STOP COMPARING!!!

STOP COMPARING
By Bo Sanchez

We live in a pathologically dissatisfied world. And I'm going to tell you why. Because we love to compare. Go around the world and discover that people aren't happy with their bodies.

Filipinos want to be fair-complexioned like Westerners, and so buy bleaching stuff. Westerners want to own bronzed bodies like ours, and so purchase tanning lotions.

Those with moles have them removed, while those who don't strategically implant beauty spots.

Some people want to shed a few pounds to look like Ally McBeal, while others want to gain some baby fat to look like Drew Barrymore.

When are we ever going to stop and simply be happy with how we look? We live in a sick world. I tell you. And that sickness is comparisonitis. Take a look at wealth. When we drive our old Toyota, it really suits us fine. We feel blessed in fact when the rain pours outside and we feel snug and cozy on its faded upholstered seats.

But the moment we see our own officemate (or neighbor, or buddy, or cousin, or brother) drive his sleek sky-blue, four-door, four-wheel-drive Rav4, we automatically feel like third class children of God.
Next time we drive our bumpy, noisy, rusted, dilapidated Toyota (notice how all the defects come out all of a sudden?), we feel deprived, dispossessed, pariah, debased, and only a little higher than the insects of the earth.

Listen carefully. Bill Gates' total assets are worth $60 billion. That's more than the GNP of some small countries. Tiger Woods earns $80 million simply by smiling on TV in a Nike shirt. And the stars of the sitcom Friends are paid $50,000 per episode! My point? No matter how hard you work, there'll still be some people who will be richer than you are.

And there'll be some people who will be more beautiful, have more sex appeal, have more boyfriends/girlfrie nds, and have more problems. Try it for once. Stop looking around. Don't compare!

Don't compare her nose with your nose.
Don't compare his wife with your wife.
Don't compare his salary with your salary.
Don't compare her breast size with your breast size.
Don't compare her kid's report card with your kid's report card.
Don't compare his prayer group with your prayer group.
Don't compare her/his cellulite deposits with your cellulite deposits.

Stop comparing and start living and you'll be happier with your life.

This is crucial: The most difficult thing in the world is to be who you are not. Pretending and trying to be someone else is the official pastime of the human race. (I don't think dogs and cats and cows and horses have this problem).

And the easiest thing in the world is to be yourself. Be happy. Live!

There must be a reason why God made you tall or short or fat or thin or bumpy all over.

Love who you are!

Dear thread writer,

in addition of your thought---without compitition may be mankind can not progress.only thing is taking it possitively.in an expalination of 'hadith' of prophet(pbuh)--in wealth look at people who are poorer than you.sure this will increase your faith.your heart will stishfy with what you have.what ever wealth you have, what ever beuty you have ,it will go at the end.So only need to clean your heart from all jealousy and you will happy.Thank you for writing such a nice 'thread'.

mios23 said "... it's the nature of human being to compare therselves, you can not do anything about it, you need to comapre yourself to other to evolve and reach higher horizons HOWEVER the feeling of being superior is THE Wrong thing....that's how I see it"

Comparing itself is fine but the reaction to what one finds after that comparison is what makes the difference. Many people take it negatively, whine and do nothing to change their circumstances for the better or they do something for their own benefit but which harms others. If one takes it proactively, then one would "evolve and reach higher horizons" as you said.

There's a saying that "Attitude determines Altitude" and indeed it does.

As for feeling superior - yes, I agree that it's the wrong thing .. but there is a very fine line between arrogance and self confidence.

When building up people's confidences, you tell them to stick to their opinions as that is their perspective of what is right in their particular circumstances and no one can take that away from them. But that usually gets taken too literally and they cross over into being egoistical. Always a fine line.

But the truly confident will be able to see the bigger picture and adapt without losing themselves. Only the ones who are not confident will cause all the trouble because of their lack and fear.

And yes, everyone is at different stages in their lives. Everyone is a "work in progress" so like someone said, live and let live. Some people may be "narrow minded", "dumb", etc to others but they just have not learned what others have...yet.

Intelligent, it should be propagating and imitating the good things done by this little girl you've mention and not comparing oneself to it for you must know that comparison often leads to confusion, it's better to look at it as a better example for us to follow

and for those guys that are just eating plain breads, it's not by comparing that may help them but taking actions in a way we can even if we see the difference from us to them, it isn't gonna make any good on them so it's as best as the title of the article says;

stop comparing!

and make actions for you may waste your time comparing while others are making their move to help out and be like that girl.

^_^ IMHO

It's called Satisfaction...and everyone lacks it. It's human nature, otherwise we'll still be in the stone age without it. No one gets satisfied with what/who you got...you always seek for something better. It should be constructive in a way. Otherwise, it will be envy, and it makes you greedy.

Simple solution:

If you don't like what you have/you're doing, change it.

If you can't change it, change your attitude.

But NEVER COMPLAIN.

It's not because things are difficult that we don't dare, it's because we don't dare that makes things difficult!

Yes the-birdie and those nepalese who are living from last couple on months on just plain bread (todays Gulftimes). Compare our self to this 15 year old girl and her noble cause who is visiting poor families in Abu Hamour (todays Gulftimes).

Lets start comparing who is taking care of others more. Lets start comparing who is reaching out to needy more.

Peace.

Bowlers 21..... you said some bitter truth

I dont know why some of our freinds reacts hysterically.

it is a fact that we always compare and think ourselves too "low" and try to reach the "high" next door

why dont we start another comparison ?

Who pays more charity to the needy or downtrodden ?

see the poor labour Nepali or Bangladshi who could not see his famil for the last two years ?

Let us sponsor a ticket for him ?

Who pays more charity ? me or she ?

Can we start such a comparison ?? anybody there ???????

tess, unless your joking I think you missed the mark on this one.

the standard of life that you strive for is your own business, it should not be a competition. i have a decent amt of $ for my age I guess but I wear plain colored t's, jeans, and my trusty ole vans. If you saw me at home you might even see my camper-van/mobile apartment =) It's all up to you what your priorities are. ...and the appearance thing I just dont get at all...

exactly INDORACHEL! i was awestruck with her lines...coz sometimes our thoughts are filled with our wants or we need a change in our lives...and u want as drastic as possible esp when ur swinging on the same pattern for awhile. but life has its purpose..i think we need to see its meaning or reason before we can move on to a different level.

im so thankful coz not everyday you'll meet someone who can replenish your way of thinking. may this words give each one a more positive attitude in life.

Cheers!

just wanna add coming from a very pleasant lady whom i met last night...aside from physical looks and material things, she told everyone to enjoy what u have. enjoy being single, enjoy with your kids while they are stil young and not wish they could have their debut or graduate in college,etc... bottomline ENJOY THE PHASE OF YOUR LIFE. coz u wouldnt be happy if you will always look for what u dont have. instead make it as a motivation not an obsession.

aamir_at, the thread maker's not the one who wrote that stuff, he's not the originator of that "sh*t" you're referring to, think it through dude, you may hit the wrong person by that... it was a copy & paste article by the way and the original author was indicated there above...

let us not throw to anyone a non sense words that we too don't come to understand ourselves...

if there's wrong with it, it's only because it was being shared on you and you still have the option not to accept.

comparing in positive way and the dozes is not too suffocating is good for you. Give you motivation to be better person. But if you took it in negative way and you become obsessed with your zahir then is bad idea.
