Nobel Prize for Obama Justified??

US President Barack Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009. Is he a worthy winner? The Nobel Committee hailed Obama’s extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples. Citing his work to rid the world of nuclear weapons and peace efforts made to bring peace and stability in the Mideast, Mr Obama was chosen ahead of the likes of Morgan Tsvangirai, Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, who had been a favorite for the award. Is Obama the right choice for the Nobel Peace Prize?

I dont think it was a right choice....

For capturing the world’s attention and giving hope, US President Barrack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. (source:Yahoo)

I kinda have to agree since never has a President given so much hope not just to his country, but also to everyone around the world.

FS... This is my personal view point.

Obama after the announcement reacted - “I am both surprised and deeply humbled by the decision of the Nobel committee”. Exactly - Personally I am surprised and puzzled and slam the decision!

I would say that this is the most dubious & idiotic decision taken by the commitee for the Nobel Peace Prize. In the office for mere eight months and just 12 days prior to the deadline Nobel Prize nomination in last February;I was wondering what were those outstanding "accomplishments" that Obama put in front of the world to bring peace? He did not end the war in Iraq or Afghanistan or bring peace in the Middle East or settle the Iran Issues. Any leader can make suggestions / promises, express his view point and set goals for the years ahead. It will be an ignominy to those great personalities like Monther Theresa (Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu)and Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela who really struggled and dedicated their lives to achieve the set goals.

A formal request for increasing the troop in Afghanistan was recently sent to Obama otherwise US will loose the war. As a Nobel Prize winner for Peace, I am wondering what will be his actions in this regard. I really feel sorry for those young brave soldiers in the battle field losing lives every other day.

To put it briefly, I think it is the consolation prize for him for losing Olympics. The Committee members really felt sorry for him.

Ohhhh noooo! Am I to loose faith in the credibility of the Nobel Committe!?

When will politics and money stop tampering or buying everything :(

Even if the Chairman couldn't find someone to earn the Peace prize this year , which is understandable in hindsight, had they said "we are sorry but in light of this years events, we are unable to nominate an individual for the peace prize this year" it would have given them such esteem and regard and also sent a much needed message to the world.

Enough with the propaganda already!!

The committee praised his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples". They also were taken in by his speeches regarding peace in the Middle East and a nuclear free world..

The Chairman of the committee asked "Can someone tell me who did more than him this year? It is difficult to name a winner of the peace prize who is more in line with Alfred Nobel's will."

Seriously people? In the end a Noble Peace prize isnt going to get anyone into heaven right? Why worry yourselves with reasons and justifications behind who got a prize for what? Let it be their burden to bear. End of story :)

Obama has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009. I am stunned, because the Peace Prize has been awarded to a man who has been in office for less than a year. And done nothing of note.

According to the Nobel committee, it was “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples”.

According to me "He might be a awarded for his action in future as per his promises in past"

By awarding such a respected prize to someone who has done so little, seems to dilute its value. I’d love to see Obama earn this award. I would love to see the US take a leading position in the world on moral issues.

I love it. But I don’t love awards being handed out as if it were a popularity contest.

So far Obama has shown to be a great speaker. He has promised a lot, but let us hope he delivers.

A major action has been the stopping of the misile defence shield in Easter Europe, thus lessening the tension with Russia.

However, he has promised much on health care reforms and Middle East peace progress..

Thus far he hasn't had much success in these areas - But then, he's only been in office 9 months..

GOd knows how far this is relevant

"

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.

For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

The Nobel Committee have put a real nail in their own coffin with this one, and Obama should have the intelligence to decline the award - now that would truly be remarkable and serve him very well. After this, there will be little prestige associated with getting such an award in the future.

The nomination for this prize was made 10 days after he took office, so it is based on his 10 days of presidency. This decision was made by a leftish Norwegian panel who want to say that 'thank God Bush has left office' and they wish to assert that Obama is their best hope in being weak and indecisive in steering Western interests.

Even until the present day, nothing has really changed in American policy, and there may be another 40,000 troops going into Afghanistan very soon.

What this really comes from is his appeasement of radical Islam and her many extremists. Bowing apologetically at the feet of the apparently oppressed and dispossessed really fires up the hearts and minds of liberals everywhere and I suspect it is from this basis that the misconstrued 'hallucination' of peace has come.

(What a mistake to make. Once Iran has its nuclear armoury in place, which could be in the next few years, I'm sure both sides will sit down over cups of coffee and 'engage' each other with 'meaningful' dialogues about regional and world peace. )

He really should decline it. That's even better than being awarded the prize and accepting it.

Obama didn't get the Olympics so they decided to pacify him with a Nobel Peace prize before he decides to bomb the Olympic HQ :-/.

But when you compare the work done by the previous Nobel Laureates to what Obama has done, then yea, Obama hasn't done much at all. At least not enough to fully merit a Nobel Peace Prize.

Now that he has it, there might be pressure on him to initiate peace talks/gestures. That could be a reason for him getting it.

The money he won 10,000 Kronor (Swedish currency) can now be used to alleviate the American economy. More stimulus ? I enjoyed my stimulus rebate while it lasted :-)

Unlike the other Nobel Prizes, which recognize completed scientific or literary accomplishment, the Nobel Peace Prize may be awarded to persons or organizations that are in the process of resolving a conflict or creating peace. As some such processes have failed to create lasting peace, some Peace Prizes appear questionable in hindsight. For example, the awards given to Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Shimon Peres, Yitzhak Rabin, Yasser Arafat, Lê Ðức Thọ, and Henry Kissinger were particularly controversial and criticized; the Kissinger-Thọ award prompted two dissenting Committee members to resign.
