Road worker killed

DOHA: A man from the southern Indian state Kerala died on the spot on Thursday when a speeding card hit him. Yousaf (34) from Kozhikode in Kerala, was working as a heavy vehicle driver in the general cleaning project of the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning.
At 5pm on Thursday he was loading a small shovel in a recovery vehicle on Salwa road, when a Qatari national driving a Lexus hit him. His back was towards the vehicle so he could not see it.
So strong was the impact that he was thrown some 50 meters away and one of his legs was cut out of the body and he died on the spot.
Another driver Binu (30) who was helping him nearby was injured and rushed to Hamad Hospital. Yusuf was married and has a five-year-old child.

I cannot begin to imagine imagine the speed that must have been involved. What a horrible, preventable tragedy.

oh the poor qatari. he's going to have pay blood money and damages to the lexus. i'm guessing no new watch this year then.

i hope the courts go easy on him and he doesn't have to go through the drama of an appeal.

If people stopped through crap out of their cars onto the roads (cigarettes, litter, empty coke cans...) there would be no need to hire people to do such a dangerous job.

There seems to be a mentality here that the occassional loss of life on the roads is a fair price to pay to enjoy the convenience of using the road network as a giant dumpster.

Next time you through your litter out of the car window, think about the poor guys who have the dangerous job of cleaning it up.

It really shows how irresponsible driver he is. I hope and prayed that he cant sleep for the rest of his life.. that everytime he sleeps, he will see that nightmare he made. i hope that he lives long so he'll suffers for not sleeping and wished that he'll get sick, a painful sickness the will rot his legs slowly and painfully. that every tears will fall on the dead mans family makes his leg bleed in a painful way, that no medicine can cure the sickeness he had and wishes that he never learned how to drive and to die soon... but not..

But the fact it was a road worker, not some jaywalker or something, is even worse. If it's obvious there is road work ahead it is only common sense that everyone should SLOW DOWN. Sadly someone has to be made a brutal example of for attitudes to change, with some long, heavy jailtime at least...

Whilst I feel truly sorry for the poor guy and I agree that driving here does sometimes leave a lot to be desired. Just remember that deaths of this type occur all over the world.

you read about it here and probably read about it in the Peninsula which is why they write about this stuff.

I don't think we need to do anything in the name of God, he's a big boy and can take of himself.

Just how extreme can we put a comment on this without being deported. At best, theres a blood money available to conclude justice. And you know how much life is worth here in GCC.

May he rest in peace and may his family find solace somehow.

I hope that the driver is prosecuted and pays a hefty sum to the family at the least.

I've noticed these Municipality workers cleaning the fast lane and the dividers... the have a pickup in the front with lights and they are doing the job at the back... I figured out immediately that it was very dangerous

They need proper protection... just having a pickup in front with lights is not good enough...

they should have vehicles in the front AND the back...

The problem is that sometimes, if two vehicles are driving very close to each other, the one that's immediately in the back cannot see what's up ahead...

So when the car in the front makes a last minute switch of lanes, the one in the back does not have time to react...

Anyway, yesterday I had a nissan patrol trailing me with less than 1mtr gap at around 100km/h... if i hit the brakes for any reason... we were both gone... crazy drivers...

From an earlier in the day thread - but its more appropriate here. What you are going to read is hypothetical and the circumstances of the incident may not be what they seem, however, I will include this for the sake of being provocative;-

Lets now move forward 9 months and read from the Gulf Times - "The lower court today awarded a Qatari National a 2 year jail sentence and a QR200,000 fine for careless and reckless driving which resulted in the death of an Indian national who was engaged in road works on C ring road in August 2009. The National is believed to be in the process of appealing the decision"

Now a further 3 months forward from that......and again from the Gulf Times....

"The Court of Appeal today overturned a previous sentence passed on a Qatari National in regard to a Road Traffic incodent in August last year. The national had previously been awarded a 2 year jail sentance and a QR200,000 fine. The Court of Appeal suspended the 2 year sentence and reduced the fine to QR10,000. The Nationals insurance company was ordered to pay the blood money. In explaining its decision to reduce the sentence, the Court of Appeal said that in reaching its decison, it hasd taken into consideration the defendants age and circumstance"

This is hypothetical, but it is based on a number of recent accounts of a similar nature. Now you tell me whats wrong here in terms of deterrent - rhetorical question.
