested in trying some more Thai recipes.
I love thai, korean and chinese foods.
Live and let live...
Sorry Tallg ... nothings wrong with you cooking ... but i think you will need an extra tall cooker :P
The recipes been attached so you can try those ... :)
Hey, what's so funny about me cooking??? When the missus is out at work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, someone's got to step up and put the dinner on the table!
Thanks for sharing it with us - now share the 'doggie bag'! Fat chance of their being any left overs with your hub around, eh? ;o)
That means Birthday Party will be all Thai food

Nice write up as always Novi. You will soon be leaving QL to spend all your time socialising in the more prestigious circles of Doha society!
Nice write up Novi. Does that mean no more take aways for you, since you learnt how to cook yummy food ;-)
