Is it true that the top floor apartments are far too hot in summer to be bearable?

This is really urgent! We are about to sign up for an apartment on the top floor of the building but also have the choice of one lower down. We would prefer to be on the top floor because it's quieter, but this evening someone warned us that it will get over-heated in the summer and will be unbearable, even with the air-conditioning full on. Can anyone tell us if this is true? Surely they must put enough insulation on the roof to stop that from happening?

It has not been a problem for us. We moved from the UK last July into a new top floor apartment (6th floor) I don't know what the temperature is like compared to lower floors but with the aircon on not an issue and being from the UK the summer temperatures here are very very extreme. We have reflective glass on the windows which I assume helps, seems to be fairly standard with the newer buildings.

Yes it is true. Hot air rises and cold air sinks. You'll be warmer year round-which means higher electricity in the summer due to running your AC more but also lower bills in winter due to running your heater less. The insulation in your flat will ultimately decide how much higher and lower the bills will be. With AC you will be fine. Also if the bulding is very tall-30 floors or more, you actually could be cooler on the top floor due to less radiated heat from the ground warming the flat. Flats closer to ground level receive heat reflected during the day and heat released from aborbsion at night. But in the winter this is a good thing.

Hi, The summer months are really hot over here. In our flat the construction is good so my friends who stay on the top floor do not have much trouble. But their flat is warmer in summer than ours and colder in winter. Don't get a ground floor one because it could get really cold. That is if it's at ground level with the car park etc. My friends who stay in that flat find it too cold in winter. We have a middle level flat and I really like it. The temperature is nice. But you do need a good working A/C in summer. So check whether the A/C is properly working.

Depends on what kind of apartment you're looking at, how's the insulation and air conditioning, etc.

In the area where my company has rented a block of walk up flats - I've been informed and believe that the occupants of the penthouse flats get slightly more toasted in summer than the rest of us. But note: my flat and your apartment could be a world of difference. Mine is just rather basic.

Really depends on the Construction and if there is any insulation..Generally the top floor is warmer that the lower floors, but if the Airconditioning is working properly..then should be no problem..
