Any tips for a Brit coming to Qatar - need to know where is good for a Brit to live and to educate kids of Reception age. Working in area of airport don't mind commuting to work but don't want the kids travelling too far to school. Thanks
If you are working at the airport, DO NOT consider Al Khor school as it is not even in Doha and would take possibly 2 hours travel time each way. that's just ridiculous, I don't think that poster noticed where you said you would be working. I would consider living in Al Waab area, maybe one of the Alfardan compounds or the Beverly Hill compounds. Good schools are nearby such as Park house or Newton British.
One more thing, the Reception teacher is magnificant! I think your child would enjoy being in her class very much. She is also very dedicated and takes her work with the children very seriously.
Firstly, welcome to Doha, and I hope that you and your family enjoy living here.
I would urge you not to overlook the new Newton British School. It opened last year in al Waab, and so far, I have been quite pleased with it. The class sizes are small, staff and teachers are very friendly, and they follow the British Curriculum. You may wish to ask other parents about it as well, just to get a complete picture, but again, I would encourage you to consider it seriously.
Just been helping a mate find places for his kids. Most Schools are chocka. They have even closed applications. Your best bet would be applying for schools, DESS, DH, PHS, DMBS and then hoping you get pushed to the top of the waiting list as you are British. Then apply for Nurserys or Cedars.
Look at Al Khor International school there are at least 12 Expats going out this summer a number with small children! I will be teaching in the Primary and so impressed am I, that we are taking our son to do his GCSE's there. AL khor community is about 35 mins drive or a free bus ride from Doha.....good luck.
