I am upset because....

Hello
I would like to share with you something that happened to me today.Something that really upset me and and shocked me.

Today I went out with my baby for a short walk.I normally walk in the neighborhood where I know the place.
I did some small shoppings and I was heading to another shop when one big car passed by.It was white Land Rover or similar size car.In a while the car turned around and it passed me by again this time from the opposite direction.I thought the guy lost his way.But..to my surprise he was driving behind me slowly and when it was again to pass me by he stopped opened the window and started to talk to me.I also stopped because I was sure he wanted to ask for directions or so.When I saw it was Qatari man I was even more suprised. He asked me if he could give me a lift.I refused saying no thanks. He repeated his questions one more time and this time I firmly told him I didn't need any lift! Finally he asked me if I wanted his phone number.I knew what he meant and it really pissed me off.I asked him what for I should take your phone number!!He said something that I didn't hear and repeated his question. That was all.I told him I was going to call my husband right away.He disappeared quicker than he appeared.I was so shocked that I could not get his car number. That really upset me,so much that after the first shock I started to cry and just came back home with my baby.
What for is it? Because I do not look like local? because I do not speak Arabic?because I do not wear traditional black abaya?and that all give men to treat me as easy object?and what about my scarf, what about my baby I take outside?Am I supposed to stay home and leave it only with my husband because there are those who act in a strange way?I have never felt so much humiliated like today:(

Really... this is not the first time i hear about these sort of situations... if nothing else - letting asside the obvious about his stupid and rude behaviour - these guys should look for a "crash course" on how to behave socially.... or how to try and make contact with the opposite sex... without freaking everyone out!!!

It is soooo pathetic how these men behave.

Omlayla, sorry to hear about your experience, all men here arent the same but let me tell you there are plenty of creepy ones.

Make sure you get his license plate number next time, punch it on on your phone and call the police.

I actually heard one guy say once that "better to go after a woman with a baby, we know she has experience"

Pigs, plain and simple.

Well, yes, it was sexual harassment, but it was also a little more. If I'm the victim of harassment I'm disgusted and angry, but if I'm followed and accosted by a total stranger then I'm frightened. I realize that Qatar is safer than the US but I would still be quite uneasy about the encounter. As you say, masha'allah it turned out alright.

I am sorry for misinforming you about my nationality.I didn't check my profile.

I think there is nothing more to add other than to say thank you who showed their interest and support.

For sure I learned lesson from it and hope it will never ever happen again.

You know what really annoys me about people on this website? Is most you act like this only happens here, even if this is a Muslim country it doesn't mean there aren't any assholes like any other place on the planet.

OmLayla, funnily enough I thought you were Qatari because your profile says your nationality is 'Qatar' which lead me to believe you were indeed Qatari and not say...Bengali or Peleponese.......

Neatly done Abu. Just a personal note really . My sisterinlaw who always dresses and behaves very conservatively has this problem costantly. What I find amazing is that she often hears people speaking in arabic about her in less than complimentary terms though . Her revenge is to start speaking to anyone around her in FLUENT arabic, she is lucky and always has the last laugh.

Cases of rape and other violence occur the same like in western countries however according to some sources it is not recommended to talk/write about them. And this is how the image of bad Western countries is being created. But I do not think that hiding things like that will make things better,on the contrary.

By mjamille28• 16 Jan 2009 09:34
mjamille28

I am quoting,"more rapes are being held in western countries rather than in mid east" -- cases of rape in the mid east are not high so you say, maybe because there are not that many cases "being reported"..

anyway, it's obvious the guy wants an easy lay and he seems to think all women are easy, he certainly underestimated you....glad you're ok....

By OmLayla• 16 Jan 2009 08:05
OmLayla

I am not Qatari.Where did you get it from?

And why do people think that only Arab people are Muslims or can be?If Islam is only for Arabs let's make it clear...And yes I wore the scarf and as you see it didn't prevent that guy from acting this way.So no matter what you wear you are always exposed. And that is becoming sick and dangerous.

By anonymous• 16 Jan 2009 00:21
anonymous

... if you could, then, you would find whom i blamed for all these...

i think mid east ppl have misconceptions bout western women, simultaneosly, western society has different sorts of problems.... how can you forget racism ! .... do you think Obama issue would be able to wash all those past?...

see, i dont belong to mid east, neither do i western.... and that's why i said neutrally..unlike you guys....

i feel sorry for the lady who experienced such embarassment, but, simunteneously its true that, every day, more rapes are being held in western countries rather than in mid east....

in western society, sorry to say, people are having sex almost every public places.... incest relationships are started being accepted there ! ..... ppl even at university campus, walks topless.... exploit sexuality for getting good grades in school or promotion in office....

i am sorry, but, please dont portray western society as pure....

marriage had been an institute, but western society have broken it....

your phone number LOL! kidding aside its horrible when people do this things. even i have a bad experience, when im waiting for taxi around 5am in the morning and i wore my uniform going to my work when suddenly 1 landcruiser grey color pass by then one guy open his window and throw something at me. i was shocked but when i realize they throw raw egg at me but still lucky because its not spoiled and not smell bad at all. after that they laughing and my instinct said, THROW a rock when you found something. i saw a rock and i throw at the window and i see crack hehehe. then i run as fast as i can, i was terrified. im still lucky though coz i break there windows in exchange of throwing eggs at me. the next day i change my routine where i can look for taxi hehehe.

the next time somebody hitting like that at you. make sure you have your mobile and call somebody or police then look for the plate number and report that all.

in the west, someone wont approach you in a mall to sleep with you, in the west someone wont try to sleep with you if you have your baby with you, people respect marriage more, people wont look at you like you have never seen a woman again, even if I walk with my husband these people cant stop staring!!!!!!!! They look at you like they have never seen a woman before. In the west nobody will ever even look at you and men dont treat you like an object of desire but like an equal contributing partner with a brain

Happens all the time here

just tell them to bugger off....

shout loudly in Arabic/English or if they dont bugger off throw a little stone and chip the windshield.... LOL

I made the mistake the other day.... coming out of parking space at Villagio - with my hand i just gestured to another driver to go into my space...

he thought that was it and followed me all the way home...

I thought it was hilarious.... how could that have been possibly construed as 'i think yr hot lets shag now'?????...saddo

Dont get sad - get mad! thats fun :)

Had to learn the same:not giving smile to people in the street. In my country giving smile doesn't not always mean invitation but kindness;also I know it is not good to start conversation because it can be seen as invitation to something else...life is sometimes gloomy but for our safety we must stay like that.

By anonymous• 15 Jan 2009 22:21

Watch out next time. Never start talking to them; you are only entertaining the situation, when you see that it is not right, just walk away the opposite direction behind the car. Don’t talk to them, don’t look back.. keep walking and find a shop to go to. It is men like him that give all men a bad name here. Sorry for what happened to you, learn from it and get stronger from it.

So sorry to hear that. That was pathetic. It happened to me when i was pregnant about 7 months. What I did just ignore him, and walk away. Because if u speak 1 word then he`ll continue. Next time better for you pretending not to hear and walk away. But I hope there will be no next time.

So sorry to hear your story. Seriously, there are a lot of CREEPS out there like this. We just can't be sure of the nationality, but it can be anyone - even your/our fellow countrymen or other weird/freaky nationalities.

Even though I am a guy, I see to it that such a thing don't happen to me - especially with my Girlfriend around. I have my camera always ready to take the plate numbers of those SOBs! In a different world/place like this, you should learn how to survive, and not be victimized by such fools.

Take care always.
