Proposal to ban smelly people from buses

britexpat
By britexpat

Something smells fishy here !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

US civil rights group believes the 14th amendment of the constitution may protect the smelly.

Honolulu city council has gone back to the drawing board after a proposal to ban smelly people from its buses proved unworkable.

The Hawaiian council had considered making it illegal to have “odors that unreasonably disturb others or interfere with their use of the transit system”.

But lawyers from the city and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said it was vaguely worded, would result in subjective judgments being made and may even have been unconstitutional.

Professor Robert McKeever, head of department at London Metropolitan University’s department of law, governance and international relations, said that it was the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment that the lawyers were considering.

“It was passed in the 1860s and its purpose was to give freed slaves equal treatment under the law. Since then it’s been extended to cover gender and gay equality.

“The idea is that the law may not favour one group over another, so presumably the lawyers are thinking that you can’t give preference to nice-smelling people over foul-smelling people. It sounds ludicrous but in the US anything is possible.

“It’s the most litigious society imaginable and there’s bound to be someone in Honolulu who smells and would like to vindicate their right to travel on public transport.”

the best solution with regard to this problem is the segregation of passengers...exclusive public transport for smelly passengers ...

Lot of people blaming labors and third world people for bad smell, what you will do if your boss is stingy, when he opens his mouth the whole room fills with rotten egg smell. That too he is from states, may be self smell nobody cares. Judging others first with their nationality and TWC etc..... So, nohing to do with education or place you belongs to, it's rather your self decision to be presentable and clean.

Qattie, this isn't about whether some people have a better sense of smell than others, that is a rather immature and unintelligent way to argue. This discussion is about the fact that Qatar has an unusual demographic based on social strata and wealth, thus causing interesting debate.

Sun, the ENT visit is highly reccomended for those who aren't offended by the smell. Unless you haven't noticed it's a combination of body odour coupled with clothing that hasn't been washed for weeks. If you're defending that then your avatar suits you perfectly :)

By anonymous• 11 Sep 2009 20:43

Ms Cattie, if you will be more observant, you will note that we are not talking about whether people should bath or not, we are talking about whether they should be banned from public transport. And the answer is 'no' because that crowd is mainly comprising of hardworking labourers who do not have any other means of transport.Rather than them seeing an ENT surgeon, why don't you see a neurologist for such early Alzeimer's?

Are you nuts?......no doubt I am crazy about you!

Jasmine & Anne

With all due respect, I cannot understand why you both took offence to people who are sensetive to people who refuse to wash, haven't you noticed that some of us offered washing supplies yet these people refuse to use them. Rather than assume its prejiduce why not assume it's incentive to get them to wash?

No offence but maybe your sence of smell isn't up to par?

As i've noticed the same nonchalant attitude of 'non washers' because they, much like yourselves are oblivious to the extremely offensive stench.

A ENT doctor visit maybe in order or if you are part of the 'non washing' populus, do spare the rest of us.

better still (cost effective)would be to spray phenol, dettol on people walking down the streets/entering malls, once its confirmed theyr smelly..any volunteers..?..

Someone mentioned that the redolent labourers alibi is that they cannot afford hygiene supplies. Unfortunately this is not always the case, because personal hygiene is a habit instilled during childhood, by parents & society, these smells to the parties who offend others noses are accustomed to the stench, therefore aren’t offended by it, probably even welcome it.

In my personal experience with the staff I employ, there are off course the very clean ones, not surprisingly, they are the cleverer ones, who take pride in how they dress and smell, very efficient and professional, they earned my highest respect..

Then their colleagues the smelly ones who see me physically wane at their odour couldn’t care less.

I have given them supplies and instructed that they cannot come to work unless they bathe accordingly, to no avail as they make an effort for one week then fall back into their old habits.

As futile as it may seem, I have learnt to be brasher and demand that they bathe, to this they adopt a more creative comeback that they don't smell and in fact have bathed…notice the smelly ones are the most boisterous. It surprises me that they are oblivious to my obvious distress

Once the smell was so intolerable I couldn’t help several gag reflexes as the result. You would assume they were shamed? Not surprisingly they weren’t according to their rationale its all in my head.

I don't find banning and discriminating against smelly people a bad thing, so long as they have the supplies then theres no excuse.

If a laborer is coming from a day working in the hot sun and smells after work, that is one thing. But non-laborers who just refuse to wash with soap or launder their clothes regularly is inexcusable. It's one thing to be unaware that you smell. It's another to not care, when people keep a distance from you, cover their nose, bring you soap and deodorant or even tell you you need to wash. Then it's just being rude and classless.

I understand that the situation here is different. But in the US or on an airplane where people pay a lot to to fly in reasonable comfort considering the close quarters, I do support having malodorous people wash before boarding. Southwestern keeps hygiene products and has someone escort the offender to the washroom where they can clean up. They have even provided changes of clothes where the clothes were so smelly.

I am a western woman who used Karwa buses most working days for 2 years, not for a short trip, Dukhan-Doha return daily. (round trip 3 hours). Almost ALL of the other passengers were men who were working on the roads. They treated me with nothing but respect, courtesy and yes, sometimes they may have been hot from working 8 hours in the hot sun. They are worth 10 of the people who think they should be banned from buses, decent hardworking men away from their families to give them a better life. Most people who turn up their noses at these people wouldn't dream of taking the bus anyway so no issue as far as I am concerned. If you still feel this way after using Karwa on a regular basis then fine, that's your opinion. If you don't ever use the bus then I don't see why you feel so strongly.

They do not live in huge labor camps with limited access to bathroom and laundry facilities. They can afford soap. I think in most developed countries this is the case. The situation is different in Doha because of the fact that so many laborers are brought in from under-developed countries to develop Qatar. They are often kept in appalling living conditions working for an inhumane wage that might not make soap and laundry detergent look like priorities. But ANYBODY who has access to water can at least rinse their body well (and preferably add some soap so they don't smell. I have ZERO patience for reasonably educated people who don't consider how their odor is assaulting the senses of others.

I assume you don't smell Sun, so others can follow your lead :-)

You start announcing that you must be reasonably odor-free to get on the bus, plane, etc. Then when someone comes to buy their ticket or get onboard, if they are malodorous you simply tell them they must clean up and deodorize before boarding. That's how Southwest Airlines handles it.

have enacted a policy towards people unfit to fly based upon hygiene. You simply cannot charge someone a fare to travel and then subject them to someone who stinks up the whole bus or plane. I have had to be moved SEVERAL times on airplanes because of the malodorous seat partner I was assigned to. Had they not been able to change my seat, I would have gotten off the plane and cancelled my ticket.

In this day and age there is no excuse for people flying not to be able to afford soap and water.
