Kittens, anyone???

Our cat had kittens and they are looking for a home. they are just the cutest funniest little things right now...there are 4 tabby looking. I can send a photo if interested. my husband can't take care of them all, and we certainly don't want to put then in the street. They are free and just need good loving people. Cats give you unconditional love..and are always there for you and awesome for kids. mine got thier first one this year and are just in love with her!!

if interested, let me know!! :-)

My husband and I bathed one of our cats many years ago on a regular basis. But I do not recommend this because they may scratch.

...

Unless the cat is covered with dirt, why would you bathe it? Cats are generally very clean animals and they constantly groom themselves. Generally, they hate water. But, rarely do they need humans to help them with their bath.

...

The sound of running water may frighten them and they will try to climb out of the sink. Why not brush them? Shedding is the major problem in hot weather. A good daily brushing will control hair shedding and they will like the massaging action. Also, after brushing them with a small steel pet brush made especially for cat hair, moisten a towel and pet them with the damp towel. Or pet them with a rubber glove on your hand. This will also rid them of loose hair...

...

Good luck.

What is the process for a pet passport? Is there a specific type? I've heard some pet passports are worthless.

Thanks,

Cats can play with a piece of string or thread. Try hanging a piece of string or thread over the cats head and see its reaction. Most cats behave the same if you do this. Its quite funny!

Chen, there are some lovely cats and kittens for adoption at the Veterinary Surgery (www.dohavets.com, 436-7187). They are located on Al Rayyan Road, between C-Ring and B-Ring.

Life is too short not to share it with cats! I'll see if I can get some pictures posted for you.

The Qatar Veterinary Surgery (www.dohavets.com, behind Barbie on Al Rayyan) has a lot of cats and kittens for adoption at the moment (there are some darling puppies and dogs too). Unfortunately a number of pet owners are intimidated by the thought of bringing their pets back home, and so leave them behind. There are a few in particular that I am trying to sneak into my own home ; )

I've been involved with the Veterinary Surgery since I arrived in Qatar in September 2007. They've helped me with all of the stray kittens that somehow found my garden, with vaccinations and support as I've tried to rehome them. I can't recommend them highly enough as they are really attentive and kind, gentle with the animals and always there with a kind shoulder for those going through pet trauma.

Their number is 436-7187, if you are really interested in adopting they are a great place to go (as is QAWS- but your first stop after should be a vets just to get your new family member checked out).

Good luck!

My parents (without my premission) had one of my cats declawed because she would scratch the furniture, my newest one is just not a scratcher. She was a year old when I got her and I've had her for about 4 months now and she just doesn't use her claws (bites like a fiend though). My favourite method to stop scratching or any bad behaviour in kitties is a spray bottle of water (I intend to use this method on my children some day :P). It didn't work on my first cat though cause she's a freak who enjoyed it.

thanks.. i used to have a cat.. what i just didn't buy for her for scratching.. how i just didn't teach her .. no way.. she makes couple of scratches on this mat (just to show that she knows what i expect from her), and then proceed straight away to her favorite corner of favorite couch.. :):)

I use to re-upholster this particular corner every 2-3 months.. :)

You can trim cat claws with your own finger nail clippers, get the vet to show you how much is safe to remove - you don't want to hit the nerve or cause bleeding. That will minimize the amount of scratching damage that can be done. You can also get a sisal or coconut mat (the kind of welcome mat you have outside your door) - cats love these because they're tough and they can really get "stuck into" them. I have one on a board attached to a wall so they can stretch and scratch at the same time.

Why not have all the kittens vaccinated and then charge a fee to cover the costs. Although QAWS do NOT believe in selling animals - asking a new owner to cover the cost spent on vaccinations is fair enough.

Animals that are free are rehomed on a whim, purely because they don't have to spend any money. People who want free animals, usually then don't want to spend money on vaccinations, neutering, relocating their pet when they leave... And 9 times out of 10 they end up at the QAWS Shelter as an 8 month old pregnant, ill cat.

All I'm saying is please be careful who you rehome them to - make sure they are aware of all the costs involved and that they are planning to take them with them when they leave Qatar!

Good luck with finding them homes - we have over 20 at the shelter at the moment!

LOVELy advice...let them go when they are old enough that they can care for themselves...

do you realize just HOW many more cats that will end up with in a year???? If they are spayed or neutered at least they can't make more cats.

Plus, putting them out to fend for themselves is MUCH worse than being kind enough to spay them. There they are barely getting enough to eat, are victims of people who abuse animals for fun, or get hit by cars. Please think before you post....

I take my animals to the veterinary surgery behind Barbie Saloon - I've been very happy with both vets that I've dealt with there.

I believe the Animal Resource Dept has competent doctors, but they don't always speak English and I like to know exactly what's going on with my "babies".

I would take them to place behind Barbie Saloon, I think it's called the Veterenary Surgery? I wouldn't take her just yet, but keep an eye on her, you'll know if she goes into heat.

Good you told me this Gypsy.. mine is coming up to just over 3 months now.. better get it spayed

soon. Where should I take her to the Vets or to this place that marycatherine has mentioned?

Been a bit unlucky with our kitten that we adopted from QAWS as it has some kind of ring around her nose.. Now all the kids me and the Mrs have ringwom rash all over our body.. Already spent a lot of money on her with a few visits to the Vets..

Just a bit of advice. When or if you do adopt make sure that you are prepared for any health problems with the kittens..

Speaking of Cats here and getting pregnant, has anyone else who has had a kitten here noticed that they go into heat earlier then normal. I've had two kittens now that have gone into heat at 4 or 5 months, rather then 6.

Animals do surprisingly well in transit. One of the first things we did when we adopted our "foundling" kitten was to get all her shots and have the vet put the record in a "passport." She's now good to go to the US whn we leave in a few years.

Sorry, I don't think my post was mean - it was constructive advice and information and to the point. The original posting did not mention the circumstances and unfortunately, most of us here at QL aren't mind readers. The phrase "we certainly don't want to put them in the street" was not conducive to a positive reaction by any reader as it implied that this was the alternative to finding them new homes.

May I respectfully suggest that you read your messages carefully a few times before hitting the submit button - oftentimes (myself included) we hit the button and then after reading the posting think "someone might take that in a way we never intended" - there is an edit function (thank goodness because otherwise I'd get myself in more hot water than I usually do) that allows you to amend your posts.

I regret if you took my posting as an attack - it was not meant to be.

They won't be alone, they'll have each other. I've travelled with my animals, they get along fine. If you do decide to take them, I highly recommend you fly KLM.

They have a pet hotel in Schipol Airport where the cats will be looked at by a vet, their cage cleaned (if needed) and access to food water and a litter box. KLM ground staff are also very good with nervous "mothers" like ourselves by double checking that the animals are OK and on board.

At the information desk in Schipol they will even put you in touch with the pet hotel to ask how the babies are doing.

The lady is offering kittens, not asking on how to extinct the poor animals...

I know humans are a superior race in comparison to other mammels, but it gives us no right to descide on the faith of any other animal races.

You don't like them, let them go when they are old enough, they will find a way to live, or someone to take care of them, they have something called animal instinct. But don't take action that you wouldn't like anyone doing to you.

Omar K

This is just torturing me. We would love to have a kitten, or adopt one from Qaws, but we worry about how to get them back to the US when we leave. I don't want them to be alone on a plane in the cargo hold, and I don't want them in the cabin with us meowing for 17 hours. That would just kill me. We don't want to have to give them back to Qaws or to another expat and worry about them being let out to roam the streets. Oh well...

you all don't need to be so creul and mean. We had planned to take her in as she was too young when we first got her..then about 2 months later when we had an appt. she got out once..and it happened.

Irresponsible, maybe, but do you all ever have a "irresponsible" moment!? never got into the heat of the moment and forgot to protect yourself?? Maybe not any of you since you can right this crap on here...but I am sure at times in your life things have happened..so be kind or just keep the words to yourself.

I asked if anyone wanted a kitten, I didn't ask to be harrassed. if nothing else I will fly them the the US...just thought maybe there would be someone there that would like a free pet, especially someone that has no one else to come home to.

When the babies are weaned, take Mom to the Government's Animal Resource department near the airport. They will spay her for free.

Advise any one who takes a kitten to do the same, get the cat spayed or neutered (when it is old enough) there for free - stop the endless cycle of cats, propogating more cats. One female cat can have 4 - 5 litters a year, if you average out 4 kittens/litter that's up to 20 cats - this calculation does not take into account the litters the kittens will start having during the same time period.

You love your cat, get her spayed. You care about the kittens, make sure they get neutered too.

Just a question for you: when you can't get of your funny cute kittens that you so irresponsibly let your cat have, what are you going to do with them if you don't put them in the street??

I think you'll find that getting your own cat to the vet might have been a wise decision considering the fact that anyone who wants a pet (and those who don't) are busy trying to clean up the detrius of starving strays..you know those kittens that have ceased to be funny and cute?..and therefore erm, are out on the street.
