KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia's top Islamic body on Saturday banned Muslims from practicing yoga, saying the Indian physical exercise contains elements of Hinduism that could corrupt Muslims.
The National Fatwa Council, which has the authority to rule on how Muslims must conduct their faith, issued a fatwa, or edict, saying yoga involves not just physical exercise but also includes Hindu spiritual elements, chanting and worship.

"It is inappropriate. It can destroy the faith of a Muslim," Council chairman Abdul Shukor Husin told reporters, noting that clerics in Egypt also issued a similar edict in 2004 that called the practice of yoga "an aberration."

Decisions by the Fatwa Council in Malaysia are not legally binding on Muslims, who comprise nearly two-thirds of the country's 27 million people, unless they are enshrined in national or Shariah laws.

You are able to say something like this just coz hinduism is a religion of peace and hindus are known for their tolerance. If you had said something even close to this about Islam there would have been a worldwide fatwa against you and your balls would have been chopped off in public. You are going too far. Islam is a very liberal relgion and we never forcefully convert anyone to become a Muslim. Everyone is entitled to practice their own religion and they have complete freedom. That is why you will find thousands of people working here who belong to various religions besides Islam like Christians, Hindus, Budhists, Sikhs, Parsees, Ismailees, Aga Khaanis,Jews etc.. There is no law which says that so and so religion people are not allowed in this country.

Qatar is a free country and the expats here are free to practice their own relgion and do whatever they want as long as they don't mess with the locals or try to influence them in any way... The Christians even have a churce here to practice their religion so what else do you want?

Yeah it is true that the art of living was closed down a few months back and some people were deported as well. The main reason behind that was some local men and women were so impressed & influenced by the art of living teaching and philosophy that they actually went to India and stayed at some ashram there to attain more peace or something like that..

You are right Kareena, yoga is just an exercise and a proven method of relaxation and stress release. keep it up. However there is no denial that peace and longevity can also be achieved by following Islamic practices of namaz and reading Quran. I cite an example of my grand mother whom in my life I never saw doing other than that besides her daily rituals. She peacefully survived 97 years without any ailment. But no one in this modern world can choose to lead such a life, hence other relaxation techniques are adopted by many...

Please try to understand, yoga is just a form of exercise for the body and mind. It has got nothing to do with religion. It is just an exercise like swimming, aerobics, tennis, walking, cycling etc

I am much more able to cope with stress than I was before I was introduced to yoga. Not only that, I have lost a lot of weight and I my skin is also trouble and acne free... I am not trying to state that he is a God Man and I don't believe in God Men/women myself but Sri Sri Ravi shankar is a great person who has done a great deal for humanity. His main aim is to "Create a Stress free mind and a Violence free world" and if you find this offensive then No comments. But if you have tolerance you would read more from http://www.artofliving.org/

Sri Sri travels to nearly 40 countries every year, exemplifying his call to globalise wisdom. His universal message is that love and wisdom can prevail over hatred and distress.

was shown because it symbolizes one form of Yoga "Padmasana" but it wasn't the God Shiva who started Yoga. He just practiced the "Padmasana" like you can see in the picture.

The word"Yoga" has many meanings out of which the most significant are "to control" and "to Unite". Yoga was a form of ancient exercise found in the "Vedas", meaning Knowledge(ancient script of Hinduism) to help control the mind and have a unison of mind and body. Since mind control is one of the biggest challenges to mankind, this form of exercise was introduced. The mind is traditionally conceived as the "king" of the psycho-physical structure which does its bidding (whether or not one has realized this). Because of the relationship between the mind and the body, the body must be first "tamed" through self-discipline and purified by various means. A good level of overall health and psychological integration must be attained before the deeper aspects of yoga can be pursued.

Yoga cannot be explained just in words it has to be experienced because Yoga focuses on different zones like the complete body, controlling the flow of energy inside the body(chakra's), different body postures(asana's) which helps to enhance your energy levels, meditation for enhancement of your spiritual level which can also improve your mind power, better control of your mind, improving the performance of your body and mind combined and also internal cleansing and removal of all negative energy from your body.

Yoga has evolved from many different forms over the years. Since approximate time of origin is between 900 and 500 BC, from the "Vedas" meaning Knowledge(ancient script of Hinduism). A form of Yoga called Ashtanga Yoga incorporates all the following

* Yama - code of conduct, self-restraint

* Niyama - religious observances, commitments to practice, such as study and devotion

* Āsana - integration of mind and body through physical activity

* Pranayama - regulation of breath leading to integration of mind and body

* Pratyahara - abstraction of the senses, withdrawal of the senses of perception from their objects

* Dharana - concentration, one-pointedness of mind

* Dhyana - meditation (quiet activity that leads to samadhi)

* Samādhi - the quiet state of blissful awareness, superconscious state.

That's "Yoga" in brief.

part of Yoga or they are just ignoring it because it comes from India and equating it with religion is a really stupid act on their part because most of us must be aware that Yoga is practiced worldwide and people from all religions worldwide have used it and has transformed Yoga into a phenomenal success worldwide in turn helping millions of people globally to fight against stress and add energy to their lives. I think those people who wanted to ban it were more interested in inculcating Religion in people than helping them practice a very good exercise of the mind body and soul. Long live Yoga.

I am well aware about your 'diplomacy' on attacking the faith. Whenever somthing comeup against the belief of islam, I used to comment on that, then you immediately says that "pls don't take this as an attack on faith, this is only my personal opinion".

See, I am a muslim and we have directives from Almighty on How to live your life. So whatever taught us to be followed to be a perferct muslim. There are nothing allowed to change Divine law by human as the Directives provided By Almighty is suitable for whole world and whole situation(you may differ on this, but i don't care as i am stating here about muslims only). So If almighty asked us to stay away from something, I am not going to raise a question about Almighty as you did. That is the difference between Muslim and Non Muslim. We know Almighty is the purest and He is aware about everything. He is the one created good and bad too. But He is the one who provided you the sense to distinguish good and bad and select the appropriate as yourself.

Followers of yoga and moderate Muslim groups criticised the ruling by Abdul Shukor Husin, chairman of the government -backed National Fatwa Council. Yoga is hugely popular in mostly-Muslim Malaysia.

“I don’t think it had caused any Muslim to convert to Hinduism, neither has it weakened their faith,” said Norhayati Kaprawi, an official with Sisters of Islam, a private group which champions the rights of Muslim women.

“It is just an exercise like tai chi, which has its roots in Buddism,” she told the Sunday Star newspaper. She said her group’s staff had been holding yoga classes for the past year and that they would continue.

Rulings by the Fatwa Council are not legally binding on the country’s Muslims, and there are no laws to punish those who ignore Council decisions — but it is an enormously influential body.

Abdul Shukor decreed that yoga was forbidden because it involves the recitation of mantras and that it encourages a union with God that is considered blasphemy in Islam.

“The practice will erode their faith in the religion,” he said yesterday. “It does not conform with Islam.”

A veteran opposition lawmaker, Lim Kit Siang, said that the edict showed that Malaysia was heading towards a conservative type of Islam which could divide the multiracial country.

“It is sending a most unfortunate message that Malaysia, instead of moving towards a moderate and universal Islam, is moving towards an opposite direction which will create divisions,” he said.

Islam is the official religion of Malaysia, where more than 60% of the population of 27mn are Muslim Malays who practice a conservative brand of the faith.

About 25% of the population is ethnic Chinese and 8% is ethnic Indian, most of whom are Hindus.

Yoga, an ancient Indian aid to meditation dating back thousands of years, is a popular stress-buster in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

Muslim yoga teacher Siti Suheila Merican said that while yoga practice should not involve worshipping, the physical movements were good for improving health.

“Worldwide it has been accepted as an excercise for health benefits,” she was quoted as saying by the Star newspaper. – AFP "

Nice,

I believe no muslim will do Yoga to worship Hindu Gods(Idols). Yoga is done for health, so where is the need for fatwa? There is controversy over uttering OME, but faith comes from heart not lips...

I agree with AbgLee. If you use chanting of worship to hindu god, it become haram for muslim. This is only applied to the practicing mulsims. The one who doesn't care about the teaching of Islam doesn't have to worry about this Fatwa also.

I think the key point of the Fatwa, is, Yoga is okay unless there is a Hindu spiritual elements e.g chanting and worship, then it becomes haram.

Do you have those things in Yoga?

Yoga is just an exercise and a type of meditation.. It relaxes the body, mind and soul.. There is nothing non-Islamic or Un-christian or pro-hindu about it..

Kareena: I have never practiced Yoga but from what i heard, it helps you meditating too, why should it be anti-islamic to meditate? Like i keep saying, this is another good reason for splitting social life from religion or update the shariah law to the modern times.

Hindus walk upright on their legs.

Hindus drink water.

Hindus sleep at night by lying down on bed.

And so on......

And Hindus have been doing these things much before the birth of Islam.

Now I wonder when the Malaysian clerics will issue an edict against these.

a.k.a.: You made the wrong question ;)

You should have asked: Are muslims that impure that they need to be told what to do everytime?

if you don't like it do not follow

if a broken rule is a law,you might be jailed

if a broken rule is a religious law, you might not go to heaven

anyway, it is your choice...

I remember watching this news on TV sometime back, that Two Church halls ban yoga in UK

They banned a yoga teacher and her classes saying that Yoga is un-Christian.

But issuing a funny 'fatwa' is not really a new thing for church too, anybody remembers Gaileo Galilie...?

So, who cares really!!!
