Jobs in Qatar: Are we really safe?

treysdad

Tonight I have been watching the news coming in from CNN, BBC and Al Jazeera. They were reporting the series of job cuts and layoffs announced by big companies in America and Europe.

On nearby countries, I've heard sad stories of layoffs in Dubai that even one supposedly blue chip developer just laid off people without giving their end of service package and return ticket. Employees just bought tickets on their own just to get back home than spending months fighting for the serverance package they deserved.

For 3 days now I have an open web page from a Philippine network entitled: "Qatar likely destination for laid off Pinoys in UAE" http://www.gmanews.tv/story/145717/Qatar-likely-destination-for-laid-off... I have been reading and re-reading it for 3 days now. It seems it was the other way around a year ago.

My landlord told me this weekend that Qatar seems to be a fort during a storm that he stopped looking for job opportunities from other countries. He has friends from the UAE asking for job openings here in Qatar. He decided to stay put until the storm of this economic crisis dies down.

All these stories made me think: Are we really safe with our jobs here in Qatar?

But Qatar too is cracking....

1st it will be visible with the banks...which it already has.

2nd it will affect the building projects...indirectly hit by the banks.

3rd it will affect the Automobile Showrooms as lesser cars will sell.

4th By then it will start affecting the ancillary industries.

"We begin this New Year with dampened enthusiasm and dented optimism. Our happiness is diluted and our peace is threatened by the financial illness that has infected our families, organizations and nations.

Everyone is desperate to find a remedy that will cure their financial illness and help them recover their financial health. They expect the financial experts to provide them with remedies, forgetting the fact that it is these experts who created this financial mess.

Every new year, I adopt a couple of old maxims as my beacons to guide my future. This self-prescribed therapy has ensured that with each passing year, I grow wiser and not older. This year, I invite you to tap into the financial wisdom of our elders along with me, and become financially wiser.

Hard work: All hard work brings profit; but mere talk leads only to poverty.

Laziness: A sleeping lobster is carried away by the water current.

Earnings: Never depend on a single source of income.

Spending: If you buy things you don 't need, you 'll soon sell things you need.

Savings: Don 't save what is left after spending; spend what is left after saving.

Borrowings: The borrower becomes the lender 's slave.

Accounting: It 's no use carrying an umbrella, if your shoes are leaking.

Auditing: Beware of little expenses; a small leak can sink a large ship.

Risk-taking: Never test the depth of the river with both feet.

Investment: Don 't put all your eggs in one basket.

I 'm certain that those who have already been practicing these Principles remain financially healthy. I 'm equally confident that those who resolve to start practicing these principles will quickly regain their financial health.

Let us become wiser and lead a happy, healthy, prosperous and Peaceful life.

Construction in Dubai was mammoth in comparison to Qatar.

Take all the towers being constructed at the west bay together and it will just add up to make one Burj Dubai Tower!!!

Hydropolis Underwater Hotel and Resort 66feet under the sea (to be completed by 2009)...Do we have anything in comparison under construction?

Hotel Atlantis at Jumeirah....do we have anything in comparison.

The Metro Network (to be completed in 2009)...do we have anything in comparision?

Mall of the Emirates...do we have anything in comparision?

The World Islands....do we have anything in comparision?

Nakheel Tower a 1.6 km tall tower ...that will dwarf the Burj Tower....by half!!!!

The Dubai Waterfront is proposed to become the largest waterfront and largest man-made development in the world.

The Pentominium...

Palm Jumeirah...

Dubailand

DubaiMarina

Dubai Sports City...the list is almost endless...

...All this without the Gas/Oil Reserves !!!

If you compare the projects to Dubai's size its mind boggling.

Honestly Qatar is far....far...far from Dubai.

Its like comparing recession in USA to a country like Afghanisthan!!!

The comparision is so stark.

UAE - Qatar - Kuwait all the tree countries facing the same Economic problem (Credit Crunch) but the media in each state showing the ppl part of the problem only. I know that 3 banks in Qatar fired around 200 bankers so far. so I think it is only a matter of size the Banks or the companies in UAE is large so that is why we feel it or we hear about it. but every where there are problems. we all wish a pray that this problem will end within 2010 hopefully

Hi all,

I have a friend that works as a travel agent and she says that she is seeing an abnormal amount of one way tickets to countries that the Qatar work force is comprised of. Hmmm...take it for what it's worth. ;-)

I do agree to your humble yet practical thought. No place, country, company, people is/are safe then our ownself. Everything lies upon how we are, who we are,

whats the output. It depends and greatly effects our presence of wherever we live and what/how we do.

Destiny lies where we are.

"Every good deed is ‘sadaqah’. To meet your brother with a smiling face, or (even) to pour out from your bucket into his container is ‘sadaqah’."

Related by Bukhari.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah Verse 177:

177 It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces toward East or West; but it is righteousness to believe in Allah, and the Last Day, and the Angel,s and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance out of love for Him for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer and practice regular charity; to fulfill the contracts which ye have made; and to be firm and patient in pain (or suffering) and in adversity and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the Allah-fearing.

The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: "Every Muslim has to give ‘sadaqah’." The companions (r.a.) asked: "O Prophet of Allah (saws), what about the one who has nothing?" He (saws) said: "He should work with his hands to give ‘sadaqah’." They asked: "If he cannot find [work]?" He (saws) replied: "He should help the needy who asks for help." They asked: "If he cannot do that?" He (saws) replied: "He should then do good deeds and shun evil, for this will be taken as ‘sadaqah’."

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"How remarkable is the case of the believer! There is good for him in everything, but this is not the case for anyone except for the believer! When the believer receives any good, he is thankful to Allah, and gets a reward; and when some misfortune befalls him, he endures it patiently, for which he is (also) rewarded."

Red Pope,

The formula "Credit = Debt", is universal.

Here in Qatar, as we all know and you highlighted, does have an addition:

Credit = Debt => You will be stuck in this country, until you pay off the debt!

By cat.inc• 27 Jan 2009 08:40

You can expect lots of workers offering their services for less. Knowing the business ethics of many companies in the Gulf you can expect them to start asking you to take a pay cut.

Your formula applies only for some others countries.

But here in Qatar;

Credit+debt = You will be stuck in this country, until you pay off the debt. Your passport will be confiscated and you will not be allowed to leave this place at all. You could ask some of QL members that are facing that dilemma.

As some have already replied, it is obvious that nobody is safe anywhere. Life is always uncertain and in these days, more than ever.

The world should learn a lesson and moderate consumption (particularly when credit is used) and always be prepared for an eventual bad turn!

Remember: Credit = Debt!!!!!!!!!!

The effects and fear of unemployment are here to stay lingering for a while. The best bet is to stay put and save as much money possible at least six months to stay afloat in bare minimum. No one is safe, no jobs are secure.

Good morning! In my opinion, there is no such thing as safe job anymore, be it in your own country or overseas. The only thing we need to do now is to give our best shot to save. We must start to cost-cut in our lifestyle as well, so whatever happens, at least we are ready.
