Bringing a Dog Qatar

Hello everybody I am writing to ask about advice on bringing the family pet. He is a Chocolate Labrador and when i was down there in May (08) i did not see much in the way of big dogs. Any advice or personal experience would be appreciated.

Thanks

We brought our chocolate lab here a year ago. There are so many different feelings about bringing a large dog here....I would say, if he is an indoor dog, that would ok. There are really no grassy areas where a pet can go and have fun here. The summers are brutal and our lab couldn't handle the heat well during his walks.

I would also suggest entering "bringing dogs to Doha" in the "search" area (top right hand corner). There is so much information--positive and negative---to help you decide what to do.

If my husband and I had to make that decision again---we would not bring a large breed dog. But, maybe you can weigh out the pros and cons and come to a great decision for you and your best friend. Labs are the best!!!

Good luck!

Aww, I'm a softie for labs (a bit obvious, isn't it?) Well, first thing is that you will need permission from your landlord to keep a pet - as you would any where. The second consideration is how old is he? I'd worry a bit about a very old dog in the heat of the summer here. It's not difficult to import a dog from the US. I would use a pet relocator like dohavets.com. There are many ex-pats and nationals here who have dogs and salukis are a popular and large breed. There was a run on German Shepherds a few years ago as well. There are beaches for swimming and playing and a few parks for get-togethers. But you will need to research where and when to walk him in public. It's not just anywhere that's acceptable. A little knowledge and sensitivity and the two of you will be just fine.
