Now you must register and recored you Qatar ID to enter any bar??? Good way to intimdate and harrass consumers of alcolhol.

Qatar always going backwards in real development but building big buildings will solve all.

The longer I stay here the more I realize I should leave.

Yes - the point is it is another step in that direction. They are recording more and more all the time. This night club thing in itself is not such a big deal.

It is the fact that since I have been here their is an increased attempt to monitor and control.

BTW Qatari was exempt so it is not aimed at them.

But they're not recording all that stuff - they're just recording the fact that you were in a bar/nightclub.

It is not about them recording your details - they know my details. It is about them recording your activities. Where you go and when.

Is it OK if they tell you you must record when you leave your house? When you arrive at work?

When you leave work?

When you enter the mall?

When you leave the mall?

So they know your every move?

Some say if you have nothing to hide than who cares???

This is another step out onto that slippery slope.

Of course not.... That is a very simplistic approach that is often parrotted in this forum.

I wrote "The longer I stay here the more I realize I should leave."

Which indicates an evaluation process of which this particular issue is only one part.

1) Are the benefits gained here worth the sacrifices, hassles, short comings, etc??

2) Is the situation getting better, remaining constant or getting worse??

Neither of these are easy questions for most people to answer as they are quite complex and must take many issues into account.

Sometimes I think things are moving ahead, however I believe this new rule is a step backwards.

By emgee• 28 May 2009 14:25

I have two comments:

1) UKEngQatar- there is an unwritten rule that must be obeyed- only gay men and male models can wear speedo's and if you like Guiness I'm guessing maybe you have a little spread!

2) Tallg- I hope they ask me for my ID to prove 21, as I'm somehwat more aged than that- I know, in my dreams......

By cynbob• 28 May 2009 14:16

These days, we ARE being monitored. Cameras; showing id's; even earning points here on QL are indicators that we're being watched/monitored.

I'm amused and amazed, really, how I can get on Ebay and search for certain things to purchase/bid on when, all of a sudden, there's this email notice saying, "Hi Cynbob, thought you might be interested in these items." They are tracking my every hit and purchase. Heck, they probably know me better than I know myself!

Crazy, huh?

I don't see why I should be concerned about giving my ID and signing to enter a bar.

The only reasons I could see that that they would do this is might be:

Damage/misbehavior in the bar - they'll know who was there.

Drink driving - if you are in an accident on your way home from a bar, they will know you were there.

Either way, it doesn't concern me.

Other countries put video cameras at the doors to bars and record who enter with, and who you exit with, and this is frequently used in sexual assault cases.

They take your ID - Record your name, ID Number and then ask you to sign. Of course the date and place is recorded as well.

It was both Orions & Sports Bar.

The line at the sports bar was so long due to all the confusion

An occasional gift such as that will go unnoticed but if you like to entertain friends regularly such as throwing parties your account will show a high alcohol consumption. It is not paranioa - it is called privacy.

Now, the scanning/recording of id's at clubs is probably accurate!

If they were THAT worried about you giving alcohol to other people they wouldn't give such ludicrously high monthly allowances to spend at QDC. I could drown the whole of Qatar in several foot of Guinness with the amount I'm allowed to buy! It's ridiculous.
