Dann, yes you're right, we are in the middle of a desert and have little natural rainfall.

But you're wrong in saying that the water we use is recycled, not that recycled water is bad of course,in the UK (and most european countries)sewage is treated and pottable water of a high standard is produced.

The water here is produced from desalination, they take sea water and remove ALL impurities, add a small amount of chlorine to keep the water sterile as it travels to your home, and thats it! The only contaminants the water may contain are those that are picked up on it's journey from the plant to your tap, there are easy to filter out using a bog standard water filter.

The standards maintained at the plant are higher than the standards bottled water is regulated to. At the start of 2008 several brands of bottled water were pulled off the shelves due to spot checks revealing high levels of pollutants. whoops.

one last comment, in short the reason why mineral water is not sutible as actually because it contains TOO MANY minerals for an infant. This leads to problems with osmoregualtion, and ironically water poisoning, which will induce seizures.

Tap water, has all minerals stripped out and only chlorine and fluroide added, boiling removes the chlorine, and the fluroide is in safe concentrations.

You have had your health advisor, information from the british government, and me, a biologist give you informed advice.

Wake up!

Heh Evian spelt backwards gives you Naive

The UK department of health has the following advice on mineral water and babies...

"Excessive sodium intake is undesirable especially in infancy."

"High nitrate content of water is one of the causes of methaemoglobinaemia in infants. Where the concentration exceeds 50 milligrams per litre (as nitrate ion) water undertakers [providers] are obliged to inform the health authorities and professions in the affected area. Water with a concentration of nitrate greater than 100 milligrams per litre is not suitable for infant feeding."

"High concentrations of nitrate and sulphur are present in some natural mineral waters. High sulphate levels of 400 - 500 milligrams per litre may be purgative [cause excessive bowel movements] especially in children."

"Natural mineral waters may contain varying amounts of fluoride and those with high levels are unsuitable as part of an infant's diet or for making up dried foods or drinks because of the risk of fluorosis of the tooth enamel."

" 'Natural mineral water' is covered by less comprehensive regulations than tap water and may contain higher concentrations of solutes such as nitrate, sodium, fluoride and sulphate which might lead to solute overload if these waters are given to young infants."

The tap water that we drink every day contains only chloride and flouride - all minerals are removed during the treatment process. However, with mineral water the composition is unchanged - extra minerals are neither added nor removed from it.

"Check the label and avoid using water in bottles labelled 'natural mineral water' - they are not required to meet all the standards for tapwater and other bottled waters."

What you are doing is potentially dangerous, it may have been OK for other posters but you could be the unlucky one. There is a reason professionals are advising you to just boil tap water, which is held to greater quality controls than mineral water.

By the way you will have to boil the mineral water anyway to kill off the bacterial cultures present in the bottle since nothing is added to the water to disinfect it.

Still I will never understand why people go through the risks of bottle feeding when nature has prepaired a solution perfect for the job - breast milk.

Good luck with the baby, I hope your decision doesn't lead to the little one having problems, but at least you've been warned.

Use bottled water, but make sure that the sodium content is as low as possible, and that the water doesn't contain fluoride.

argh, not this!

Right, misconception clear-up time.

Bottled water in many cases is just bottled tap water. Nestle's brand over here, and 'oasis' from dubai, is just bottled tapwater, nothing else.

Tap water contains chemicals.

Yes it does, thankfully, otherwise it wouldn't be water. It is made up of the elements hydrogen and oxygen, which are chemicals. It may also contain trace elements and a small abount of chlorine to prevent bacterial growth, boiling tap water will remove the chlorine.

Bottled water is safer.

Don't be too sure, Mineral water can only be classified as mineral water by the EU if it has had nothing added to it, that includes anything that will disinfect the water, which WILL contain a small bacterial culture.

Secondly, read this

http://www.rd.com/your-america-inspiring-people-and-stories/rethink-what-you-drink/article51807.html

It's a fairly good laymans summary of standards testing and safety of bottled water.

Either boil the tapwater or breast feed your child, I'm supprised you're not doing the latter since breast milk contains antibodies which will give your child limited protection against illness.

Your health adviser gave you qualified advice, try listening to her, the qualification means something.

we use mineral water with our 7 month old. for the first 3 months i was boiling the mineral water, because at the end of the day you can never trust the source 100%. probably a bit excessive, but she was our first, so you know how it goes.

if you are worried about minerals or anything else, get a baby multivitamin.

ooooo plz don everboil the tap water and feed the baby its harmful specially for childs kidneys.long back from filtered tap water we switched on to mineral water such as safa, manhal, aqua and many.coz the tap water here is treated with chemicals and it seems consuming dat for a long period of time causes kidney stones.

Just to be clear, I am the father.

I have a six month old son and we use bottled water, although I have doubts that there isnt enough minerals in it but its no comparison to tap water.

If you are still having doubts about the water just boiled it, it wont take a minute. Sometimes we do that too.

And our baby is healthy and sound alhamdullah,

Hi angelic,

A heartiest congrats to u for becoming second time mom..

I too delivered few months back..I m using mineral water for making baby's milk..Its ok..I dont know who told u that mineral waters r not ok after certain period..I m using this since last 7months..And dear, v dont have other options too..Atleast i cant allow my baby to drink BOILED TAP WATER...NOWAY...So better have trust on mineral waters..nothing harm in that..

I hope u must have come here with the enough stock of BABY powdered milk from ur own country as most westerners adopt this practice of getting important things(specially babys or kids stuffs)from their resepective countries..But i m assuring u that evenif ur stock for powdered milk will get over, u can try SIMILAC...Its gud..I go for this..BEST LUCK..
