QAWS :: Delilah the unofficial QL mascot!!

Chelsea
By Chelsea

As many of you long-term QLer's may remember, Delilah was the unofficial QL mascot for quite a while! A beautiful dog with a badly injured leg, she is a fantastic family pet. Unfortunately, she is back up for adoption.

Almost 2 years ago, Delilah was taken into the QAWS shelter after she had been found by a QLer. She became the QL mascot after a huge number of QLers donated money and food to help her out. Because of her injury and her permanent limp, it took a while to find a family for her. Unfortunately, that family decided they didn't have time for a dog and so she was returned to QAWS.

After several more months, she was rehomed again, along with a saluki mix called Wacky (found in Wakrah!!). Everyone thought she would be with them forever.

We lost touch with the new owners but 3 months ago we had
a phone call to say that 2 dogs had been taken into the vets to be euthanised and could we take them. And yes, they were Delilah and Wacky. The family were leaving the country and didn't want to take them. Instead of asking for help, or rehoming them, they were going to put them to sleep.

So they were up for adoption again...

They were placed in a foster home, who then couldn't keep them any longer. They were then seperated and sent to 2 different foster homes - where Delilah escaped 3 times and Wacky got hit by a car. They were reunited in a third foster home and then after another few weeks - were rehomed!

They were then bought into our boarding kennels last week, whilst the new owner went away. Unfortunately we've just been told that the owners (now the third family for Delilah) don't want them back.

So once again... They are looking for a new home. In almost 2 years, Delilah has been in and out of QAWS, vets, boarding kennels and foster homes. Wacky has been tagging along with her for the last 12 months and is a fantastic dog too.

We are now looking for a "forever family" for both of them to spend the rest if their lives in. Please note - we are NOT looking for a foster home, anyone interested has to be prepared to take them with them, no matter where in the world they go.

These dogs have had a hard life - but are so loving and none of this has been down to anything they've done. They are both vaccinated and neutered and are very healthy. They have been with other dogs, children and babies and there hasn't been a single report of bad behaviour from either of them!

Delilah is a 2 1/2 year old brown/white female Doha Special and Wacky is a 2 1/2 year old brown male Saluki mix.

If anyone is interested in giving these beautiful, friendly, house-trained dogs a home, please call 539 6074 to meet them at the QAWS shelter.

chelsea - you'll have to go through them all with a few tubs of tippex and a black marker, changing all the dates so it can be used as a 2010 calendar!

Hi Chelsea

I believe there will be a ball in Oct 2009 to help raise funds for QAWS. Should we not start spreading the word now to see how people can help and to get them to spread the word as well. Maybe in that way people may come up with some great ideas.

Just a thought.

Hehe - it's great to hear you're enjoying your calendar as much as we all are! Please spread the word to anyone that doesn't have one that they're now down to QR10 each. We still have a few boxes left and as it's now April it's hard to sell them but we don't want to throw them away!!

I'm still trying to think of a feasible way to adopt Dawn the Donkey and take her back to the UK. Her photo on this month's calendar page makes me smile every time I see it!

Wacky and Delilah are fantastic dogs, we had them at the clinic for a while. They are gentle, good natured and quiet and have excellent manners, unlike my greyhound who jumps up and knocks you over. I would have taken them but I have a cat. I would recommend these two to anyone looking for a permanent pet and i can't see why they keep coming back. I have Oscar (Lucky) from QAWS who was a boomerang dog as they called him, because he kept coming back. I don't understand how anyone could have sent him back, he hasn't put a paw wrong with us in 15 months. He is a very important member of our family and will travel with us wherever we go, hopefully these two will find their soulmates too.

Hi delgendy

Your dog is called a Rhodesian Ridgeback and that is where I was born and raised .. Rhodesia (which is now called Zimbabwe). They were originally used for hunting lion because they are good at climbing trees.

They are lovely dogs.

it really breaks my heart when i feel that people are traeting dogs as accessories for their homes or gardens, actually if they know how much happiness could this dog brings to his/her life, they wouldn't have thought about it.... i am alreday a volunteer at your shelter Chelsea, and am always coming to take dogs for a walk and i already have my own ridgeback beautiful dog...i am glad u r here in doha, as people like you will add alot....

best of luck and i will circulate this add

Hi Chelsea - I was there yesterday looking to see how I can volunteer. I would LOVE to have a big place and take in as many animals as I can but unfortunately I only live in an apartment and we aren't allowed pets. It breaks my heart but I am sure I will be able to help in other ways.

There is so much money in this country and it is a pity that very little goes into your shelter or helping abandoned and suffering animals.

We've named her Ebony - she's still with us but hopefully we'll find her a home soon!

its so sad to know how people think they can easily get rid of their pets by just either abandoning them on the streets or by taking them to the vet to put them to sleep....if a person isnt capable to handle, love and care an animal..why the heck do they even bother to adopt 1?? they aint an decoration for ur home for heavens sake!

thanks to QAWS they are always so helpful. Recently i had to give them a cat whose owner was about to abandon her..unfortunately i couldnt find her a home yet...but hoping soon she does :)
