His Idea of Girlfriend Material

Wondering if he's as serious as you are? Here are some key characteristics guys look for in order to make sure you've got long-term potential.

By Simon Way

If you're used to hearing the line "I'm just not ready for a relationship," then please, keep reading. One important thing to bear in mind: Guys decide early on whether they're willing to forgo their freedom to become monogamous with you. To prove to him it's a sacrifice that he'll actually want to make, here are some things to keep in mind ...

Pick Up the Check
Relax, we're not saying you have to pony up for every meal. But if you reach for the bill, he'll know you're a self-sufficient chick who's not just looking for a free ride. "If a girl looks away or suddenly gets distracted when the check comes, I feel taken advantage of," says Sammy,* 25. "When a woman insists on picking up the occasional tab though, it shows she's interested in me as a person, not in what I can give her."

Have Friday-Night Plans
Sure, you want to see him, and he appreciates that. But when you bombard him with a steady stream of e-mails and text messages asking if he wants to do something this weekend, it's suffocating. What he needs to move forward with you is reassurance that you have your own life — one that doesn't revolve around him. "My girlfriend was the first woman I'd ever dated who repeatedly told me 'Already booked' because she had all this other stuff going on," says Amir, 29. "Soon, though, I realized that if I wanted to see her, I'd have to make plans in advance. That made me want her even more!"

Love His Guy Stuff
"My idea of long-term material is someone who will give me a high five when I've had a great day on the golf course or night at the poker table and who will laugh with me when I tell her about all the stupid stuff my friends did at our bar crawl," says Carlo, 31. Yes, it's asking a lot (we don't expect you to embrace our periodic strip-club jaunts), but guys don't want a girlfriend who's going to moan and groan about our manly activities or the company we keep.

Unleash Your Lust
When a guy looks ahead to his future with a girl, he wants to imagine crazy nights of wake-the-neighbors passion. So if you're already having fun in the bedroom, he knows he has a lot to look forward to in a relationship. "I dated this girl briefly who was great in every way, but when it came to sex, she was really inhibited. It always seemed like she was doing me some kind of favor," says Lucas, 29. "I knew it would just get worse as time went on, so I decided that I had to break it off."

She said to her dashing hunk

i have just read all of this whilst in london, england. its actually amusing. COunting the weeks till i come over in Aug.

do any of you lot actually meet up for drinks or fun at the beach? theres a lot of friendly banter, im sure i will get stuck in soon.

Oh and for guys who get moulded.. i think its a bit of give and take on both parts within the relationship, especially if you both feel that you could be partners forever. Sex is always an issue for pleasure, it starts off great, its keeping it going and fun thats the hard part. Also communication is important- the ability to share issues or thoughts whilst together can help build on things.

But at the same time- to each have small Independent lives with other friends and hobbies gives space and a sense of own life Fulfilment.

Intimidated by a girl who's too forward? Most of my gal pals have this problem. We have a swig of whisky and then confirm to ourselves that it's better this way. Who wants a wuss anyway? We want a man!!!

tallg - "A clever girl friend gives the guy what he wants while simultaneously accessing the other things. A very clever one even starts moulding the bloke into her ideal before he even realises it."

Darn it! I knew I was handling this all wrong from the beginning... I don't mould any bloke - if he's not what I'm looking for at the time I meet and get to know him, he stays a friend, no less. But that's good, isn't it? Anyway, too bad. I'm too old to change.

How can a man be intimidated by a lady in the bedroom ?

After all, its supposed to be a shared experience.

Let's have a joint QL poem effort. I'll start off a limerick for you all to complete;

...............

Pick Up the Check

- Only if he's suicidal.

Have Friday-Night Plans

- Too many separate Friday night plans and he's toast. And he better not be getting me that toaster for my birthday.

Love His Guy Stuff

- No problem PROVIDED I don't have to sit through a football match or whatever. he can go with his mates and bond. Time outs are good - for him and for me. Oh.. have you gals had clingy bfs before. Damn irritating!

Unleash Your Lust

"I dated this girl briefly who was great in every way, but when it came to sex, she was really inhibited. It always seemed like she was doing me some kind of favor," says Lucas, 29. "I knew it would just get worse as time went on, so I decided that I had to break it off."

- And herein is a clear example of a stupid boy. He's 29 but still a stupid boy. If she was inhibited, he should do something to change that, right? After all, he said "she was great in every way" - presumably cared for him and didn't sink his bank account by wild shopping sprees, etc. Never mind.. what's important is that he's true to himself. Honesty is the best policy.

These are hardly ground breaking revelations!

A clever girl friend gives the guy what he wants while simultaneously accessing the other things. A very clever one even starts moulding the bloke into her ideal before he even realises it.

When I finally did realise it was too late. When they finally do realise it is too late.
