These days Resident permit for family takes only 6 days exactly. So go through this site about procedures, prepare all required documents without missing anything and submit it through your company PRO.
You should get RP Stamped for your fmily within 6 days.
As per my knowlege, Family Visit Visa (The visa type should be family visit and not normal visit visa) can be extended upto a year. At the time of applying, either you can opt for one year visa otherwise it can be extended month on month basis. Check the Ministry of Interior website. Check with Immigration Department in Madina Khalifa.

Maximum extension is 3 weeks...nothing more. If you want to stay longer, pay the QR200/day penalty until your wife's RP is released.
