Saudi Airport Clamp Down

Please note, the message below is from my previous employer and has not yet been confirmed, but let it serve as due warning:

--------------------------------------------------------
Please be advised that all Airports in Saudi Arabia have a new rule regarding, leaving and arriving Overseas workers carrying electronic devices. This has not been published to the public, but the airport authorities have already implemented the new rule. Hence please advice all our workers who are traveling to K.S.A.

- All Electronic devices will be submitted for check up before immigration section.

Devices includes Cellular phones with camers and memory card, flash disks, external hard drive,

Laptops/notebooks/PC, ipod, itouch, MP3, players with memory cards.

A special USB device will be inserted to the eletronic devices that the personnel are carrying. This special device can scan all videos and pictures, jpg, bmp, avi, etc. contents of your laptop/cellphones, and will be recorded to their main computer.

- All devices with nude pictures in it will be confiscated immediately. There will be no fines, and
refusal but the person will be sent to the jail and deportation and black listed to K.S.A.

- Laptops with pirated sofrware's will also be confiscated.

This rule has been applied already and is being practice in Riyadh, Dammam and Jeddah Airports.

You must include this in your orientation with the employees travelling to KSA and tell them not to carry any pirated sofrware, movies, or nude pictures. Even datas that are hidden can be found by this device, so tell them not to take any at all. We got the above information through one of our client and they informed that the laptop of one of the newly arrived employee was confiscated a few days back because of one semi nude picture that had forgot to erase.
-----------------------------------------------

I'm REALLY looking forward to the absolute chaos when every cell phone and USB stick is checked whilst irate travellers queue for this new procedure ;o)

Laws are made to be followed, targetting foreigners and especially by the citizens it self to set examples. This has not been the case. Now how do you expect to clean someones house when yours is in a mess

And just how does this device discover the pirated materials. And why no comment on the one that got busted for partial nudity. At what percentage is this partiality a crime, more than eyeballs being shown?

By the time you arrived to KSA by 7pm, you're over and out of the airport by 10pm. LOL

This program could easily reside on a USB device that the connect to your laptop. For phones and cameras, I imagine they'll take the memory card and insert it into their computer. Not rocket science really.

hassan - There is readily available software which can perform facial recognition on your photos. Even basic digital cameras are now able to pick out a face and focus on it. It's very easy to identify certain things within a photo - colour, shape, texture etc etc. So software that scans photos for potential nude pictures wouldn't be hard to create.

This cannot be for real. Not even the Saudis would try this. And a USB device? A work of imagination. How do you install a USB device into a mobile phone?

If they are doing it, I think it is just a dummy device to scare people.

And even if it were true, online disk storage would get round the problem anyway!

Does such a device even exist...and how is it going to flag up 'nude' pictures? Or are the airport staff going to sift through every jpg and avi?

I smell something fishy, and I'm not talking about the contents of Baldrick's apple crumble :)

It will be a good idea for the Saudi authorities to buy a metal casing with a tiny hole ( not more than 5 mm dia.) and fit it to all the incoming passengers private parts with a seal. This should be applicable to men, women and children above 8 years of age. This seal should be checked once every week by the authorities to ensure there is no breach. If it's breached, the person should be immediately sent to the gallows or decapitated in public. This will solve most of the issues.
