Please spare the children...

A eleven-year old school girl Shanno Khan in north Delhi, who went into a coma after being beaten and asked to stand under the Sun for two hours by her teacher as punishment for not being able to recite the alphabets, has died. Shanno was on a life support system since Wednesday.
Corporal punishment is illegal in India but some teachers continue to mete out such punishment in some schools. Most teachers get away with a mild warning when they are taken to task.
As punishment, Shanno was apparently made to stand in a pose where the child was asked to stand in a position with her hands passing between the legs to hold her ears. Most children are familiar with this punishment which is called “Murga.” But on top of that a brick was placed on her back and she was left in the scorching heat of the summer Sun.
The police took 48 hours to file the case against the teacher, The teacher has since been arrested and booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder after the student’s death. The teacher was suspended along with the principal of the school. In her statement, the teacher has sought to rubbish the story.

Asked in what way he would like the teacher to be punished, The child’s said: “I have lost my child. I want strong action against the teacher.” He wonders how his other two daughters who study in the same school would be able to continue their studies in the school where the abusive behavior of a teacher was responsible for the death of their sister.

How long will this go on? When will we learn from our past mistakes? Can we say that we have seen the last of such cases in India? Or, will it take the lives of more children before we put a stop to this kind of inhuman punishment?

Spare the rod and spare the child..

Well, sadly such incident is very common in Asia. Discipline & torture are very different things. Teachers must react according to the situation with their students.

Small issues can be solved by giving resonable punishments while big issues can be resolved by talking with parents & principal. Let principal handle big issues by throwing such unmannered & trouble making students from their schools/colleges.

But giving fatal punishment is not allowed at all. Teachers are also parents too so they must keep their children in their minds b4 giving harsh punishments to small innocent children who are quiet vulnerable to such punishments.

I remember my Biology teacher who used to have pointed nails like witches and pinch inner arms of whoever is not attentive in class....Thanks to her I hate Biology even today! My fav subject was Geography just because of a darling sister (nun) whom we all adored so much..

Discipline is one thing, but this was torture!

How very sad. I hope that the teacher receives the severest of punishments and is never allowed to set foot in a classroom again.

In the modern age of teaching method; there is no place for such punishments;

Infact each individual child should be treated differently depending on their skills, adaptability and competency levels.

I faced similar situation at my early stage of schooling But Alhamdullilah, my kids are far away from such attrocities and idiotic ways of preaching.

May Allah give strength and patience to Shanoo's parents to bear such an irreparable loss.....Aameen

I don't know who still believes in this as a treatment or a solution. Don't talk to me about raising good students in the schools, if these kids did not come with proper morals and ethics from their own home, then why do you think that you can do what the parents could not?

Dang, up to now i still remember that poor guy in my school when we were just at the first class in primary school. He could not say the alphabets or read Arabic properly because he is none Arabic. The teacher asked the two guys sitting in the front to hold his hands, while he was smacking his behind with his stick while the poor kid was screaming for mercy :(

It was really too much, strange that most of the other kids were laughing their aZZes off, some were petrified while i was shedding tears.

Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment. (Gautama Buddha)

Discipline is a must in schools.

However, whether there is a need for corporal punishment is open to debate. Many parents would still agree to this.

The government needs to address this issue with clear guidelines and also legislation to protect the children. In addition, teachers need to be trained in "modern" methods of teaching and child discipline.

Archaic ideas that put children at risk..

The educational authorities need to legislate and also ensure that teachers are properly trained.

i'd like to know that this teacher is now in jail, because she is a shame to the teaching profession.

No one has any right to beat a child. They beat the child, because the child does not retaliate. The child is helpless. The child is at their mercy. Some parents and teachers take advantage of this and sadistically take out their own frustrations on the children. They find faults in them and beat…. this is inhuman.

In any civilized society such practices should be punished to the maximum.. The child needs love, care and proper guidance....no beating and no harsh words…. A child does not come into the world just to learn things and become a rocket scientist overnight….

sometimes these jerks thinks more that a child...irresponsible individual...this teacher should be hang with only the big toes lying at ground so that this teacher may realize what punishment he or she gave to that little one...at least before he or she dies....

i maybe be a bit drastic...but for me, until law is raw, no one will abide....

How can a teacher be so inhuman? This is sheer atrocity.May god give the parents the courage to cope up with the loss of their kid.

this teacher should be stoned to death!

obviously he/she wouldnt feel the gravity the punishment he/she gave the student if she be punished the same way... or better yet, punish his/her kids the same way!

I had same experience in high school and mind you I was on my 4th year, the teacher slapped my right shoulder with stick.... WHY??? Because there was a piece of crumpled paper under my chair!!! which is apparently NOT MINE!!!! So I left her class and went straight to the Guidance Counselor's office, but knowing that they wont do anything to her, I told my mom....and she GOT IT FROM MY MOM THE NEXT DAY!!!!

and eliminated. Children should be protected, there are other means of disciplining a child without putting the child's life in danger.

It makes us feel that we are still so backward and uncivilsed! I heard this news last night on TV.

Totally unacceptable behaviour from an irresponsible teacher (MANJU RATHI, still absconding) and should be Punished for such inhuman punishment to a small child.
