Thanx everyone !

Like many pointed out, the purpose here is to teach the child financial responsibility and build his confidence level. I still remember one v impressive model ( fictious, though ... I read it in 'Kane & Abel' ) where out of every week's allowance, the child is allowed to spend a certain portion, must save/invest another portion and then, must keep aside some money for charity. He is asked to maintain a full account of his finances so he can understand where his money is going....... and Voila, he grows up to be one of the biggest bankers in America !

I'm not as ambitious as that, but would still like to teach my child to handle money more responsibly, especially here in the Gulf, where children get everything so easily.

Thanx again , All, & have a good weekend !

Giving your kid an allowance gives him a small freedom, a small idea to be responsible, to know how to budget, to know how to give the needy and not only spend, to know the value of savings, to understand the importance of contribution, and to realize that experience is the best teacher.

And when you decide to give, be a parent, guide him/her how to use it wisely. Deep huh? But think about it. Cheers!

I fix QAR 50 per week worth of personal need fund (virtual) but not in the hand yet.

I encourage him to buy thing on his own and try settle with cashier etc (learning purpose)while he shops with me. just sharing

dear parent, if u r providing everything that ur child need, dont encourage them with pocket money / fones, etc., at this age. school going children shud concentrate on their studies and extra curricular activities rather than start spending money at this young age. ofcourse the decision is yours whether to give them money / fones or not.

hi Zulfia,,, your question may invite various answers as per the nationality and financial and cultural background of the person who reply.

there are parents who spend 150 or 300 as pocket money. THere are parents who purchase very expensive mobile fones to the child. It depends on what type "posh" lifestyle the parents themselves show to the kids.

if the kid takes his lunch to school everyday, I dont think why he needs more than 100 per month. esepcialy in middle est, the kids follow us everywhere , all expeniduture are met by parents.

if the kids are interested to freak out in City cneter in group,,, it is diferetn story.

Anyway, here in doha the kid is always with us, goes out for shopping with us only so why the pocket money for 12 year old kid, i prefer to provide him / her everything that she requested for so no need of pocket money, she takes lunch from house itself while in school, ya if she / he goes for picnic or something of that sort then 50QR

Our daughter is 12 and she gets 150QR a month, plus a 50QR Hala card. We buy clothes she needs - but if she wants extra clothes or a load of tat from Claire's Accessories she has to get that herself.

GodFather.

I would say for school every day QR10 for lunch.

It depends on you how nuch you can afford. I would no more than QR50 per week.
