Britain's Contribution to our World
Aston Martins, Jeremy Clarkson, The Beatles, Churchill, David Beckham's right foot...there's no denying that Britain has done alot for this world...feel free to name the pros (Manchester United seems like a fitting example :D) and the cons (Spice girls...thanks alot) so that we can see the true value of what the Crown and all it's people have done for us!
On a "lighter" note (if you catch my drift), Peter Perfect.
Thank you Brits. Peter is saving one (US) business at a time!!!
Britain have given us so many thing BUT at the Cost of LONDON MUSEUM (KOHINOOR)...
Indians have modified English and given them back such as .....Teachers, IT consultants, Advisors, Astronauts, scientists, CEO's, Entrepreneurs, Lakshmi Mittal....etc
Gandhi a Brit??? Surely not! He was born in Kathiawar, India to Indian parents, so don't see how he could possibly be British. Yes, he studied Law in London, but apart from that he spent the rest of his life mostly in South Africa and India.
Briton just tried to claim it...
America is the world as such as briton has become...

Major contribution - Sending pilgrims to America and helping the building a new country.
Sending convicts to Australasia so they could produce legends such as Laver, Lilee and Warne.
Ruling Canada and helping them to stand on their own two feet as a nation seperate fro the USA.
I could go on, but tears are welling up in my eyes with pride...:(

I think it great you add it now! Shut the buggers up!
Probably not a good place to mention this, but Gandhi was a Brit.
Interesting to see as I predicted this has turned into a mud slinging session.
Interesting to see all these other nations who are just as good as us being jealous and then on the other hand just as bad but not admitting it!
So border issues between China and Tibet is a British problem? Border issues between KSA and UAE also a British problem?? Chechnya and Russia?? in Cyprus, Greece and Turkey?? etc etc
Yes I do agree with you.
What else you got?

I think you have me confused with someone who gives a sh1t.
You know what??? No matter how many people diss and slag off the Brits, we have a LOT to be proud of!
Michael Farraday - inventor of electricity and the first basic electric generated motor
Dottie - I think we have them stumped!!!!
mintus, having just googled Meucci, it seems that scholars outside Italy do not credit him with the invention of the telephone. Bell was the first to broadcast 'intelligible speech by electrical means'
Charles Babbage - invented the rudimentary calculator which led to the computer
jjj75 - Joseph Lister was a pioneer of antiseptic surgery. Graduated from London uni in arts and medicine, then was House Surgeon in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Worked with Louis Pasteur and developed the use of soaking surgical instruments in carbolic acid, which resulted in fewer infections, and therefore deaths.
Simpson pioneered the use of chloroform which was administered to Queen Victoria during childbirth, which subsequently became very popular and generally accepted.
Sorry to disagree mintus, but Alexander Graham Bell is recognised globally as the inventor of the telephone. Never heard of Meucci...............
Oh and totally agree jjj75 about sense of humour and the ability to laugh at ourselves!
Bram Stoker...grrrrr
do you mean politically correct or the computer??
Britain invented the PC brigade and all the crap that brings with it!
Bit below the belt - are you really from the Vatican city - if so what is your Nations contribution to the world and don't say the pope as that is up for debate!!!
also on a medical front - didn't joseph lister develop antiseptic - and I think that someone from Britain first understood DNA and how important it was
did anyone mention sense of humour - particularly the capacity to laugh at ourselves?? Not sure that in any other country the books that Bill Bryson (American) wrote about Britain and the British would be so well received (and yes he did write some positive things about Britain, but also some fairly critical ones too all dressed up in his humerous style)
Lets not forget the British Benefit System and National Health Service, that helps anyone and everyone who enters the UK....

Inventor of the telephone. Well sorry
In most of Europe, Antonio Santi Giuseppe Meucci is officially considered the inventor of the telephone, as established by the Enciclopedia Italiana di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti. In June 2002, the United States House of Representatives passed a symbolic bill officially recognizing Meucci as the foremost inventor of the telephone.
Dottie, yes they were both Germans. I was just making the point that in some ways Britain's contribution has been as a refuge for thinkers, rather than inventing things or writing stuff. Another example is Freud, who escaped to London from Nazi Austria.

ngourlay - correct me if I'm wrong, but surely Marx and Engels were German?? They only came to live in England as adults.
Probably THE most important discovery in medicine - PENICILLIN. Discovered by Sir Alexander Fleming, born in Ayrshire, Scotland. Saved countless millions of lives.
Pneumatic tyres - John Dunlop
Beta Blockers - Sir James Black, Nobel Prize for Medicine
Dolly the Sheep - Dr Ian Wilmut, first clone
Telephone - very definitely invented by Alexander Graham Bell, born in Edinburgh
Radar - Sir Robert Watson-Watt
Television - John Logie Baird
Anaesthetics - James Young Simpson
Oh, did I mention that all of the above are SCOTTISH?? British too of course, but for those of you who are confused, let me clarify. Britian means England, Scotland and Wales. Many people consider British to mean English, which is not the case at all. We're all British, but can also be English, Scottish or Welsh.

England has always been a refuge for the thinkers of Europe. Since the reformation, it's been a place where writing something is unlikely to land you in jail.

"Everything in this book may be wrong." Illusions: The Adventures of The Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach
The original thread was what Britian had done for the rest of the world. As I said at the time, I hoped it was not going to be a mud slinging session, but as usual it has!
As I said quite a few threads ago, it was the Arabs started slavery and I in no way supportive of slavery and I make no apologies for my fore fathers, that is history. Interesting though, it still goes on in other countries!
And just for your information, yes England did 'take over' and we did 'colonise' but we were not the only ones and we were not as cruel as some. I am not saying we were right! All I am saying, all the world was doing it at that time and some still are! Yes we did have 3/4 of the world for a long time. However, for all the harm we did we also did good and neither of those points can be denied.
"Everything in this book may be wrong." Illusions: The Adventures of The Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach
is obvious, but good for you!
Well sometimes one needs to raise their voice as people don't read the thread properly or chose the bits that they want to read. I do apologise if I offended you, that was not my intention, I just did not want to offend anybody by my history as I was taught it.
PLEASE LOOK AT WHAT I SAID....took religion and built churches in places where there was no religion or places of worship.
In other words, where there WAS NO RELIGION OR CHURCHES, so therfore we provided certain areas in the world with churches.
Sharia law is not In England.
We DO not have Sharia law in England. It is still in debate and according to people who work in Law, it never will be! Alexa the Missionaries from England took religion and built churches in places where there was no religion or places of worship. Not saying I agree with it, just poiting out historical facts.
Actually 'cuury' was a British invention in the time of the Raj, it was a way to feed the soldiers by hiding the smell of the rotten meat. Oh Yeah the Mosques, no problem with that; although I am tad p*ssed of that we cannot have chuch bells ringing but the call to prayer is still heard. Oh and by the way, we brought you churches. And I think, but you may shout me down, multi ethincity/culture, we experienced that way before 1066 when we had the French and Germans ruling us for quite a while. And please let me know what the additional law system is please.
Although based in India and Indian actors it is a 'British' film by the very fact it was directed by Danny Boyle.
Baldrick my hubby was born in Crumpsall lol but not Jew.
There are loads of FANTASTIC things about the UK and like any other country there is some bad stuff.

I do like romance, definitively.
ROMANCE LANGUAGES
Origin
During the Roman Empire, Latin contributed to the cohesion among all the different countries which were under the Roman power.
Latin had a strong unity and was a vehicle of communication among people from different places.
In the 5th century, the decline of the Roman Empire started. So, the relations among such different countries broke down. Then, diversity tendencies inside the Empire increased and popular Latin (spoken Latin) lost the unity that had had before. This would be the origin of the future Romance languages. This process was slow (it took some centuries) and gradual.
Diagram of evolution:
Popular Latin (spoken)
Pre-Romance (5th, 6th... centuries)
Romance languages (9th, 10th centuries).
Since the Romance languages have been consolidated, they have influenced themselves all over the years.

I thought this was supposed to be a debate!
Latin was the native language of the Romans, who spread it petty much throughout their empire. After the collapse of Rome, the language "died." Actually, Latin didn't really die, it just turned into Italian, French, Spanish, and several other languages. Or, more accurately, it turned into dozens of local dialects, which gradually merged to form those more familiar languages. This dialect formation had been going on for centuries. Indeed, educated Romans had often bemoaned the increasinly incomprehensible versions of Latin which were developing in the provinces. The dialects evolved through the absorbtion by the local Latin speakers of words and grammar from the conquered peoples. Although the barbarians who overran the empire were mostly unable to impose their own language on the, by then, romanized locals, they did effect numerous changes in the local form of Latin. As a result, by Charlemagne 's day (c. 800), the changes had become so great that in much of Europe the common people could no longer understand sermons in Church, albeit that they were being delivered in what was once Vulgar (low class) Latin As a result, the Emperor decreed that henceforth sermons were to be in the "lingua latina rustica" (the country-people's Latin). In other words, preach to the people in the language spoken in the area. It is durng this period that the first writings genuinely identifiable as French, and later Spanish, and still later Italian are to be found. Of the Romance (literally "the Roman's") languages of Western Europe, French moved furthest from Latin, Italian the least. Indeed, it is still possible to write something in Italian which is perfectly acceptable classical Latin, as the following poem demonstrates.jjjjjjj
The Germanic languages are a group of related languages that constitute a branch of the Indo-European (IE) language family. The common ancestor of all the languages in this branch is Proto-Germanic, spoken in approximately the mid-1st millennium BC in Iron Age northern Europe. Proto-Germanic, along with all of its descendants, is characterized by a number of unique linguistic features, most famously the consonant change known as Grimm's law. Early varieties of Germanic enter history with the Germanic peoples settled in northern Europe along the borders of the Roman Empire in the second century BC.
The most widely spoken Germanic languages are English and German, with approximately 310-375 million[1][2] and over 100 million[3] native speakers respectively. The group includes other major languages, such as Dutch with 23 million[4] and Afrikaans with over 6 million native speakers[5]; and the North Germanic languages including Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Icelandic, and Faroese with a combined total of about 20 million speakers.[6] The SIL
The Norman Invasion and Conquest of Britain in 1066 and the resulting French Court of William the Conqueror gave the Norwegian-Dutch influenced English a Norman-Parisian-French effect. From 1066 until about 1400, Latin, French, and English were spoken. English almost disappeared entirely into obscurity during this period by the French and Latin dominated court and government. However, in 1362, the Parliament opened with English as the language of choice, and the language was saved from extinction. Present-day English is approximately 50% Germanic (English and Scandinavian) and 50% Romance (French and Latin).

calamity, he doesn't mean 'German', he means 'Germanic'. It's 50% and 50%. Half Latin, half 'Germanic". Hence "Anglos" and "Saxons". If you know Latin you know 50% of the English language. If you know German, you know the other half. Which is a Spanish word in English? And even if you find one, it will still be of Latin origin, because Spanish is a 100 % Latin language. And that also applies to French.
so can we thank the english for english or not? :S
English is a West Germanic language which originated from the Anglo-Frisian dialects brought to Britain by Germanic settlers from various parts of what is now northwest Germany and the northern Netherlands. Initially, Old English was a diverse group of dialects, reflecting the varied origins of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms of England. One of these dialects, Late West Saxon, eventually came to dominate.
English is a mixture of quite a few languages but its roots are Roman (Latin), French and Spanish, very few of our 'words' are German! We also have words which originated in India and a few Arabic words.
HAHAHA, that's why it's called Anglo-Saxon. HAHAHA. So which Germanic tribe are the "Anglos"??
calamitypain, i was hoping not to get a reaction like that. i'm sorry it seems this way to you. i have great respect for the british and all they've done which i tried to show in my original post...this isn't a mud slinging exercise, i'm sure the brits will as usual come up on top in terms of pros and cons.
