Dress codes for women

The Waab Wanderer
By The Waab Wanderer

Tonight my wife and I went to the Harp Bar in the Sheraton for a drink, upon arrival we were refused entry because my wife's dress was about 1/2 inch above the knee!

We were told that it was against the rules for women to be in bars with a dress above the knee and it was likely that the CID would visit at weekends and it would mean a 3,000 QAR fine for my wife!

This is a first for us, has a law been introduced or did the bar manager just not like the look of us?

Ask your wife to dress about 1/2 inch under the knee, then go have fun. Welcome to QL.

Wondering when the new dress code was implemented and were the public made aware of the dress code by publishing it officially? I think we need to go to these bars everyday to check the "latest dress code" (bear in mind to keep a few pairs of cloths, viz. full & half sleeves, sleeveless, full & half pants.. you never know which one will become handy...lol)

A thought comes to mind..

How come Azilana knows about this rule and many others don't ?

It probably means that it was announced, but either we didn't bother to listen or the authorities did not advertise properly.

bars are hallal and dressing above the knee is haram !!

should their focus be on the length of a woman's dress or safe school crossings for children?

It really boggles my mind how screwed up their priorities are here.

lol MD

what I read on QL , and what I see outside are different.

I still believe those ones who cant stand is creating and spreading stories...Nothing is real. people are wearing whatver they like out here.

There's no harm in having their own rules,it's their country, what they should be doing is clarifying the rules & putting in it black & white in the pathetic excuses for newspapers this town has,it's not like they have breaking international news & don't have space to put in an announcement from the concerned ministry,it's all cut & pasted from international news agencies anyways,so make a quarter page announcement stating the dress code, that way this couple wouldn't have had their weekend plans ruined 'cos the guy's wife would either have dressed appropriately before going there or they'd have just stayed home & called a few friends over for drinks...what the authorities here fail to see is the bitter taste & lasting impression one-off incidents like this leave in the minds of the expat residents here...then again,if they had that much foresight,a lot of us wouldn't be here now would we?...

Some of these guys could not stand the sight of those lovely solid legs. Imagination comes easy, with the possibility of loving your hands as a result, and that explain why.

last week, after apllying for an id just to get inside qube, they refused entry because my red dress is above the knee, they should have informed me right there while i was getting an id, so i would not bother to get one.

....something else to add mmyke... we arent in Canada, why should we expect that because it is normal and acceptable in Canada that if Qatar does not follow the same standards they are uncivilized and sick?

mmyke, you can check those facts. As I recall they did a blanket law about 10-11 years ago and then when the hookers on Yonge decided to prance up and down the street half naked they restricted it to certain places as the ladies causes a multi car pile up during morning rush hour traffic.

I am sure everyone would be oh so very accomodating to a lady going to pick her kids up from school in a mini skirt and heels only.

if a woman wants to go bare-breasted in Canada she can,,,,nothing to stop her and re-affirmed by our Supreme Court a few years ago....

By Amoud• 23 Oct 2009 11:31

I actually think this is funny.

Many cultures think it is acceptable to go bare breast. If these same cultures did it in the West they would get the same treatment. Each country does not have to adhere to western standards to be civilized. Not quite sure how it is sick to ask a woman to wear a skirt a few inches longer.

- skirts should not be above the knee

- no open shoulder/cleavages showing

I'm sure your wife have nice clothes that could show sexiness without showing extra skin...no offense meant.

i believe the manager feared the fine. It is not you that they don't like.

Believe me, the money that they will earn from you with little drinks (you mentioned it) is not enough to pay the fine.

So, don't take it personal.

this law was introduced some time ago.. no skirts above the knees and no open shoulders...

like you guys live not in Doha? everyone was talking about it for at least a month..

MD, why not to go to the bars? sure yu still can go, just put on pants, or medium skirt instead of shorts, and cover your shoulders.. nothing wrong with that.. you still can drink a lot, even wearing the long skirt...

This is disgusting, some of the security round here have turned into the religious police, what gives them the right??

The lack of understanding of other cultures here is disturbing especially as they depend on a foreign workfoce. The girl was not naked for god's sake!
