Among the british accents, I prefer edinburgh accent, even though i dont speak that accent.

Edinburgh accent is voted the 'sexiest accent" in Britain.

Well I dont prefer any accent but I find some very cute. When Egyptian says blease zes iz very imbortant, also most of the Egyptians are mixing 13/30,14/40,15/50 (I dont know why) or Filipinos says chogockalate I am forcing myself not to smile. Also I am very confused about the shaking head of indian people. I cant understand if they are confirming or saying NO.:)

(I am not trying to offend anyone, I always admit that my English is poor :))

The pubs are lovely there too, it's not always about drinking, it's about the atmosphere. Ireland have banned smoking in public places too, so you can sit in a nice country pub next to an open fire drinking a nice hot drink knowing it's freezing outside.

unfortunately i haven't been able to get my hands on the book yet.will buy it to read on my next trip home.the movie itself was so touching....i can imagine what the book's going to be....coz i have always maintained that no movie does justice to the original novel from which it was inspired.

i have heard a lot about Irish hospitality and about their famous home-made Crumbles,Buttermilk scones and Currant squares....i feel they are very earthy people....whatsay?i feel comfortable around such simple folk rather than the heady and haughty ones in the cities.

a man should be what he is and not try to copy others way of life. learning english and having a good knowledge of its vocabulary is 1000 times much better than having an accent as i believe that people with little knowledge in english who have developed american and british accent from movies and television are the most foolish ones.

By anonymous• 9 Nov 2009 09:23
anonymous

I noticed that some people watch lots of TV and then go to streets trying to imitate what they heared on TV, although thier vocabulary is not yet enough to speak with and understand others.

I won't point to someone in particular, but I will give an example of some black guys who usually come from X, or Z, or Y country in Africa, but you see them on streets or clubs trying to imitate American Niger movies. Not only with thier accent, but also with thier dress. And when one court a lady in a club, he tells here, I am from LA (or any US state) with his hands shaking as in movies. All he knows is couple of phrases and some body language that he watched on TV. Just check his writting skills and grammer, or talk to him for 10 minutes about something serious, and then you will find that he keeps repeating the same words and phrases all the time with his body shaking language, but no ability to talk, discuss and go deep to the topic that you pull him to.

What I mean from this story is that not only the accent that matters all the time, but also the vocabulary, the grammer, and the mind to catch the meaning even if you dont understand a word in a phrase that an American say while talking to you.

when I have this same conversation, I try to explain that exactly, but always end up saying 'we South Africans have a very plain accent without the trills or ups and downs of the voice, basically anything frilly' I can spot a Saffie anywhere and can tell the difference of most western accents - Aus and New Zealand too:-)

Indian South Africans do have a sort of Indian tone to theirs, even though they are South African. I have gotten mixed up with some Indians from India and thought they were from SA, because the accent was so similar, lol.

Furthermore, have you considered how the french speak english ... it is one of the most sexy accent I have ever heard, especially from the mouth of a french woman!!! Jackfrost, not all Filipinos speak like that. You're probably pertaining to the Filipinos you've only interacted with. Generalizing and stereotyping as you may very well know is an act of a dumb person. I would add more adjectives to perfectly describe people exactly your kind but I reckon it would be a waste because you wouldn't probably understand at least half of it. :)

We Filipinos don't try to have the American accent. I for one, went to an American School in the Philippines, hence the accent. We were actually colonized by the Americans just so you know. We don't even have to try to adhere to an accent because in school, television wherever it is, English is widely used in our country.

So, now before you go on judging and being the smart a** that you are, go on to your history books and get back to me. Btw, your grammar and writing isn't so good either. You might as well practice that first before you go on posting. :)

Just my two cents.

An accent is the result of your own dialect and should be as unique as your finger print.

By all means get your P's and B's in order, but I don't like the idea of actually intentionally acquiring a certain countries accents for 'showmanship' purposes. Why not attain a more extensive vocabulary which is crucial for expressing yourself.

Under the same reasoning, why not use that energy which is a vital commodity attempting to read as many books laden with knowledge written in the language you've concerned yourself with perfecting. Why not learn a new language if the linguistics is your cup of tea so long as you have something to say, in a progressive world it will always count more than how you say it.

Its not the accent or the writting style that is important but how effectively we convey to others what we intend to say.. Many times I have seen "misunderstanding" and "miscommunication" stated at work place itself even when both parties speaks Asritocratic ENGLISH. So whether Indian use nodding head or italian use hands but did get the message through is the objective for communication rather than the gesture and posture while communicating
