Speed up your torrent downloads the easy way.

Good Morning good citizens of QLville. Today I, your KING, shall tell you a little something something on how to make good use of the recent ADSL speed upgrade that Q-tel has graced us with, and use this to speed up that snail speed of 12kb to 25kb download speed to upto 35kb to 150kb (1mb adsl) or even upto 250kb (2mb adsl) speeds :)

What you need to know: The download speed of your torrent file first of all, depends on the number of people seeding (sharing) that file. Logically more people sharing, the faster you'll get the file. When you search for files always see that the ratio of seeders is more or equal to the number of leechers. You cannot expect to get 50kb download speed even with a 2mb connection on a 100mb file that just 5 people are sharing and 50 people are leeching.

So basic facts more seeders = faster downloading.

Now enough of this bullcrap, lets just get on with the speedy uping :p

Smokey boy here does just 2 things and according to me thats all your going to need. Two simple steps, well one's not all that simple, but i'll try to keep it as simple as possible for those of you who dont know what I'm talking about.

STEP Uno. This step varies from user to user coz it involves the "program" you use to download your torrent files. Whatever your program is, I don’t care, but here is what you need to do. Go to your tools/preferences/settings etc and look for the connection setting. You should set your downloading to 0 (0 means unlimited) and if you’re using a 1mb/2mb connection set the upload limit to 12kb. I think that’s like more than enough of uploading you can do while downloading a file and not feel morally guilty of being just a leecher LOL. Hey Q-tel isn’t giving us the best uploading speeds either.

STEP Two: Now this is the tricky part of it and I’m not going to go into technical details as to what this is and how it works etc, I will however give you a lay mans idea of what we are about to do.
Transmission Control Protocol, most of us will recognize this word when seen like TCP/IP. Generally Microsoft limits our TCP connections to 10, from what I read the reason for this is to limit viruses from connecting to different other Ip addresses using your internet at a rapid speed. So what do we do about it? WE use this program http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads
After you’re done downloading that run it, it will open up a dos window asking if you want to change the no. of your tcp connection blah blah, you just say OK and set the new limit to anywhere between 50 to 100. I recommend using 80 as its not too high and still gives you a good download rate for your torrents. Remember MORE is not always good. So set it to 80. Please note that while the changes are taking place you’ll get a pop up on ur screen asking u to insert your windows cd coz your tcp/ip file has been modified, DO NOT PANIC, just click CANCEL. You don’t have to worry about going wrong coz this prog. Automatically makes you a backup of your original tcp/ip file. Restart your computer and viola, your good to go.

A little note I’d like to add here is that these steps is only for Windows XP users, guys who are using Vista have nothing to worry about as all this is taken care of by Vista so chill. I use vista on my laptop at home and I get speeds upto 150 to 230kb on a 350mb file :)

just watch this video it will help you to increase your Bittorrent speed.....cheers,

This actually all depends on the speed of your computer for these settings. I would advise you to look over these settings and choose what is best for you.

Newsgroups...learn about 'em and never go back ;-) I max my now 4mb connection out at ~495Kb almost instantly. No waiting for seeders/peers. Plus you don't have to worry about your ratio ;-)

LOL King, i never use all those other features i just search mininova or other websites and use it to download :p i like it coz there are many options in settings to play with.

about Windows Firewall? Just turn it off ...

Smoke, I've downloaded that one [new version of Azureus right?] The first thing he gave me while using the search was a runtime error that kept on coming every now and then ...

I uninstalled it immediately, will use my favorite uTorrent only :)

But how to set the exceptions for the torrent applications?

when the command prompt shows you can ignore the default 50 and then enter 80 and confirm it ... about the rest, i got no idea ... maybe it has something to do with your torrent client ...

Did everything suggested but my downloads are still quite slow. IvLord would only let me set number of TCP connections to 50. Using utorrent to download from the bittorent site. Seeds are 219(1402)peers are 70(1265) and average download speed is 60 kb/s. Any suggestions?

I think i understand the concept of port forwarding, its to dedicate a special port no. for incoming/outgoing connection and tell the router to use that specific port no. instead for downloading/uploading right? Which is why i'm asking if it can or should be done with the crappy qtel model (not wi-fi) coz i dont think there is this option in the speedtouch set up atleast i havent seen it. correct me if i'm wrong.

Smoke - on the speedtouch set up port forwarding is under Toolbox->Game & Application Sharing

Select 'Assign a game or application to a local network device' and select bittorrent from the list and assign it to your device. Or if you have a different bittorrent client, you may need to create your own application using the link.

whenever there is a firewall [software or hardware] or a software [such as anti-virus] that would be closing some ports without even notifying you.

I still remember my friend, could not play World OF Warcraft [Online Game] because his D-Link was blocking some ports. We did a port forwarding and it worked like a charm, later he face it again ... It won't even open the game.

The last thing he did was installing Symantec Security Solution on his PC, he could not believe it. I told him, uninstall it and you will see and it did work. Symantec was doing a great job, blocking the game from even running without even saying eheemm ... I'm blocking this are you sure that you got no trouble so far?

Hmm, but i dont remember seeing anything in the speedtouch set up for assigning a certain port etc like d'link has? or may be i just missed it. As tallg asked is it adviceable to do port forwarding if its just ONE computer?

tiny thing is a router, the modem can't give you an IP address via DHCP as it's a router thing. Some switches can do that, but it should be a little bit advanced to has such abilities and take CISCO switches as an example.

You can use that single network point by connecting it to a 5 ports D-Link switch and use the other free 4 ports to connect another 4 machines to the network.

That quality of that router is not that good, but it has some good features. Imagine that if you have a problem on your PC, you can use that router to issue me a link, user name and password, sending me those and i can solve your problem from my office :)

If you only have one computer attached to your network I don't think you need to do port forwarding, do you?

By smoke• 8 Jun 2009 10:29

WHAT! you call that small baby thing a router? its not the one with wi fi, just the one with 1 network port, hmmm guess you could call it a router then but can we do port forwarding in that too? is it really any good? (talking about qtel modem)

Well i dont have a router at home, just using's Qtel modem the new one. For me these methods seem to work pretty darn well, I also forgot to mention what The one said "And one more thing in your torrent client change the settings for the number of connections to a torrent to 250-500."

Thanks King Ed & The Uno :p

for sharing this with us ... Port Forwarding is about opening ports through your firewall or router [which is most common in all houses]. The router got a built-in firewall depending on it's type, disable that first.

Second, you can do a single port forwarding or a range port forwarding depending on your torrent client.

If your torrent client can always use the same port when you start it, go for the single port forwarding.

If your torrent client is using a random port every time it starts, go for the range port forwarding.

Now it depends on your router, the port forwarding is simple. You'll need to give the name of the application used by this and let's say uTorrent, then provide the port you are using or the range. Finally choose the protocol that you want to enable port forwarding to and that would be TCP or UDP.

I hope that helped somehow ...

Port forwarding means that you open ports in your torrent client (anything between 28000 to 65000) you should always change the port that is originally opened in the client (I think it is 6880) that port is usually blocked by many ISPs.

Once you open a port in your client (ex 32155) you must create an exception rule in your firewall and antivirus I.e. Allowing the incoming and out coming TCP and UDP for port 32155.

And one more thing in your torrent client change the settings for the number of connections to a torrent to 250-500.

Finally there is a good torrent client called Bit Tyrant, that will let you leech without almost seeding but tricks other clients in to thinking that you are a good seeder hence give your client priority for downloads (which mean much faster downloads) but you can only use it on open trackers like mininova, pirate bay etc.. And not private tracker because it is banned there.
