Single female

OzViking
By OzViking

Hi All... I am a single Aussie female in my 40's thinking about relocating to Qatar next year. I am a little bit hesitant about living in Qatar as a single white female and would love to hear how other single ladies have experiences the move to the Middle East. I hope to be offered a position in a 5 star hotel commencing mid 2009. Anything I should keep in mind when considering the offer? Thanks to all :)

Handsome_Qatar, she siad she is Aussie, and also mentioned she is white. If all this together makes her "indian", than yes, she might be the one.

Besides, this thread is over 3 years old. She most likely already found a "friend"..

as long as you're mentally prepared for the few initial hiccups things should be ok after that. some things maybe more 'challenging' for Asians like myself but they work out in the end. i think working in an environment like a 5-star hotel would make adjusting easier ...

take the opportunity to learn & understand more about Islam and the different cultures here.

why not get an update from ellebee! how's your new school, ellebee?

Register with the Australian and NZ group (anziq@yahoo,com,au). They have info on events etc.

A little piece of advice, a sanity saving tip really, you really need to have patience and an understanding that things will get done - eventually (in sh'allah). If you are experiencing difficulties (and you WILL), it's better to present yourself in person to rectify the problem than try to deal with it over the phone.

Oh, you'll learn all sorts of things here!

it's great to get some 'inside information' from someone who has already made the move and faced the trials and tribulations!

I think Qatar sounds like a very interesting destination, although I'm sure it would be a culture shock to those who haven't done their research!?

Have a fantastic New Year!

to everyone who replied to my post, I really appreciate your feedback and suggestions and I am now very excited about the prospect of moving to Qatar!

To those of you who seem very intriqued as to why I'm still single in my 40's - I have been married and have two beautiful adult daughters but unfortunately not all relationships last forever :(

So it's now time for me to move on with my life and Qatar seems like a very good option... not that I am moving there to find a new man, I just want the opportunity to experience another culture and hopefully save a bit of money. I am very happy that I found this site and I will be keeping a close eye on the QL forums.

Happy New Year to All ;)

OzViking.. I think you will be Ok as long as you follow most of the comments above.. There is sizable Aussie community here, plenty of Rugby loving people also have Aussie rule here also.. All of my Ausies mates love it here so I think appart from moving into a new country and a slight culture shock every thing is same as back home if not better.

Good Luck

I'm also aussie, single and 40!!! (don't quite know how THAT happened :-)) As for living in Qatar (I've been here for "a few" years), there are heaps of things to do BUT you have to get out there and find them.

Things that drive ME crazy -

Ramadan - nothing opened when you want it to be

Humidity - August / September seem to be the worst months for that, but the rest of the time it's just HOT!!!!

Beige - everything seems to be this colour - inside AND out

Drivng - crazy, scary, frustrating. But once you master the whole "on the other side of the road" thing, and be patient (traffic jams a daily occurance), it's easy enough to do.

Things I like about it:

Generally, you can get whatever you want - so long as you know where to find it (including Vegemite. Yeah!!!!)

Most of the locals are friendly and will go out of their way to help (unless of course they happen to be in a Land Cruiser etc, then they expect YOU to get out of THEIR way. Refer to previous comment about driving)

Cultural experiences - getting better all the time

Sporting events - some of the "big names" come to Qatar to play all sorts of games. Entry to these used to be free (i think there may be a small charge now)

Good luck! Most people either love it or hate it.

My girlfriend and I have been working the details of her moving here (I'm already in Qatar). She's in her 40's as well. Qatar is great, a wonderful mix of traditional Arab culture with very modern amenities. As mentioned above, if your accommodations and transportation are covered you should do well. If it's a five star hotel, that's a great start right there! If your coworkers don't help you navigating around, hire a maha (spelling?), they will be your driver and guide. I think it's probably a little over $100Aus per day, which actually is fairly reasonable for the service. Let us know what hotel you end up with and we'll come help you celebrate!

for your kind replies! I have a friend who moved to Qatar 12 months ago with her husband and they love it! I was just a bit hesitant of moving to a strange country on my own but your replies have put me at ease. I guess it doesn't really matter where in the world you end up, it always takes a bit of time to settle in :)

I will make sure that accommodation and transport is included in the offer/contract. This is a great site and I will continue to check out the forums to keep me up to date!

Thanks again :)

Single, white female - less problem than Asian females. You get to cut queue in many places, eg. like the immigration dept when I was lining up in a long queue for the health checks for my residence permit.

I didn't know anyone at all in Qatar when I landed here. In fact, I never even heard of Qatar till 2 months before I came and didn't have any time to do any research cos too busy working and studying till end July. You could call it a giant leap of faith.

Be reasonably alert and you'll be fine. No need to be hesitant. Very nice people here, family oriented, very decent, helpful, etc. (I'm referring to the ones I've met and gotten to know and some of the regular posters, not referring to the online lurkers whose intentions are suspect).

"Anything I should keep in mind when considering the offer?" Maybe search this site for other practical info, and ask the seniors / regular posters specific questions if you need to. Cost of living is the major concern you should address in your offer. Accommodation being the main budget buster, transport and food. If you love clubbing, then there are a few places but they are limited.

You will have a good company and will get some nice friends too. and you dont need to worry about anything. in beginning its bit hard for a newbie to get used to a new place culture but you sure will settle down pretty fast if you are fun loving person.

As per getting Job in a Hotel i think they will provide you accommodation and transportation which they have for their staff.

Accomodation and Transport should be your major concerns, other than that you'll love it here :o)
