Hi i will be moving to al khor later this year and was reafing this thread which was very enjoyable as you all sound so friendly, energetic and enthusiastic. Did things work out for the best for you all? I woul really love to hear from any of you with updates on how you it is going.i am starting there in september but am a little nervous as they have had a huge restructure so wonder how secure things really are there for teaching staff?i hope your feedback is positive but more importantly would like true and honest feedback, even the not so nice bits.but would rwally like to hear some good things too!hope to hear from someone soon.

Wish you a positive result for your interview.

Hi Everyone,

I have just noticed this thread largely due to the fact that I have an interview for a post at the school quite soon.

I also noticed that when you were all discussing various issues - you were all very excited, and enthusiastic etc etc....

I wonder, now it is a year down the line - how have you all settled?..Still enthusiastic, and excited?....regrets?.....disillusionments?..Or, is everything ............

'Hokey Dokey Pig in a Pokey?"

Would really appreciate any info you guys could give me asasp.....the TES threads are largely quite old, and very discouraging, unfortunately.....so any 'realtime' info would be fantastic....

Many Thanks in advance!

Lovely kids.

Most of them are polite and with fair motivation for learning. It becomes a pleasure to teach and put all energy on developing further teaching methods and resources.

Very well equipped apts and therefore ready for the job straight on without any worries.

Staff at school is great except of course as usual in all schools, some individuals feeling that just a Hello to other members of staff is too heavy to carry...

So all in all, quite impressed and happy for being part of a community with all facilities for families and having time to focus on and develop my competences.

It's for teaching resources (photocopies and different pupils' textbooks, videos...) to set different kind of teaching and assessment for different pupils' needs.

Thanks god, my personal reading is based on internet.

Concerning electronic items, it is not that cheap as far as I noticed through this forum (for instance, a laptop or hard drive is lot cheaper in London than Qatar).

My two main leisure activities in life being 'Cuisine' and 'Internet'.... So all in all, I prefer to play it safe...

In my case I am taking my books with me (about 40Kg on its own), add my PC (+ equipment) and some kitchen stuff with it and I am already reaching the 150kgs. accessories in Qatar are quite expensive, so I prefer to take as much basic facilities as I can to make myself comfortable.

Time is running fast...

25th of August is sooner that we might think........

Hope you're enjoying a nice break.

Just to remind you that if you’re intending to move your belongings by airfreight with IFS, it’s time to do it because IFS should have it at least one month before. I am giving them my boxes on the 28th July which is next week, hopefully.

Good luck and enjoy holidays

Hi all.

I got some quotes from Ellen at IFS today for airfright. She was very helpful and this is what I found out...

40 Kilos was about £120

60 kilos was about £150

with about £150 for customs and paperwork in Doha. However, this price quoted was due to me dropping stuff off at thier warehouse.

Great thing is you dont pay anything till you get there and from what I was told, school is given the cost which comes out of the allowance given and we cover the rest!

Nobody checks on the vaccinations of adults. The medical examination which every person who receives a residence permit must pass is a basic blood test for Aids and hepatitis and a chest xray for I presume TB. For your children is they are of school going age you will need to give a copy of their vaccination schedule at registration.

You guys seem to be paniking a little for no reason. I am a teacher in the secondary school and can assure you the HR department at the school are very ecxperienced, they bring many teachers like yourselves out here every year and will give you plenty of notice of anything you may need.

Also to AlING, you husband will be pleased to hear there are 2 golf courses close by Ras Laffan 10 minutes awayand Doha golf club approximately a 30 minute drive from the community

I might have more than 100kg, but the price for 100 kg is £400 by air delivered till AL KHOR without bothering about the customs paperwork and time wasting. It gives me an idea about the approximate price because I looked with other agencies and I haven't found cheaper yet.

By miss qatar newbie• 17 May 2009 21:04

so if you have 100 kgs, you have to send it by air and it costs £400??

suggested is the best I've seen so far. I talked to Ellen 3 days ago, she is very friendly. Apparently till 100 KGs, it's better to send it by air. Therefore I should give them my staff near Heathrow Airport at the end of July to receive it the 26th at AL KHOR. it will cost me around £400

Just trying to get an idea on the number of teachers coming out to AKIS with children.

Both my wife and I will be teaching at AKIS in Sept. We have 2 children (3 and 6 )

Really keen for our kids to settle in quickly and get to meet children around the same age. Would be interested in setting up some sort of after school playgroup so that the kids have something to do while mum and dad are at staff meetings etc....

Anyone in the same situation?

Just to put your mind at ease, I am a teacher at the school have been for the last 3 years and single teachers never have to share accommodation, they are usually given D apartments which are 2 bedrooms, teachers who are married or who have children get C apartments with 3 bedrooms.

Teachers are not given the option to take an allowancce and find accommodation outside the community and all of the apartments for teachers are fully furnished to a high standard. The situation is different for employees of the gas companies which is what Who.am.I was refering to.

I believe that we'll receive more informations concerning a lift to Al Khor and showing us locals around.

At the moment, my family will join me later, so I don't need a car as far as the bus is still running from Al Khor to Doha.

Apart from this, good idea Hels, we can agree on a sign to recognise each other. :-)

We are already 9 at the moment if my calculation is right...

So who is already teaching at the school?

When I was in Qatar, I did find it a little conservative-I wore a short sleeve top and my arms were getting "eye oggelled" at the mall! seriously, I thought people had never seen arms before! I wouldn't even try wearing a knee length skirt there but when I went to Dubai, there was no issue with that what so ever...

Miss Qatar, no, you don't have to bring anything. There's even a grocery inside the community. If you are single, you'd have to share a flat, with, let's say, fellow single teachers. But it all depends on the availability. If you want, you can ask for a housing allowance if you are under the company's sponsorship and live out of the community. Flats in Al Khor aren't exactly fully-furnished, but don't worry, you will receive a furnishing allowance. I like the place, hope you'll like it too!

it depends if they give u bachelor accomodation then in that flat there are only 2 rooms 1 kitchen 1 bathroom n 1 toilet.but i dont think so that they will give u bachelor accomodation cuz lots of teachers who are single they live in C type flats.which has 3 bedrooms 2 bathrooms 1 laundry 1 kitchen, drawin room n living room.

and as per ur concern about dress code u can wear anything u like.its not that much conservative :P

hi All!

I started this thread and have only just read it-thank you to all that replied to me, I will try and summarise everything about me in this 1 post...here goes!

I teach in worcestershire (near Birmingham) in a deprived area so i cant wait to get to some sunshine and grateful children.

I will be teaching reception in the primary school.

You can ship bikes over there...I have looked into some shipping countries and if you are desperate, let me know and I will forward the details to you.

I do LOVE a BBQ so I will be joining you on that one Susan! I am pakistani and found the dress code to be conservative (no sleevless or short skirts)

My flight will be about 26th Aug i think, this was the date that was being looked at by the admin lady.

Q: DO all the apartments (even for a single teacher) have 3 bedrooms? That seems like a big apartment for a single person!

I cant think of anything else to add besides-YYAAAYYY!!!

susan, drop me a msg and we should get together for lunch before we go so at least we will have a friendly face when we get there!

I'd like to bring my bike - although Qatar Airways haven't been too helpful about this so far!

Not sure what'd be most appropriate, the road or mountain bike. I've heard the main roads are pretty scary, but I'm guessing there must be a few quieter ones to explore. And the chaps in my interview said there are a few desert tracks to enjoy on the MTB.

Are you teaching out there too?

Hi Force1, thanks for the information it all sounds really positive, I'm glad that the teacher's apartments are together, i did wonder about that, and of course I am OVERJOYED about the prospect of bbqs :)

I intend on using the gym a lot especially if they also run classess because i do the STEP at home.

It really does sound like paradise, can't wait!!!! Thanks again for the information!!

Hey guys,

I live in Al Khor Community, in a Villa though.

Yes, don't worry there will be loads of opportunities for your to do you BBQ's :). The apartments have a lot of green/grass areas around them so I'm sure finding a place to do that won't be of much difficulty.

Another thing you guys might like, all the teachers apartments are like next to each other so your neighbor will most probably be another teacher from the school.

Though it is really far from Doha (main city), there are a couple of free buses which go down to the main shopping malls on the weekends. Though keeping a small car should not be too expensive. Petrol is pretty cheap out here. But you can survive without a car, there are shops (co-op's) within the compound and they're not too far to walk or even cycle.

The clubhouses are pretty nice aswell, free wifi (if you decide not to get internet at home).

They have restaurants, gyms, swimming pools and loads of facilities. The gym has aerobics lessons, martial arts lessons and a fitness trainer at all times. Infact, al Khor community is like a city/small town.

If going to Doha isn't a big issue, it is safe to say that Al Khor Community is the best compound in Doha.

Welcome, all of you! Hope you love Qatar as much as I do and hope to see you in Al Khor some day. We pop up to the school there on Sundays for the Anglican/Protestant church services there. It's a lovely community.

I think the fact that there are so many different nationalities will make the experience very interesting, I am Indian myself, born in the United Kingdom. I am looking forward to travelling and making some good friends! I am also looking forward to taking full advantage of te gym and swimming pool!!! :)

Your friends will really appreciate the lovely life in Qatar. Of course the culture is quite different, but still other advantages make it a nice place to live in. The weather is great: my little daughter and my wife will enjoy the swimming pool and buses going to Doha for free. I know that two teachers over there have Thai partners so my Thai wife will not be alone. The mixture of nationalities over there is wonderful.

Vive la belle vie

hi Susan,

I am teaching in Erith (Kent) at the moment.

Hi rebel,

Many thanks for your information. I've done a research before applying for the job, and I believe that it is the best opportunity to enjoy the teaching profession in a safe place and with lovely neighbours.

Hi Slim, it's nice to hear from you! I thought that it would be the school's responsibility for CRB, thanks for confirming that, where are you teaching at the moment?

Hi there,

I've been recruted for next academic year in secondary school as MFL HoD. Nice to hear from you.

Concerning the CRB, I believe the school will handle the case and therefore you will receive a copy.

About what I bring there will be as you intending to do: Clothes for me, my wife and little daughter, my resources and my guitar. That will be all.

for dress restrictions, as far as I know, it is really open as far as it is not too short up the knees or showing 'boops'. It is not Saudi Arabia and thanks god!!

Good luck

To be honest i'm just planning on bringing clothes, books and a few personal bits and pieces. Apparently the school can get quite cold because of the air con so will need to shop for cardies!!!

I'm still a bit confused about the dress restrictions, not too much to worry about for men I suppose!

From what I've read, it rarely rains (how strange will that be?) and it's always warm (even stranger!!!)

Been looking at bits and pieces on here. Main thoughts now are what we need to bring out, and what we can get rid of.

I'm thinking just bring clothes out. Oh, and my my bike. Do we really need anything else?!

And do we need any jumpers/coats? Does it ever get cold?!

They must do them over there, I'm sure its their responsibility!

I guess you've been spending a lot of time on this site too, it's really useful isn't it?

Yes, both teachers on the Isle of Wight.

No idea on the CRB checks, haven't been asked anything as yet!

yeah I thought it would be around then too, so much to sort out!!! Do they do a criminal check over there, I asked my school for a copy of mine but they said it wouldn't be valid for any other school. I'm teaching in Nottingham at the mo, Southwolds Community School, how about you? Are you both teachers?
