1st pregnancy, need info about hospitals

I've been reading a lot of posts regarding Gyne's here on QL and have found useful info about consultations, etc. I want to know more about what the best choice for actually delivering the baby. Its my first baby so I'm not sure what to expect. I've heard that if you deliver at HMC you wont get as good as care as you would at a private hospital. Some things I'm concerned about are being able to have my husband with me, and if not I want at least my mom or someone. Is it true at HMC you don't get your own room there like in the US? I find it hard to imagine not having my privacy, especially if its my first and scared and then have to listen to other deliveries in progress, it might terrify me!! Most importantly I want a good Dr and the safest care with anesthesia, possible complications, and not someone that's going to make decisions for me without it being my choice (I mean choices that really should be mine). I'm seeing a private Dr for my consultations, how close to the delivery should I register at a hospital? I don't have any coverage so what are some of the cost differences for public/private? Can anyone please give me some insight and recommendations? Thanks!

Hamad truly is the best when it comes to emergency care for major complications during labor. However, if you never end up needing that kind of specialised care, you may wish you had gone somewhere you couldn't hear labouring women in the room next door. That being said, each birth experience at Hamad depends on which nurse pair you end up with, which doctor happens to be on duty, how many other women are in labor at the same time as you and how assertive you are with the medical staff. If you can afford it, by all means, go to Al-Ahli or Emadi or Doha clinic. You'll have to weigh in the risk of emergency transfer to Hamad in case of any complications (which really is very rare). Bear in mind though that if your baby is transferred to Hamad after birth for major complications, you may not get a room at Hamad at all which is a killer if you're planning on breatfeeding. If you decide to go to Hamad for the birth, your husband will not be allowed in. Your mother or other female companion will be allowed in but the medical staff can kick them out if they want too. As soon as you arrive, have your companion develop a rapport with your nurse pair and be really friendly; they truly appreciate it and will be more likely to let that person (and more campanions if they REALLY like you) stay with you throughout your labor. During examinations, they will ask your mom to step outside for a moment, just remind them to let her in when they're done. Also, at the delivery stage, no one other than the medical staff is allowed in the room. If your mom is friendly enough and you hold on tightly enough to her blouse, they can't physically remove her from the room.

I had several people with me at once (occasionally stepping out and taking turns). My friend had both of her sisters with her until delivery.

At Hamad, it's worth going with someone who has attended other births there who can tell you what to expect and who can support you if you need to be assertive with the staff. I would suggest hiring a doula. There are a few in Qatar now. Google 'doula' to find out more about what these women do. Also, I would suggest taking a childbirth preparation class which is also available through some doulas in Qatar.

You can get a private room for a charge but it isn't guaranteed.

Happy pregnancy and birth :)

A friend of mine here, her daughter had a baby at Hamad and they would not allow her mother in the room, unless things have changed in the last year.

then really your only choice is Hamad. No, your husband will not be allowed in Delivery, but your mother or any female friend would be. It is a very excellent hospital as far as medical standards. Different than what you would be used to in the states (bedside manner etc) but that applies to ALL hospitals in Qatar as well.

hi, my wife gave birth to a healthy baby in HMC.i think it has some of the best facilities and qualified doc's, the best option would be to see a good private doc along with the regular health centre visits, in the third trimester they will transfer your file to womens hospital in HMC,one good thing about HMC is they try to do a normal delivery and wait till the end, and dont rush for a c-section,

Book a private room in advance they charge you 200 QR/day.

al ahli has some packages for delivery, ranges from 15-25k but that just dont end there. they try to extract as much money as possible from you even after the delivery in the name of post natal checkup and child followup.

someone suggested maha from doha clinic, she is not even qualified gyne to do deliveries, she is doing the deliveries under the supervision of a male gyn dr tarek who is a qualified gyn. she is just been hyped up by some egyptians and some arabs,

food for the thought.........

"WHERE DO YOU RUSH IF YOU HAVE SOME EMERGENCY, OR WHERE DO PRIVATE HOSPITALS SUGGEST YOU TO GO IF THEY CANNOT HANDLE THE CASE, HMC, COZ THEY ARE EQUIPPED WITH SOME OF THE BEST FACILITIES TO HANDLE ANY KIND OF EMERGENCY"

I am also pregnant and have only been in the country for just 4 weeks. I have already gone to the Al-Ahli hospital for my first appointment and things went nicely. I will be giving birth there as planned. They also have a pediatrics clinic there as well so everything can be taken care of onsite. I have taken my 18 month old to the clinic and things went very nicely and the doctor was nice as well.

When are you due? If you have any questions about pregnancy in general let me know. I'm no expert but have given birth and do know what to expect.

all i know about private room at the moment cant b requested in alkhor hospital since theres a lack of bed capacity and lots of females goes to labour.

but if they not having so much patient, maybe u can talk to the staff there and request for that. this is the new rule that applies to the hospital due to bed capacity, as u know alkhor hospital is not that big in size and the size of community around hospital is very big. so its understandable if they make such a policy.

but in order to do that, in Alkhor hospital, u have to deposit Qr. 4,800 for 5 days + Qr.200 for the labour process. if u stay only for few days, the remaining money u can refund from the cashier. this cost is ONLY for patient with VALID HEALTH CARD. if its not, u have to pay double for that.

i also heard that in al ahli hospital, u have to pay 15,000 riyal for the whole service. cos my neighbor choose that hospital to deliver her baby. which good enough for her that her husband company pay for that.

Delivering on Visit Visa??!! in that case, your husband should pay every penny for the services & nothing will be subsidised.

HMC is well advanced in maternity / delivery care. they even have better machineries than almost all the private clinics. You can for sure have a private room on prior request.

Al-Ahli & Al-Emadi are another good choices, specially if you are covered with health insurance.

You can have your own room in private clinics, I'm not sure if HMC provides individual rooms. A close friend just delivered a healthy angel, she said she was best treated and post-labor care was good, at Khour hospital. I've seen the good doctors there, the place is very clean and the staff actually know how to smile at you.

Salam
