this was what happened:

Quickpost this image to Myspace, Digg, Facebook, and others!

A maritime source told AFP the accident may have been a result of poor visibility at sea caused by fog.

I've seen announcements from the police telling people not to use hazard lights in fog. While that might not make it illegal (I confess I don't know if it is or not, I used the word in my comment above to sensationalise), it's what the police advise. The fact that some of them don't follow this advice themselves is irrelevant, and just indicative how the police drive generally.

The root problem is that many (most?) cars here don't have fog lights, which is absolutely ridiculous, but I can't see Qatar changing their car import laws to rectify this.

But despite this, it's still very dangerous to drive with your hazard lights on even if you don't have fog lights, for the reasons explained already.

adeel was saying that to indicate that you are going to turn left or right you should turn off your hazards and then use the indicators as normal. Most people don't indicate when they're turning in normal weather, so I can't see them doing this really!!!

can someone advise me

- is hazard lights usage during a fog day is ILLEGAL ?

- can the police question, if they see me using ?

- what is the logic, to turn off hazard light when

you take a turn ? ( as explained by adeel )

Well atleast now they should make it Legal, after seein todayz Fog and few dayz back as well.

Damn when these guyz will take precautions/steps :(

That's why all cars should be fitted with rear FOG lights, which are bright red and visible over a further distance than ordinary back lights.

Unfortunately, unlike other countries, I don't think cars have to legally have them in Qatar. Cos you know, they don't have fog in Qatar so why bother?

To Novita ....

I can turn off my hazards before giving the turning signal ... this is what I usually do, and then turn on the hazards on again ....

But again, I am not saying use hazards, but I know that the wavelength & amplitude of Hazard Lights is much more than the ordinary back lights of any car, therefore it can be seen from a much farther distance, specially in low visibility situations !!!

So theoretically hazards are better, but if you can always remember to turn them off before you are signalling for a turn !!! (This is usually what I do when there is too much fog)

Forget hazards, I found it safer to drive to work in reverse, then the cars coming behind me could see my main beams and spot lights.

if you use the hazzard light on, and then I drive behind you , how can you give a signal to turn left or right ????

Er, police the world over do illegal things. In NYC there's a vigilante called Jimmy Justice who videos cops making infringements on the law.

Not sure about the legality of using hazards but the police definitely advise against it.

Hazard lights are confusing and should not be used by anyone. I hope all drive safely. For sure summer is round the bend....

on our way here to duhail, most of the cars is using hazard, quite confusing for other cars.. & be careful also for the drivers who's using left & right indicator but turning the other way around... i guess they forget which one is left & right...be careful with the robot drivers with stiff neck... good morning to all...

By the way, I know putting hazards on is dangerous.... but are you sure it is illegal?

Because I saw today a couple of police vehicles driving along the way with their hazards on, and also an ambulance with its hazards on .... Why would the police do something that is illegal? Just wondering... Any ideas?

Thank you God! NO ACCIDENTS TO REPORT until 700 am, the fog is thick in some areas, traffic is casual and building up slowly on those round about. Drive safely and get home in one piece to your love ones.

Please no hazard lights......

Please don't use hazards. I am always afraid of people who have their hazards on, I can never tell if that person is going straight, or is turning somewhere :(

Very dangerous to drive with hazards on. Can be difficult to know if driver has stopped, is indicating and so on.

Hazards off. This is what the police advise every year.

I know, and it gets discussed to death on QL every time there's fog. People never learn though, and I think it's irresponsible to post a thread advising people to do it.
