Need an advice from the wise on staying here!
Hello,
I am being offered to renew my contract for another year by my company.
I work in the construction field but my company does not seem to be getting any new projects so far (been tendering for 4 months now).
I keep hearing about a big boom around here, but I see things are settling down. I just can't see any opportunities the way they use to be.
I am really thinking about not coming back although I am being offered a good package (over 50k/month).
What do you think? Do you know of any certain boom or big projects practically to be introduced or are they the usual so much heard of but not seen projects?
Hhhhmmmm...great scenario.
Honestly speaking nowadays, we all seems to be in the same boat. Multi-tasking, no job satisfaction, doing jobs outside the scope of our experties, etc, etc.
Dear Friend, lets identify your priorities first; what is your first objective of coming here and staying here and look at the other opportunities without compromising at lower salary or perks.
Everybody knows that the world economy is going towards the downturn and wll take time to come back in real motion. Believe me Qatar is less affected compare to all other gaint developed countries.
All hospitalility industries (hotel, airlines, travel and tourism) are very badly affected, losing jobs and even cut down the salaries of top positions.
I strongly suggest wait for another 6 months and watch the construction industries movement and then decide.
Under present situation, one should feel fortunate enough to have such an attractive job in hand....All the best and Good Luck!
I also work in the construction industry sefri. If you are optimistic, then you will believe that the worst of the global crisis is over and things will start to gradually get better. Some developers in Dubai are already begining to recruit again. So you should hang on to your job which sounds like a good offer and wait a little.
If you are pessimistic you will beleive what some analysts have been calling the begining of a new great depression which will last for quite some time.
Either way, Qatar has loads of projects begging to start and enough resources to go on despite the crisis. My advice: your chances in Qatar are better.
Thank you all for the nice and practical feedback.
To be honest, I have three options:
1- To work in Algeria for the same package and things there are a lot cheaper than here, but safety is an issue, and schools too.
2- I have a couple of offers in Jordan, but these are not certain and they pay half the mentioned package, but life in Jordan is great.
3- Stay here for another one-year contract (this is what they offer).
My confusion comes from what they are promising all the time in terms of new and bigger projects and plenty of work coming our way. But I am working 2 days at the head office in tendering and I see nothing of the such.
I am not worried about them letting me go. Actually, they won't let me go and insist that I stay.
I like to work in my scope of work, but lately, it has been a little of this and a little of that. Not that I mind being given multi-task jobs, but I don't feel I am doing my job right.
It is very strange, because I don't save an effort, yet it seems I am doing virtually nothing, if you know what I mean... that's the general feeling I keep getting!
To briefly describe it, if I was holding my proper position and doing my job right, you would not be seeing any posts from me... :o)
Construction is a tough and busy task...

From your profile, I'd say stay because Qatar needs good people like you!
Mandi
According to your profile, you have five kiddos. If home is Spain, unemployment is at 18% (last I read).
So, if you can hold on for one more year here, it may be a lucrative decision for you and the family.
If you dont take this job.....then what is your alternative?
What is your plan B?
if it isn't better than this offer...take the offer then you have another year for plan B....
A bird in Hand is Better than Two in the Bush...................
The big boom passed ages ago, but a jobs still a job. You have a job paying good money. In the current environment you'd be stupid to give it up.
You have a job - be thankful!
If you quit, will you get another, especially in a time of global recesion.
Qatar has an estimated growth of 9% this year, instead of the 12% estimate.
Real Estate is plunging when it comes to rent, however also many new projects are on the way. Malls/Schools etc etc.
Construction here is fairly secure business.
So, you choose.
maybe, if you have a high position you should try to get a closed contract, meaning that if you'll be terminated or disposed of that they would have to pay you until the end of your contract/service year.
if you are happy in Qatar... grab the opportunity.
If you are unhappy, choose family/mental health/happiness.
That is a good offer if it is QR50K... go for it

Oh, please: only serious comments.
I would really appreciate it from the wise people here in QL.
Thanks.
