Emotions from the Heart?

Inspired by Formatted Soul:

It just got me thinking, do emotions really come from the heart? or is it just a brain thing? If you replace your heart will u feel someone else's emotions? Will you not love the same people? I mean can a HEART feel emotions? A heart is something that pumps your blood and purifies the blood (gosh i cant get into any more details about heart as i didnt pay much attention in school) So then folks what are your views about this

Does the heart generate feelings, emotions, love, hate, jealously etc?

By anonymous• 21 Mar 2009 11:33

Sure Smoke, we've all felt that. But yeah, the heart beating faster etc, is triggered by signals from the brain.

And we're so used to associating the heart with romance that we're not going to start saying we're "brain broken". It just doesn't sound right!

yes we do know better now...however havent u ever got this sudden sinking feeling like something is actually hurting in your heart area when u get some bad news or u know you have lost someone forever? Could it be a brain signal, that causes your heart to beat faster or slower? Why does the heart beat faster when your with someone you love, or when you get really angry?

Ok well then...

The heart doesn't have feelings. The belief that the heart has feelings goes way back to ancient times, before we were capable of studying and understanding the brain.

You'll find references in the mythology of various cultures, as well as in early philosophy and science.

But now we know better :-P

ghazalz thats what i'm trying to figure out, how does one know that one's heart is happy or sad? i mean who invented this thing of loving with the heart? Why are heart symbols associated with love? Why is it when someone dies, or we break up with a loved one we say things like "heart" broken? If its all about the brain then let us be brain broken :P

In Urdu language, there is a quotable verse,

'Keep your heart my love! Guarded by brain

but I wish, leave it sometimes liberated'

smoke!...I know all the wise decisions belong to

the brain...but why joyous and guilty feelings

make one’s heart happy or sad?

another heart will change something ... You can't see people without eyes, you can't talk to them without your tongue or touch them without your hands ...

The brain got something to do with it, your memory ... you know that you love this person because whenever you will see them you will recognize them ... you will hate the others for the same reason ...

The heart is involved, but after the brain if I can say something like that ... the strange thing, you don't need sometimes to think about it to hate or love someone ... and that comes directly from the heart but again ... you got that impression when you meet someone, see that person or shake hands with them to get that feeling so again the brain is involved.

Anyway, who said that talking about most two craziest things ever a human had would be that easy? Those two are always got conflicts with each other and oppose each others and ... there is always time for peace even during the war ...

Anyway, I just had my coffee right now ... they offer me this ... french something coffee so it's not my fault if you will find what i'm saying unexplainable ...

How are you doing Smoke buddy? Long time no see, but still did not prevent you from calling my eggshell you .. you ... just remind me to grab that tail next time ....

Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment. (Gautama Buddha)

Arien, OMG!! Yes, just read the news about Natasha Richardson! :-0

I read yesterday's news about the skiing accident - internal head injuries, not visible.

/Mine was also internal but was blessed to have the swelling outside my brain - initial scans were not clear. If it had been inside my skull, they'd have to operate and that would probably cause more trouble. A&E team kept me for observation for a while, family and friends were praying at the crucial time when not out of the woods yet.

They say things like "Everytime i see you, my heart skips a beat" If the heart can indeed skip a beat when you see someone you love, then that means the heart has a mind of its own eh? and as such then the heart knows when to send such chemical signals to the brains..according to FS.

I know its the brain...but the brain receives signals through the nerves...when your heart skips a beat...you will feel that in the brain....only if you get the right signals through the nerves from heart...then only the chemical reaction takes place and produces emotions like happy...sad..sensu...perve...etc etc...LOOOOL

Btw, a major wallop to the head is NOT recommended. It is VERY dangerous - like Liam Neeson's wife in the skiing accident recently. Hope she recovers.

Logic and emotions - all in the mind.

When I had a car accident in April 2007, my memory was wiped out. Took a lot of effort (because I went back to work after 2 weeks even though the hospital would give me a much longer medical leave) but I couldn't leave things in my colleagues' hands for too long - upset clients - who knew I was on medical leave and held back... but barely.

Anyway, I regained memory of everything that was important to me - immediate family, close friends, work and studies. Went back to work asap because I was responsible for the branch I was running for my firm but that also turned out to be a blessing as pushing myself to work and think, moved my brain along. My bosses and colleagues at that time were as understanding and as helpful as they could be, under the circumstances. I was more or less on my own as they were too busy but I managed. They let me take my annual leave half day every day till I could handle the main rush hour traffic again.

Emotionally, I chose to dig up positive emotions only and did not dig up the past emotional trauma (eg. ex-bf) which dragged me down. The ex-bf that I was emotionally attached to for so many years (and basically wasting my life on), I could let go easily. I think his nose is out of joint a bit. But hey.. when I walk, I don't look back. He has had more than numerous chances so it's just too bad. But anyway, I now only remember the new emotions being built up. This is a blessing because I see things clearly.

Long postie - and won't remember what I said or where I said this once I move on. This is also good in the sense that I don't clutter up my mind. Where there is information overload, it's good to delete delete delete.

Of course a heart does not feel emotions. It is your brain. It's obviously linked to something in the past where people believed your heart was the life force or something.

Here's a site that has come up with a few historic explanations.
